Antique Japanese Sword Katana Attributed to Den Naminohira Yasuyuki with NTHK Kanteisho Certificate<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u3010Description\u3011<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0This blade is attributed to Den Sasshu Naminohira Yasuyuki (\u4f1d\u85a9\u5dde \u6ce2\u5e73\u5b89\u884c) during the late Muromachi period according to NTHK appraisal. The Naminohira school was established in the late Heian period by Masakuni, a swordsmith of the Yamato tradition who migrated to Satsuma. Blades produced before the late Nanbokucho period are referred to as Ko-Naminohira (Old Naminohira), while those made afterward are known as Sue-Naminohira (Later Naminohira). Swordsmiths of this lineage were known for incorporating the characters \u201cYuki\u201d (\u884c) or \u201cYasu\u201d (\u5b89) into their signatures.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The name Naminohira literally means \u201ccalm waves,\u201d and as such, swords from this school were especially prized by samurai in naval forces as auspicious weapons. According to legend, when Masakuni sailed from Yamato to settle in Satsuma, he offered a sword to the sea in prayer for safe passage and to calm the waves. From that time on, he adopted the name Naminohira Yukiyasu (\u6ce2\u5e73\u884c\u5b89), meaning \u201cthe waves are calm, and the path is peaceful.\u201d\u00a0From the late Heian period to the end of the samurai era, the Naminohira family upheld their craft and legacy for nearly a thousand years. The maker\u2019s name, Yukiyasu, lasted many generations and according to its NBTHK appraisal, this particular blade was signed by a late-gen Yukihira from the late Muromachi period.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Nakago<\/strong>: <\/span>Nakago is the tang of the Japanese sword. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Japanese swordsmiths left the black rust on the tang because it prevents red rust while the tang is in its handle. And the discoloration of the tang was created over time, and it is a great indicator for a Japanese sword specialist to estimate when the sword was forged.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Koshirae<\/strong>\uff1a<\/span>Koshirae is the mounting of the Japanese sword. There are several parts that consist of Koshirae such as Saya (Scabbard), Tsuka (Handle), Tsuba (Handguard).<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Fuchi-Kashira<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aA pair of matching sword fittings that cover the upper and bottom parts of its sword hilt.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0The motif of this Fuchi-Kashira seems to be a conch shell, known as \u201cHoragai\u201d (\u6cd5\u87ba\u8c9d) and Shinobue (\u7be0\u7b1b, flute, Japanese woodwind instrument). The conch shell originates from Hinduism and is closely linked to the teachings of Buddha. Historically, Yamabushi (mountain ascetics) used it to convey sermons. The conch was brought to Japan around 806 AD by monks like Kukai (\u7a7a\u6d77) and Saicho (\u6700\u6f84), who returned from Tang China, with five of the eight bringing conch shells. Its sound represents the teachings of Buddha, making it a sacred instrument in Japanese esoteric Buddhism. The conch is one of the Eight Auspicious Symbols in Tibetan Buddhism, symbolizing purity and the dissemination of Buddhist teachings.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Tsuka and Menuki<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aTsuka is the handle of the Japanese sword and Menuki is its decoration.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The motif of this Menuki is the seashells (\u8c9d\u5c3d\u304f\u3057, Kai-zukushi). This pattern is a combination of different types of seashells. It is often designed with a seaside scene or wave pattern. You would feel the refreshing atmosphere of summer. Bivalves, especially clam, its shells cannot be combined with any other clam\u2019s frame; therefore, its pattern represents happy marriage.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Seashell is called Kai (\u8c9d) in Japanese. Because of its pronunciation, the seashell has another meaning. There is a word Yarigai (\u3084\u308a\u304c\u3044, worthwhile). As a part of this word has the same accent as Kai (\u8c9d is read Gai in some cases), Japanese people found this meaning. Also, since seashells are hard and combine only with their pair, people thought it represented a robust defense. Due to these meanings that inspire warriors who go to the battlefields, Samurais might have loved this motif.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\" \"\"<\/p>\n

Tsuba and Habaki<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aTsuba is the handguard for the Japanese Sword and Habaki is the equipment to make the blade not touch its scabbard inside. It prevents the blade from getting rusty and chipped.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0The theme of this Tsuba is the wave. As waves\u2019 movements continue endlessly, the wave pattern represents eternity, immortality, longevity, birth, etcetera. Also, since tides repeatedly change the shape and terrain of rocks, some people hoped for a strong will by using this motif. People used this pattern wishing for an indomitable spirit to rechallenge time and time without giving up. Thanks to its dynamic design, this motif has been appreciated, especially for men\u2019s Kimono (traditional Japanese costume).<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0There is a geometric design of wave pattern; the Seigaiha Monyou (\u9752\u6d77\u6ce2\u6587\u69d8). According to a theory, this design symbolizes the benefits of the vast sea. This infinite wave pattern is an auspicious pattern. People used it, wishing eternal happiness and peaceful lives for the future.<\/span><\/p>\n

Saya<\/strong><\/span>: Saya is the scabbard for the Japanese sword.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0This scabbard is covered with black lacquer. Due to its high waterproof effect, lacquer has been used since ancient times in Asia. The blade of a Japanese sword is made of iron, and moisture is the greatest enemy of iron. For the purpose of carrying the blade without degrading it, people devised a method of coating the scabbard with lacquer. To prevent not only moisture but also rain and snow from penetrating the inside of the scabbard, it was necessary to apply multiple layers of lacquer. The Nushi (\u5857\u5e2b, lacquerers) was born precisely because advanced techniques were required to handle the complicated processes.<\/span><\/p>\n

Authentication Paper<\/strong>: <\/span>NTHK Kanteisho Certificate for the blade (No. 13211)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0NTHK<\/span><\/a>, also known as NPO Nihon Touken Hozon Kai, is the oldest organization for sword authentication of Japanese swords in modern times. It was established in 1889 during the post-Samurai era. They authenticated the blade on May 18th in the 7th year of Reiwa (2025).\u00a0 The purchaser will receive this original certificate as well. \u00a0The Board of Education in Aichi prefecture issued a registration paper for this sword. It is called Jyu Hou Touken Rui Torokusho (\u9283\u7832\u5200\u5263\u985e\u767b\u9332\u8a3c). Bunkacho (The Agency for Cultural Affairs) acknowledges a Japanese sword with this paper as a work of art.
\nThe sword needs to be traditionally hand-forged and made of Tamahagane carbon steel to be registered in the system. With this paper, its owner in Japan can legally own an authentic Japanese sword. Based on this registration number, we will apply for its export permit.
\nThis paper will need to be returned to the board of education when the sword is being shipped abroad, but you can receive a copy of it. An English translation of this registration paper is available on request.<\/span><\/p>\n
