\u00a0This blade is attributed to Hokke Kaneyasu (\u6cd5\u83ef\u517c\u5b89) by the NBTHK, one of Japan\u2019s most respected Japanese sword appraising organizations. Kaneyasu (\u517c\u5b89) is one of the most renowned swordsmiths of the Hokke school, a prestigious tradition that flourished during the late Kamakura to Nanbokucho period (late 13th\u201314th century). It is said that Kaneyasu was active during the mid Nanbokucho period (Late 14th century).\u00a0 The Hokke school was based in the Ashida area of Bingo Province, which corresponds to present-day Hiroshima Prefecture.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0It is said that those who lived in Ashida area were followers of the Nichiren sect, and Hokke swordsmiths often forged blades for the politically powerful Buddhist priests. They needed many weapons as there were many political rivalries between influential temples. They required strong weapons like swords to protect themselves. Hokke swordsmiths met their requests and made excellent quality blades.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0It is believed that the school was founded by Kokubunji Sukekuni (\u56fd\u5206\u5bfa\u52a9\u56fd) in the late Kamakura period (Approx. 1329). Sukekuni was originally from Bizen province (today\u2019s Okayama prefecture) and belonged to Bizen Ichimonji school, one of the most prestigious schools during the Kamakura period. Sukekuni was the father of Mihara Masaie (\u4e09\u539f\u6b63\u5bb6). Masaie was the founder of Mihara school, another prestigious school in the region.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0It is appraised as a\u00a0Tokubetsu Hozon Token<\/strong>(\u7279\u5225\u4fdd\u5b58\u5200\u5263) issued by NBTHK(Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai:\u65e5\u672c\u7f8e\u8853\u5200\u5263\u4fdd\u5b58\u5354\u4f1a). This authentication paper was only given to authentic Japanese swords, especially well preserved and high quality with artistic value.<\/span><\/p>\n

Kissaki<\/strong>\uff1a<\/span><\/span>Kissaki is the tip\u00a0of the Japanese sword.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0This katana features an \u014dkissaki (\u5927\u5207\u3063\u5148), or “large point,” which is a distinctive characteristic often seen in long swords (\u5927\u592a\u5200, \u014ddachi) from the Nanbokuch\u014d period (14th century).<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The \u014dkissaki refers to a longer-than-usual blade tip, designed for powerful cutting and extended reach. From the late Kamakura through the Nanbokuch\u014d period, Japan saw the rise of large, imposing weapons such as \u014ddachi, naginata, and nagamaki\u2014often featuring broad blades and long kissaki. These were ideal for mounted combat, where heavily armored samurai engaged in one-on-one battles on horseback.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0As battlefield tactics evolved toward the Sengoku period, sword designs became more compact. The curved, long-bladed tachi gradually gave way to the more practical uchigatana, with shorter blades and smaller kissaki, better suited for infantry combat and close-quarters fighting.<\/span><\/p>\n

Nakago<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aNakago is the tang of the Japanese sword. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Japanese swordsmiths left the black rust on the tang because it prevents red rust while the tang is in its handle. And the discoloration of the tang was created over time, and it is a great indicator for a Japanese sword specialist to estimate when the sword was forged.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Koshirae<\/strong>\uff1a<\/span>Koshirae is the mounting of the Japanese sword. There are several parts that consist of Koshirae such as Saya (Scabbard), Tsuka (Handle), Tsuba (Handguard).<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Fuchi-Kashira<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aA pair of matching sword fittings that cover the upper and bottom parts of its sword hilt.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0The design of this fuchi kashira features an elegant combination of ocean waves and the kiri-mon (\u6850\u7d0b, paulownia crest).<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The paulownia crest, or kiri-mon, is one of the most iconic traditional motifs in Japan. Historically, it was used by the imperial family and later became associated with the government and authority, especially during the Toyotomi and Tokugawa periods. Today, it\u2019s still used in official emblems, such as that of the Japanese Prime Minister.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The pairing of waves, which represent eternity, resilience, and the ever-changing nature of life, with the paulownia, a symbol of dignity and good fortune, creates a refined and meaningful design. It reflects both a sense of strength and graceful elegance, values that were highly appreciated by the samurai class.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTsuka and Menuki<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aTsuka is the handle of the Japanese sword and Menuki is its decoration.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>The motif of this menuki is myoga (\u8317\u8377), also known as Japanese ginger. <\/span>Myoga was introduced to Japan along with shoga (\u751f\u59dc), or common ginger. According to one theory, shoga was once called \u201csenoka,\u201d while myoga was referred to as \u201cmenoka\u201d in ancient times. Over time, these pronunciations gradually changed into the modern forms we use today.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Interestingly, myoga shares the same pronunciation as the word my\u014dga (\u51a5\u52a0), which means divine protection or blessings from the gods. Because of this association, the myoga motif has long been considered a symbol of good fortune and is often seen at shrines and temples across Japan. It is also a popular design used in kamon (family crests), admired for both its meaning and elegant shape.<\/span><\/p>\n

Tsuba and Habaki<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aTsuba is the handguard for the Japanese Sword and Habaki is the equipment to make the blade not touch its scabbard inside. It prevents the blade from getting rusty and chipped.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>The design of this tsuba depicts Japanese apricot blossoms (\u6885, ume). <\/span>These flowers begin to bloom in winter, often while snow still clings to their branches, and are therefore seen as a sign that spring is approaching. Like cherry blossoms, they have been cherished in Japan for centuries. People admire their delicate petals, subtle fragrance, and the elegant shape of the tree\u2019s branches\u2014so much so that many traditional poems have been written about them.\u00a0<\/span>Because they bloom in the cold season, ume blossoms symbolize perseverance, resilience, and vitality.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0NBTHK<\/a><\/span><\/span>, also known as Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai (the Society for the Preservation of the Japan Art Sword), is one of the oldest Japanese sword appraising organizations in modern-day Japan. They authenticated the blade on December 4th in the 6th year of Reiwa (2024). They appraised it as Tokubetsu Hozon Touken, the blade especially worth preserving for Japanese society. The purchaser will receive this original certificate as well. Registration Number : Kyoto 4480<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The Board of Education in Kyoto prefecture issued a registration paper for this sword. It is called Jyu Hou Token Rui Tourokusho (\u9283\u7832\u5200\u5263\u985e\u767b\u9332\u8a3c). Bunkacho (The Agency for Cultural Affairs) acknowledges a Japanese sword with this paper as a work of art.
\nThe sword needs to be traditionally hand-forged and made of Tamahagane carbon steel to be registered in the system. With this paper, its owner in Japan can legally own an authentic Japanese sword. Based on this registration number, we will apply for its export permit.
\nThis paper will need to be returned to the board of education when the sword is being shipped abroad, but you can receive a copy of it. An English translation of this registration paper is available on request.<\/span><\/p>\n
