The Tango-no Sekku (\u7aef\u5348\u306e\u7bc0\u53e5) is one of the seasonal festivals and generally regarded as the Boy\u2019s Festival. It is said that the Tango-no Sekku comes from the Continent. Since the Muromachi period (1336-1658), there has been a custom in which some kind of items, such as a hanging scroll depicting a Samurai or Samurai armors, were displayed in the hope of boys growing up well and succeeding.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0This artwork depicts a complete set of samurai armor, known as Gusoku, placed on top of a traditional armor storage box called Yoroi Bitsu. The armor is predominantly red in color, which suggests that it may belong to a category called Akazonae. Akazonae refers to elite military units that emerged during Japan\u2019s Warring States period (Sengoku) through the Edo period, characterized by their distinctive red or vermilion armor. The vivid color made them highly conspicuous on the battlefield, and such troops were often commanded by valiant warlords. In later generations, the Akazonae became a symbol of honor and bravery.<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0This armor consists of several parts, with particular attention given to the helmet, or Kabuto, which was originally designed for practical protection against weapons like swords. Over time, however, the Kabuto evolved to express a warrior’s dignity, personality, and even religious beliefs. The Kabuto depicted here is lavishly decorated, a privilege reserved for high-ranking commanders. Notably, its front features a crest combining Kuwagata (stylized antlers) and a dragon motif\u2014symbols of authority and strength.<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0Covering the face is a Menpo, a facial guard. This particular type is called Ressei Menpo, characterized by an angry expression intended to intimidate enemies. Menpo served not only as facial protection but also concealed the wearer\u2019s expressions to maintain psychological composure. The Menpo shown here includes a false beard, allowing even a young warrior to project the appearance of a seasoned and dignified samurai.<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0The cuirass (chest armor) is adorned with imagery that includes Karajishi\u2014mythical lion-dogs from Chinese folklore\u2014and what appears to be Peony flowers (Botan). \n\u00a0This item is a Kakejiku (\u639b\u8ef8, hanging scroll). When displaying a hanging scroll in a Japanese-style room, it is generally\u00a0hung\u00a0on the wall of the Tokonoma (\u5e8a\u306e\u9593). However, no etiquette says you cannot hang a\u00a0hanging\u00a0scroll anywhere other than in Tokonoma or a Japanese-style room. You could enjoy them regardless of where you display them. You could also create an alcove-like space by simply hanging a scroll out of direct sunlight, laying tatami mats under it, and placing Japanese miscellaneous goods and flower arrangements.\u00a0A Tokonoma is a space in a Japanese-style room where the floor is one step higher than the rest of the room. It was initially thought to be a place where gods resided and was created as a space for people of high status to sit. Since the Edo period, Tokonomas have been created in ordinary houses as a place for guests (high-status people) to sit, and it is considered the most sacred and noble place in a Japanese-style room.
