They are typically displayed in Japanese alcoves called Tokonoma (床の間) in homes or tea rooms, and they can vary in size, but they are usually vertical and made from materials like silk or paper. They are not just decorative, but also often convey seasonal themes, poetry, or philosophical messages, reflecting the beauty of nature and the changing seasons. When displayed, it can be easily replaced to match different occasions or moods, making them a dynamic part of Japanese interior design.

Also, they are usually mounted with a wooden dowel at the top for hanging and may have a weighted bottom to keep them straight. They hold cultural significance and are appreciated for their aesthetic beauty and the skill involved in their creation.

This hanging scroll vividly shows the state of mind of the samurai before going into battle. Although the samurai themselves are not directly shown, their armor, bows and arrows, and swords are depicted. Around these objects, there are images of Japanese hawks, legendary heroes, and gods.

Among these figures, two stand out in particular: Kintaro and a man holding a plaque from Ise Grand Shrine. Kintaro is the boy on the left side, wearing clothes with the character “金” (gold) and holding an axe in his right hand. He is accompanied by a bear. This likely represents strength and bravery.

On the right side, there is a man holding a plaque that says 大神宮 (daijingu, another name for Ise Grand Shrine) and standing with a tiger. In Japan, the tiger is believed to protect the northeast direction, which is considered unlucky. The plaque refers to Ise Grand Shrine, the most powerful shrine in Japanese mythology, dedicated to Amaterasu　（天照大御神, the sun goddess. Taken together, these symbols likely represent protection and victory.

*As this item is an antique, please check each photo and ensure its condition.

Examples of how to decorate a hanging scroll
This image is an example of how to decorate a hanging scroll.
