Antique Japanese Sword Tanto Attributed to Kanemoto<\/span>\u00a0with NTHK Kanteisho\u00a0<\/span>Certificate<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u3010Description\u3011<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0NTHK has attributed this blade to N\u014dsh\u016b Kanemoto (\u6fc3\u5dde\u517c\u5143), dating it to the Tenbun era (1532\u20131555) of the late Muromachi period. Although the blade bears no remaining signature, the attribution is based on its characteristics. “N\u014dsh\u016b” is another name for Mino Province, where this blade was forged.<\/span><\/p>\n

About Kanemoto<\/strong><\/span>
\n\u00a0The swordsmith name \u201cKanemoto\u201d lasted 27th generations from the Muromachi period(early 16th century) to the Heisei period(modern-day).<\/span>
\nIt is said the most skilled Kanemoto of all is the second-gen, also known as Magoroku, who was one of the most famous MINO swordsmiths from the Muromachi period. He forged swords in the Mino province, which is renowned for a particular sword style called MINO-DEN.<\/span><\/p>\n

About MINO DEN<\/strong><\/span>
\n\u00a0MINO-DEN exceedingly prospered during Sengoku Jidai(Warring State period) due to the high demand for weapons. And the location of Mino province beat others. Akechi Mitsuhide controlled Mino province, and Nobunaga Oda ruled Owari province. Tokugawa Ieyasu was the lord of Suruga (Neighboring areas). There was high demand from those powerful feudal lords and their retainers.<\/span>
\n\u00a0Furthermore, so many wars occurred between the Kanto region and the Kyoto area. Mino is located in the middle, making feudal lords feel convenient to order swords from MINO-DEN. The blades forged in MINO provinces also had the reputation of their practical design and sharpness. Many feudal lords demanded swords forged in the Mino province. This highly skilled sword-forging technique has been passed down for generations. The smith\u2019s name \u201cKanemoto\u201d was one of the most famous even after the warring state ended.<\/span><\/p>\n

Kissaki<\/strong>: <\/span>Kissaki is the tip\u00a0of the Japanese sword.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

You can see interesting Kissaki (tip of the blade) called\u00a0Shobu Zukuri (\u83d6\u84b2\u9020\u308a)\u00a0<\/strong>on this Katana blade. There is no Yokote on this blade. Yokote is the borderline between the tip and cutting edge. We are confident you will appreciate the elegant look of this blade.<\/p>\n

Nakago<\/strong><\/span>: Nakago is the tang of the Japanese sword.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0Japanese swordsmiths left the black rust on the tang because it prevents red rust while the tang is in its handle. And the discoloration of the tang was created over time, and it is a great indicator for a Japanese sword specialist to estimate when the sword was forged.<\/span><\/p>\n

Habaki<\/strong>: Habaki is the equipment to make the blade not touch its scabbard inside. It prevents the blade from getting rusty and chipped.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Authentication Paper<\/strong>: <\/span>NTHK Kanteisho Certificate for the blade (No. 13191)\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0NTHK<\/span><\/a>, also known as NPO Nihon Touken Hozon Kai, is the oldest organization for sword authentication of Japanese swords in modern times. It was established in 1910 during the post-Samurai era. They authenticated the blade on May 18th in the 7th year of Reiwa (2025). The purchaser will receive these original certificates as well. We can also translate what is written into English and make a<\/span> PDF file<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/span> for your record if you request.<\/span><\/p>\n

Registration Number<\/span><\/strong>: Akita 8716<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The Board of Education in Akita prefecture issued a registration paper for this sword. It is called Jyu Hou Token Rui Torokusho (\u9283\u7832\u5200\u5263\u985e\u767b\u9332\u8a3c). Bunkacho (The Agency for Cultural Affairs) acknowledges a Japanese sword with this paper as a work of art.
\n\u00a0The sword needs to be traditionally hand-forged and made of Tamahagane carbon steel to be registered in the system. With this paper, its owner in Japan can legally own an authentic Japanese sword. Based on this registration number, we will apply for its export permit.
\n\u00a0This paper will need to be returned to the board of education when the sword is being shipped abroad, but you can receive a copy of it. An English translation of this registration paper is available on request.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
