\u3010Description\u3011<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0This blade was forged by Mishina Tanba no Kami Kanemitsu (\u4e09\u54c1\u4f46\u99ac\u5b88\u517c\u5149), a distinguished swordsmith who worked actively in the mid-Edo period.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Kanemitsu served as an official smith for the Amagasaki domain and is recorded in swordsmith directories as having forged blades in Settsu Province (present-day Osaka) during the Ky\u014dh\u014d era. He studied under the Ky\u014d\u2013Iga no Kami Kanemichi line, one of the highly respected schools in the Mishina tradition, and was granted the honorary title \u201cTanba no Kami,\u201d a mark of skill and prestige.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Working during the Kan\u2019en era (1748\u20131751), a time marked by political reform under the Tokugawa shogunate, Kanemitsu belonged to the flourishing Osaka Shint\u014d tradition. \u00a0His works reflect the refined forging techniques and aesthetic sensibilities characteristic of high-grade Osaka craftsmanship.<\/span><\/p>\n

Osaka Shinto<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The Shinto (\u65b0\u5200) is Japanese sword terminology referring to swords forged from 1596 to 1781. The blades made in the Osaka area during this period are called the Osaka Shinto (\u5927\u962a\u65b0\u5200). There are many famous swordsmiths in this Osaka Shinto era. After Toyotomi Hideyoshi (\u8c4a\u81e3 \u79c0\u5409) built the Osaka castle, Osaka city flourished as a castle town and became the business center. Many swordsmiths moved to Osaka to look for better opportunities. They not only forged swords for those Samurai who lived in Osaka but also for feudal lords nationwide. Ikkanshi Tadatsuna (\u4e00\u7aff\u5b50 \u5fe0\u7db1, Awataguchi Ohmi no Kami Tadatsuna), Inoue Shinkai (\u4e95\u4e0a \u771f\u6539), and Tsuda Sukehiro (\u6d25\u7530\u52a9\u5e83) are the most famous among many swordsmiths.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0One of the most notable characteristics of Osaka Shinto is its beauty in Jigane (\u5730\u9244). Jigane is a visible steel surface pattern created by folding and hammering during the forging process, which made it possible by the location of Osaka. Osaka had close access to the production sites of the Tamahagane (\u7389\u92fc, special carbon steel to make Japanese swords). The swordsmiths residing in Osaka could get high-quality carbon steel from these sites.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0It is appraised as a\u00a0Hozon Token <\/strong>(\u4fdd\u5b58\u5200\u5263) issued by NBTHK (Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai: \u65e5\u672c\u7f8e\u8853\u5200\u5263\u4fdd\u5b58\u5354\u4f1a). This authentication paper was only given to authentic Japanese swords, especially well preserved and high quality with artistic value.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Japanese swordsmiths left the black rust on the tang because it prevents red rust while the tang is in its handle. And the discoloration of the tang was created over time, and it is a great indicator for a Japanese sword specialist to estimate when the sword was forged.<\/span><\/p>\n

Habaki<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aHabaki is the equipment to make the blade not touch its scabbard inside. It prevents the blade from getting rusty and chipped.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Authentication Paper<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aNBTHK Hozon Certificate for the blade (No. 3037660)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0NBTHK<\/a><\/span><\/span>, also known as Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai (the Society for the Preservation of the Japan Art Sword), is one of the oldest Japanese sword appraising organizations in modern-day Japan. They authenticated the blade on August 22nd in the 7th year of Reiwa (2025). They appraised it as Hozon Touken, the blade especially worth preserving for Japanese society. The purchaser will receive this original certificate as well. Registration Number\uff1a<\/span><\/span>Osaka 79292<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The Board of Education in Osaka prefecture issued a registration paper for this sword. It is called Jyu Ho Token Rui Torokusho (\u9283\u7832\u5200\u5263\u985e\u767b\u9332\u8a3c). Bunkacho (The Agency for Cultural Affairs) acknowledges a Japanese sword with this paper as a work of art.
\nThe sword needs to be traditionally hand-forged and made of Tamahagane carbon steel to be registered in the system. With this paper, its owner in Japan can legally own an authentic Japanese sword. Based on this registration number, we will apply for its export permit.
\nThis paper will need to be returned to the board of education when the sword is being shipped abroad, but you can receive a copy of it. An English translation of this registration paper is available on request.<\/span>
