Description<\/strong><\/span>
\n\u00a0This item is an antique Kayakuire (\u706b\u85ac\u5165\u308c, powder flask). It is a small container to store gunpowder. In Japan, powder flasks were made from developed materials and produced with advanced techniques. Some of them were gorgeously painted with lacquer. We estimate this powder flask was made in the Edo period or later.<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0You see that the Netsuke (\u6839\u4ed8, miniature sculpture) is attached to this case. It is a fastener used when hanging various items such as Inro (\u5370\u7c60, case), purse, or small bag from the Obi (\u5e2f, belt) with a string and carrying them around. As the picture below shows, you could hang this powder flask on your belt and enjoy it as a part of your fashion.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0As for the design, the Tokugawa Aoi crest (\u5fb3\u5ddd\u8475), a butterfly, and a karakusa (arabesque) pattern are depicted on the surface. The Aoi crest is known as the family emblem of the Tokugawa shogunate, led by Tokugawa Ieyasu, a famous military commander of the Warring States period. This plant motif was also used for the crest of the Kamo Shrine in Kyoto Prefecture. As mentioned above, the Tokugawa family adopted the three-leaved Aoi crest due to their historical connection with the Kamo Shrine. Since the leaves of the Aoi plant are said to always face the sun, and the word \u201cAoi\u201d is associated with aogu (\u4ef0\u3050, \u201cto look up\u201d toward the sun), people believed that the Aoi pattern would bring good fortune.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0A larva becomes a chrysalis, and it grows up to a butterfly. As this insect changes its looks, it symbolizes reborn; therefore, Samurai loved the butterfly pattern. Also, as butterflies make a couple on good terms, this motif represents happy marriage.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Karakusa (arabesque) is a pattern in which stems and leaves of vines are twined and make curves. Since ivy has a strong vitality and grows up without interruption, people regarded this design as a symbol of prosperity and longevity. Vine is called Tsuru (\u8513) in Japanese, and it has another pronunciation; \u201cMan.\u201d There is a word \u4e07 (it is also read Man), which means ten thousand. In the Karakusa pattern, leaves and vines are connected like Obi (\u5e2f, belt). The word \u201c\u5e2f\u201d can also be read \u201cTai.\u201d Due to its pronunciation, the term \u201c\u4ee3 (Tai)\u201d is associated. From this word-association game, an idiom \u4e07\u4ee3 is associated, and it means a thousand generations. In other words, we could imagine that people used this design wishing prosperity and longevity for their clans for a long time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
