The peony (牡丹, botan), often regarded as the “king of flowers,” represents happiness, wealth, nobility, and magnificence. Long considered a favorable motif, it symbolizes prosperity and abundant harvests. In Japanese, the second character of the word botan (丹) originally referred to an “elixir of immortality” associated with ancient mountain hermits, which gave the peony additional connotations of longevity and eternal youth.

The peacock (孔雀, kujaku) is believed to have been introduced to Japan during the Asuka period (592/593–710). Because of its high fertility, it also symbolizes the prosperity of descendants, and for these reasons it has long been regarded as an auspicious and protective presence.

A closer look at the base reveals butterflies (蝶, cho)engraved on both legs of the stand. As a creature that transforms from larva to chrysalis and finally into a butterfly, it represents rebirth, transformation, and renewal. For samurai in particular, this motif resonated as a symbol of the cycle of life, death, and rebirth, and butterflies were sometimes believed to embody the souls of the departed.

The stand is not only a functional display piece but also a decorative object that reflects the refined aesthetics and layered symbolism of traditional Japanese art.

*As this product is an antique, there are small scratches and dents on the wood.
