Summary<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0According to the appraisal certificate issued by the NTHK (Nihon Token Hozon Kai \/ \u65e5\u672c\u5200\u5263\u4fdd\u5b58\u4f1a), this sword was forged by Yasuoki (\u9756\u8208) during the late Sh\u014dwa period (late 20th century).<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Yasuoki, whose real name was Naooki Shimazaki (\u5cf6\u5d0e\u76f4\u8208), was born on February 1, 1916, in Fuchu (\u5e9c\u4e2d), Musashi Province (\u6b66\u8535\u56fd) \u2014 modern-day Tokyo. Beginning in 1933, he spent twelve years forging swords at the Nihon Token Tanrenkai, an official swordsmithing organization located within the grounds of Yasukuni Shrine (\u9756\u56fd\u795e\u793e). During this period, he signed his works with the smith name Yasuoki.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Swords produced by smiths at Yasukuni Shrine during this time are collectively known as Yasukuni-to (\u9756\u56fd\u5200). These blades were made with traditional craftsmanship and were often presented to military officers as symbols of honor and spirit. After World War II, Yasuoki resumed swordsmithing in 1966 and continued producing blades into the postwar period.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

About Modern Swordsmith<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0There are around 150-200 swordsmiths in Japan today. To legally produce Japanese swords, one needs to pass the national exam given by the Agency for Cultural Affairs(Bunka-Cho) and receive the license. Before taking the exam, one must finish his or her apprenticeship under a licensed master for more than five years.\u00a0Those who practice Iaido(\u5c45\u5408\u9053) tend to use those modern swords, and there are modern Japanese sword collectors nationwide.\u00a0Modern Japanese sword makers are researching old ways to forge swords and trying to recreate ancient-style swords. They are the ones who keep the tradition of Japanese history alive.<\/span><\/p>\n

Horimono (Engraving)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0This blade features beautiful horimono (\u5f6b\u308a\u7269, carvings or engravings) on both sides. On one side, you will find a design of a dragon and tiger (ry\u016bko-zu, \u9f8d\u864e\u56f3), while the other side displays a bamboo and plum blossom motif (chikubai-zu, \u7af9\u6885\u56f3).<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0In Japanese culture, the dragon and tiger are often depicted together as symbolic opposites\u2014representing balance and harmony. The dragon symbolizes power, wisdom, and the heavens, while the tiger embodies strength, courage, and the earthly realm. Their dynamic coexistence reflects the philosophical concept of yin and yang, where opposing forces complement each other.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The bamboo and plum blossom combination also carries deep cultural meaning. Bamboo is known for its flexibility and resilience, symbolizing perseverance and integrity. Plum blossoms bloom even in the cold of winter, representing hope, renewal, and strength in adversity. Together, they convey the spirit of endurance and renewal, highly valued virtues in Japanese aesthetics and bushid\u014d (\u6b66\u58eb\u9053, the samurai code).<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Japanese swordsmiths left the black rust on the tang because it prevents red rust while the tang is in its handle. And the discoloration of the tang was created over time, and it is a great indicator for a Japanese sword specialist to estimate when the sword was forged.<\/span><\/p>\n

Habaki<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aHabaki is the equipment to make the blade not touch its scabbard inside. It prevents the blade from getting rusty and chipped.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Authentication Paper<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aNTHK Kanteisho Certificate for the blade<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0NTHK<\/span><\/a>, also known as NPO Nihon Touken Hozon Kai, is the oldest organization for sword authentication of Japanese swords in modern times. It was established in 1910 during the post-Samurai era. They authenticated the blade on June 15th in the 7th year of Reiwa (2025). The purchaser will receive this original certificate as well. Registration Number : <\/span>Yamagata 40109<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The Board of Education in Yamagata prefecture issued a registration paper for this sword. It is called Jyu Hou Token Rui Tourokusho (\u9283\u7832\u5200\u5263\u985e\u767b\u9332\u8a3c). Bunkacho (The Agency for Cultural Affairs) acknowledges a Japanese sword with this paper as a work of art.
\nThe sword needs to be traditionally hand-forged and made of Tamahagane carbon steel to be registered in the system. With this paper, its owner in Japan can legally own an authentic Japanese sword. Based on this registration number, we will apply for its export permit.
\nThis paper will need to be returned to the board of education when the sword is being shipped abroad, but you can receive a copy of it. An English translation of this registration paper is available on request.<\/span><\/p>\n
