Antique Japanese Sword Katana attributed to Den Jumyo with NTHK Kanteisho Certificate<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u3010Description\u3011<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0This blade is attributed to a member of Jyumyo school during Ka-Ei era (1848-1855: Late Edo period) . Jyumyo is also known as Toshinaga. The JYUMYO school has its origins from YAMATO(NARA Pref.) and moved to MINO province in KAMAKURA period. The tradition continued for centuries right up until the end of EDO period. Their name \u201cJYUMYO\u201d means life span or longevity. As it\u2019s meaning is so hopeful, their swords were prized as celebrated gift to DAIMYO great families among the SAMURAI society.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The MINO swordsmiths style, also known as MINO-DEN, basically has the TOGARI(Pointed shapes protruding from the Hamon )in a classic straight line and random temper line with some white Utsuri. MINO-DEN had its origin from YAMATO-DEN in the late KAMAKURA period(1280-1330). It flourished in the MUROMACHI period(1333-1573) and continued until the EDO period(1603-1868).<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"\u00a0\"\"<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0MINO-DEN especially prospered during Sengoku Jidai(Warring State period) due to the high demand for weapons. And the location of Mino province beat others. Akechi Mitsuhide controlled Mino province, and Nobunaga Oda ruled Owari province, and Tokugawa Ieyasu was the lord of Suruga (Neighboring areas). There was high demand from those powerful feudal lords and their retainers. Furthermore, so many wars occurred between the Kanto region and the Kyoto area.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Mino is located in the middle, making feudal lords feel convenient to order swords from MINO-DEN. The blades forged in MINO provinces also had the reputation of its practical design and sharpness. Many feudal lords demanded swords forged in the Mino province. The tradition of excellent sword forging skills had been passed to the Edo period, and\u00a0Jyumyo<\/strong>\u00a0is a good example.<\/span><\/p>\n

Horimono (Engraving)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0This blade features exquisite engravings (Horimono, \u5f6b\u308a\u7269) on both sides of the blade.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0On one side, an intricate carving of Fud\u014d My\u014d-\u014d riding a dragon (\u5036\u5229\u4f3d\u7f85\u4e0d\u52d5, Kurikara Fud\u014d) is depicted. Fud\u014d My\u014d-\u014d is a guardian deity in esoteric Buddhism, known as the \u201cImmovable One.\u201d He is revered for his role in repelling evil and guiding people toward the righteous path, making him especially venerated by samurai warriors.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The dragon depicted in this engraving is known as Kurikara Ry\u016b-\u014d (\u5036\u5229\u4f3d\u7f85\u9f8d\u738b), a dragon deity considered an incarnation of Fud\u014d My\u014d-\u014d himself. Kurikara Ry\u016b-\u014d is believed to be a divine protector, enveloped in blazing flames that burn away all obstacles and evil. While dragons are traditionally seen as powerful mythical creatures, Kurikara Ry\u016b-\u014d embodies the very power of Fud\u014d My\u014d-\u014d, cutting through ignorance and purging worldly desires. The image of Fud\u014d My\u014d-\u014d riding atop the dragon symbolizes his absolute control over chaotic forces, guiding them toward justice and enlightenment.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Above Fud\u014d My\u014d-\u014d, a Bonji (\u68b5\u5b57) inscription is engraved. Bonji are Sanskrit characters used in esoteric Buddhism to represent Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, and the inscription on this blade is believed to invoke the divine protection of Fud\u014d My\u014d-\u014d.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0On the other side of the blade, an engraving of the Kurikara-ken (\u5036\u5229\u4f3d\u7f85\u5263) is featured. The Kurikara-ken is the sacred sword wielded by Fud\u014d My\u014d-\u014d and is often depicted entwined with a dragon, symbolizing the power to cut through ignorance and evil. This esoteric Buddhist emblem was believed to provide protection and spiritual strength, and samurai warriors often incorporated such motifs into their swords as a source of mental and spiritual support. The design of this Kurikara-ken follows the form of the Sanko-tsuka-ken (\u4e09\u9237\u67c4\u5263, Three-pronged Vajra Sword), a sacred tool in esoteric Buddhism used in rituals, prayers, and for warding off evil.<\/span><\/p>\n

Nakago\uff1a<\/span><\/strong><\/span>Nakago is the tang of the Japanese sword. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Japanese swordsmiths left the black rust on the tang because it prevents red rust while the tang is in its handle. And the discoloration of the tang was created over time, and it is a great indicator for a Japanese sword specialist to estimate when the sword was forged.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Habaki<\/span><\/strong>: Habaki is the equipment to make the blade not touch its scabbard inside. It prevents the blade from getting rusty and chipped.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Authentication Paper<\/strong>: <\/span>NTHK Kanteisho Certificate for the blade (No. 13005)\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0NTHK<\/span><\/a>, also known as NPO Nihon Touken Hozon Kai, is the oldest organization for sword authentication of Japanese swords in modern times. It was established in 1910 during the post-Samurai era. They authenticated the blade and the Koshirae on January 19th in the 7th year of Reiwa (2025). The purchaser will receive these original certificates as well. We can also translate what is written into English and make a<\/span> PDF file<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/span> for your record if you request.<\/span><\/p>\n

Registration Number<\/span><\/strong>: Tochigi<\/span><\/strong><\/span> 9853<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The Board of Education in Tochigi prefecture issued a registration paper for this sword. It is called Jyu Hou Touken Rui Torokusho (\u9283\u7832\u5200\u5263\u985e\u767b\u9332\u8a3c). Bunkacho (The Agency for Cultural Affairs) acknowledges a Japanese sword with this paper as a work of art.
\nThe sword needs to be traditionally hand-forged and made of Tamahagane carbon steel to be registered in the system. With this paper, its owner in Japan can legally own an authentic Japanese sword. Based on this registration number, we will apply for its export permit.
\nThis paper will need to be returned to the board of education when the sword is being shipped abroad, but you can receive a copy of it. An English translation of this registration paper is available on request.<\/span><\/p>\n
