Antique Japanese Sword Katana Signed by Yukihiro with NTHK Kanteisho Certificate<\/strong><\/span>
\n\u3010Description\u3011<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

This blade was forged by the first generation Yukihiro in Hizen Province\u3000(today’s Saga prefecture) in Kanbun era(1661-1673), according to NTHK that authenticated this blade. He was a younger brother of the first generation Masahiro(Kawauchi Daijyo Masahiro), a famous swordsmith in Hizen Province. Masahiro was the grandson of the first-gen Tadayoshi. It is said that Yukihiro first forged a sword when he was 22 years old(1639).<\/p>\n

Serving exclusively for Saga domain, Yukihiro received the title of Dewadaijyo in 1648 and was promoted to Dewano-kami in 1663.<\/p>\n

He visited a swordsmith named Hisatusugu in Nagasaki in 1650 to learn how to use Dutch carbon steel to forge Japanese swords. Netherland was the primary country Japan traded in during the Edo period. Since 1650, he signed his name and engraved “forged from Dutch steel” when he used it.<\/p>\n

He signed ICHI(one in Japanese) before his signature. Because he mastered the Bizen-Ichimonji style ( One of the most famous Japanese sword traditions), and he called himself Hizen Ichimonji. This sword shows the excellent quality of the Hizen sword. The first-gen Yukihiro also served Nabeshima Sakyo, a feudal lord of the Saga domain.<\/p>\n

The smith’s name “Yukihiro” lasted 6th generations and is one of the most famous swordsmiths from Hizen province during the Edo period.<\/p>\n

Nakago<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aIt has a signature that is inscribed \u4e00, \u80a5\u524d\u570b\u51fa\u7fbd\u5b88\u884c\u5ee3(Ichi Hizenkoku Dewanokami Yukihiro). There are two nakago holes, which indicates the blade used to be longer and was shortened in the past. The signature is located in the opposite of normally Katana meaning the sword might have been originally used as Tachi.<\/span>

 <\/p>\n

\u3010Other Details\u3011<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Fuchi-Kashira<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aA pair of matching sword fittings that cover the upper and bottom parts of its sword hilt. Gold inlay was applied on them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The Takaradukushi (\u5b9d\u5c3d\u304f\u3057) pattern is designed for this Fuchi Kashira. It is a combination of various treasures, and each item has good meanings. It is said these motifs would bring good luck. From this picture, you would find Uchide-no-Koduchi (mallet of good luck), Kinchaku (\u5dfe\u7740, money pouch) and Houju (\u5b9d\u73e0, jewel). In Japan, the Takaradukushi pattern has been appreciated as an auspicious design for a long time.<\/span><\/p>\n

Tsuka and Menuki<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aTsuka is the handle of the Japanese sword and Menuki is its decoration.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0It is challenging to judge what the motif of this Menuki is. It seems a kind of plant is designed semi-three-dimensionally.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\" \"\"<\/p>\n

Tsuba and Habaki<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aTsuba is the handguard for the Japanese Sword and Habaki is the equipment to make the blade not touch its scabbard inside. It prevents the blade from getting rusty and chipped.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0Octagon-shaped antique Tsuba. The surface of this Tsuba is decorated with the Amida Yasuri technique. Many fine lines are radially engraved; it represents backlights of Amitabha Tathagata. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The signature of the maker is carved around the Nakago-ana (center hole of Tsuba). According to this signature, this Tsuba was made by Yoshishige (\u5409\u91cd), who lived in Banshu (\u64ad\u5dde, Hyogo prefecture today). You could see two marks on the upper side; one is hexagon-shaped, and another one is square-shaped. Both of them might be family crests.<\/span><\/p>\n

Saya<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aSaya is the scabbard for the Japanese sword.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Kougai<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aKougai is the equipment for Samurai to arrange or fix his hair style.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Lions are designed at the handle part of this Kougai. The ground is decorated with the \u201cNanako-Ji\u201d technique. The groundwork was hit by Nanakoji-Tagane (chisel for metalworking), so small dents cover the background. Each little dot looks like a fish egg. It is believed the lion has the sun\u2019s power and considered that the lion would protect people from evil spirits.<\/span><\/p>\n

Authentication Paper<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aNTHK Kanteisho Certificate for the blade<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

NTHK<\/span><\/a>, also known as Nihon Touken Hozon Kai (the Society for the Preservation of the Japan Art Sword), is one of the oldest Japanese sword appraising organizations in modern-day Japan. They authenticated the blade on April 19th in the second year of Reiwa(2020). They appraised it as the Kanteisho class, the blade worth preserving for Japanese society.
