Summary<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0This blade was\u00a0 signed by Fujiwara Kanenaga (\u85e4\u539f\u5305\u6c38) during the Shinto era (early-mid Edo period) according to its NBTHK certificate. There are a few swordsmiths who used <\/span>Kanenaga (\u5305\u6c38) as their maker’s name during the same time period and NBTHK didn’t specify which Kanenaga forged this blade. Nonetheless, you can see amazing craftsmanship from this blade made during the Edo period.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Shinto Era<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

As opposed to KO-TO, SHIN-TO refers to the swords forged from 1596(Keisho-era) until around 1763.\u00a0 It is said that carbon steel (Tamahagane) used during this time was pure because of the development of metal-tempering.\u00a0 Also, the peaceful state of Edo period allowed many swordsmiths to pursue their technical improvement.\u00a0 Thus, it became easier for the swordsmiths to make a custom-made blade just as requested by Samurai than the KOTO era.<\/p>\n

\u00a0It is appraised as a Hozon Token <\/strong>(\u4fdd\u5b58\u5200\u5263) issued by NBTHK (Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai:\u65e5\u672c\u7f8e\u8853\u5200\u5263\u4fdd\u5b58\u5354\u4f1a). This authentication paper was only given to authentic Japanese swords, well preserved and high quality with artistic value.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Japanese swordsmiths left the black rust on the tang because it prevents red rust while the tang is in its handle. And the discoloration of the tang was created over time, and it is a great indicator for a Japanese sword specialist to estimate when the sword was forged.<\/span><\/p>\n

Koshirae<\/strong>\uff1a<\/span>Koshirae is the mounting of the Japanese sword. There are several parts that consist of Koshirae such as Saya (Scabbard), Tsuka (Handle), Tsuba (Handguard).<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Fuchi-Kashira<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aA pair of matching sword fittings that cover the upper and bottom parts of its sword hilt.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Tsuka and Menuki<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aTsuka is the handle of the Japanese sword and Menuki is its decoration.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0According to the appraisal certificate, the motif of this Menuki is a spider and it is made of Shakudo (a copper-gold alloy with a dark patina). As spiders nest and catch prey with their web, people considered the spider pattern had the meaning of \u201cgrabbing happiness\u201d or \u201cattracting things.\u201d The cobweb was treated in Nihonshoki (\u65e5\u672c\u66f8\u7d00, Nihongi, The Chronicles of Japan), Kokin Wakashu (\u53e4\u4eca\u548c\u6b4c\u96c6, an early anthology of Japanese poetry) and also Heike Monogatari (\u5e73\u5bb6\u7269\u8a9e, The Tale of the Heike). When the cobweb goes down in the morning, it was thought, \u201cthe person you are waiting for will come.\u201d The spider pattern has been appreciated thanks to its beautiful nest shape and the meaning of the design. People enjoy using this motif for Kimono (traditional Japanese costume) or ceramics.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Tsuba and Habaki<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aTsuba is the handguard for the Japanese Sword and Habaki is the equipment to make the blade not touch its scabbard inside. It prevents the blade from getting rusty and chipped.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0According to the appraisal certificate, the theme of this Tsuba is the Soryu Zu (\u53cc\u9f8d\u56f3, Double Dragon).\u00a0Initially, dragons were imaginary creatures found in ancient foreign traditions or myths. Furthermore, it is regarded as a symbolic beast of auspicious signs. Its body is likened to nine animals: antlers are deer, the head is a camel, eyes are demons, the neck is a snake, the belly is the Mizuchi (\u86df, a mythical animal in Japan that looks like a snake and has a horn and four legs), scales are fish, claws are falcons, palms are tigers and ears are cows. It was thought that the dragon would reign at the top of all animals because of its odd-looking appearance.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Also, this Tsuba is in the nade-bishi shape (\u64ab\u83f1\u5f62)\u00a0 and features the fuchi-taka-nikubori (\u7e01\u9ad8\u8089\u5f6b) carving technique. The nade-bishi shape is a softened diamond form with gently rounded corners, giving the piece a refined and harmonious appearance.<\/span>
The fuchi-taka-nikubori technique leaves the edges of the design raised, creating a sculptural three-dimensional effect that emphasizes depth and texture.<\/span><\/p>\n

Kougai<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aKougai is the equipment for Samurai to arrange or fix his hair style.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0According to the appraisal certificate, the theme of this Kozuka is Houou(\u9cf3\u51f0) and Kirin (\u9e92\u9e9f). Houou is a member of four fantasy animals, which is called \u201cShirei (\u56db\u970a)\u201d with Kirin (\u9e92\u9e9f, Qilin), Kame (\u4e80, Turtle), and Ryu (\u9f8d, Dragon), and it is a god beast looks like a combination of chicken and peacock. Houou was considered an auspicious sign in ancient China, and it was believed that Houou would show up when the brilliant emperor appeared. People appreciate its graceful shape in Japan.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The theme of this Fuchi-Kashira is the Kirin (\u9e92\u9e9f). The Kirin is a mythical beast that is said to have ridden by Zhang Liang, a legendary figure from ancient China, in the story of Huang Shigong and Zhang Liang<\/em>. As seen in this Fuchi-Kashira, the Kirin is depicted as a mythological animal with horns and a horse-like body, similar to a unicorn.<\/span><\/p>\n

Saya<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aSaya is the scabbard for the Japanese sword.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0According to the appraisal certificate, the surface of this Saya is decorated with the Gin-ishime-ji (\u9280\u77f3\u76ee\u5730).\u00a0 Gin-ishime-ji is a silver base metal finished with a fine \u2018ishime\u2019 (stone-textured) surface, giving it a matte, granular appearance similar to the surface of a stone.<\/span><\/p>\n

Authentication Paper<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aNBTHK Hozon Certificate for the blade (No. 328456) and the Koshirae (No. 425867)<\/strong><\/p>\n

NBTHK<\/a>, also known as Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai (the Society for the Preservation of the Japan Art Sword), is one of the oldest Japanese sword appraising organizations in modern-day Japan. They authenticated the blade on November 28th in the 3rd year of Heisei (1991) and the Koshirae on December 21st in the 3rd year of Heisei (1991) . They appraised them as Hozon Touken and Hozon Tousogu, the blade\/sword mounting worth preserving for Japanese society. The purchaser will receive this original certificate as well. Registration Number : Tokyo 256285<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0The Board of Education in Tokyo issued a registration paper for this sword. It is called Jyu Hou Token Rui Tourokusho (\u9283\u7832\u5200\u5263\u985e\u767b\u9332\u8a3c). Bunkacho (The Agency for Cultural Affairs) acknowledges a Japanese sword with this paper as a work of art.
\nThe sword needs to be traditionally hand-forged and made of Tamahagane carbon steel to be registered in the system. With this paper, its owner in Japan can legally own an authentic Japanese sword. Based on this registration number, we will apply for its export permit.
\nThis paper will need to be returned to the board of education when the sword is being shipped abroad, but you can receive a copy of it. An English translation of this registration paper is available on request.<\/span><\/p>\n
