\u00a0This antique wooden sword stand is ideal for displaying a Japanese sword, especially a Tachi, as shown in the example photos. It can be enjoyed not only as a functional sword stand but also as an elegant interior decoration.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The design features the motif \u201cPeonies with Chinese Lions\u201d (Botan ni Karajishi, \u7261\u4e39\u306b\u5510\u7345\u5b50), originating from the well-known Japanese proverb, \u201cPeonies with Chinese Lions, Bamboo with Tigers\u201d (\u7261\u4e39\u306b\u5510\u7345\u5b50\u3001\u7af9\u306b\u864e), which refers to harmonious and visually striking pairings.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0In Japanese culture, the lion (Karajishi, \u5510\u7345\u5b50) is considered the king of beasts\u2014strong and invincible\u2014yet it has one weakness: a tiny parasitic insect known as \u201cShishi-shinch\u016b no mushi\u201d (\u7345\u5b50\u8eab\u4e2d\u306e\u866b). According to legend, the only cure for this parasite is the dew that forms on peony flowers at night, which is why lions are said to remain close to peonies for protection and survival.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0In addition, the sword rest area of the stand features a h\u014dju (\u5b9d\u73e0), or sacred jewel. In Japanese tradition, the h\u014dju symbolizes wealth, power, prosperity, and the flourishing fortune of a family. Together, the lion-and-peony motif and the h\u014dju convey themes of strength, the source of its preservation, prosperity, and protection\u2014making this design a deeply symbolic and highly favored choice in traditional Japanese craftsmanship and sword fittings.<\/span><\/p>\n
