The chrysanthemum is one of the flowers that symbolize autumn, and it has been highly appreciated since ancient times. As its petals radiate outward, the chrysanthemum has been likened to the sun. This is why the chrysanthemum is treated as a symbol of perpetual youth, longevity, and good health. The “Kiku no Gomon” (菊の御紋), or chrysanthemum crest, is a type of chrysanthemum pattern that has been used as the emblem of the Emperor and the royal family in Japan, making it widely known as a symbol of nobility.

From the Kamakura period (1185-1333) to the Warring States period (1467-1615), the chrysanthemum crest was awarded by the Emperor to warlords who made significant contributions. For instance, Ashikaga Takauji (1305-1358), the first shogun of the Muromachi Shogunate, cooperated with Emperor Go-Daigo (後醍醐天皇, 1288-1339) to overthrow the Kamakura Shogunate. Takauji was granted a chrysanthemum crest as a reward for his efforts.

Similarly, Toyotomi Hideyoshi (1537-1598) was also presented with a chrysanthemum crest by Emperor Go-Yōzei. It is said that Hideyoshi was so pleased with this honor that he incorporated the motif into furniture. During that time, the Emperor was regarded as divine, and receiving a family crest from the Emperor was an immense honor for the samurai. This is how the chrysanthemum pattern became deeply connected with samurai culture.

One popular design known as Kikusui Mon (菊水紋) depicts chrysanthemum flowers floating in running water. For centuries, this design has symbolized longevity based on a Chinese legend, which states that drinking water flowing from a colony of chrysanthemums can extend one’s lifespan. Therefore, the Kikusui Mon was seen as a good luck motif. This design began to be used in the Kamakura period (1185-1333), and some families adopted it for their family crests. Kusunoki Masashige (楠木 正成, 1294?-1336), who played a key role in the defeat of the Kamakura Shogunate, was granted the chrysanthemum crest by Emperor Go-Daigo in recognition of his remarkable achievements. However, Masashige chose to use the Kikusui Mon, featuring water flowing from the lower half of the chrysanthemum flower, rather than the full chrysanthemum crest. It is believed that he did this because he thought it would be too presumptuous to use the same crest as the Emperor. This illustrates the deep connection between the chrysanthemum pattern and samurai culture.

Gold inlays(金象嵌, Kin Zōgan) are applied to the upper right and lower left, creating a striking contrast against the simple iron surface. The Japanese sword worked as a weapon and as an object to show who he was. For example, it shows their personalities and beliefs. You could say that it is like decorations for smartphones today. We recommend you zoom in on the pictures of the sword fittings. When you do so, you can see the skill of Japanese metal engraving techniques. They are mainly made of iron and copper with inlays of gold, silver, and bronze. When it comes to handguard (Tsuba), each one has a different outline and weight. These sword fittings that have lived with Japanese swords of the same age might be worth as much as the Japanese swords. They are inconspicuous parts of the Japanese sword.
