Antique Japanese Sword Wakizashi Signed by Kanenori with NBTHK Hozon<\/span> Certificate<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u3010Description\u3011<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0This blade was signed by Kanenori (\u517c\u5247). The first-gen Kanenori is known as the founder of San-Ami school, one of the seven most famous schools in the Mino province (Gifu prefecture). The first-gen Kanenori forged swords during the Oei era(1394-1428). The swordsmith\u2019s name Kanenori lasted until the early Edo period for a few generations. There are records where swordsmiths who signed as Kanenori moved to Echigo, Echizen, and Owari to meet the demand of strong Samurai. <\/span>Based on the style and characteristic of this blade, we believe it was forged by one of Kanenori in the late Muromachi period(450-500 years old).<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The MINO swordsmiths style, also known as MINO-DEN, basically has the TOGARI(Pointed shapes protruding from the Hamon )in a classic straight line and random temper line with some white Utsuri. MINO-DEN had its origin from YAMATO-DEN in the late KAMAKURA period(1280-1330). It flourished in the MUROMACHI period(1333-1573) and continued until the EDO period(1603-1868).<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"\u00a0\"\"<\/p>\n

\u00a0MINO-DEN especially prospered during Sengoku Jidai(Warring State period) due to the high demand for weapons. And the location of Mino province beat others. Akechi Mitsuhide controlled Mino province, and Nobunaga Oda ruled Owari province, and Tokugawa Ieyasu was the lord of Suruga (Neighboring areas). There was high demand from those powerful feudal lords and their retainers. Furthermore, so many wars occurred between the Kanto region and the Kyoto area, and Mino is located in the middle, making feudal lords feel convenient to order swords from MINO-DEN. The blades forged in MINO provinces also had the reputation of their practical design and sharpness. Many feudal lords demanded swords forged in the Mino province.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0This blade is appraised as a Hozon Token<\/strong>(\u4fdd\u5b58\u5200\u5263) issued by NBTHK(Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai:\u65e5\u672c\u7f8e\u8853\u5200\u5263\u4fdd\u5b58\u5354\u4f1a). This authentication paper was only given to authentic Japanese swords, well preserved and high quality with artistic value.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Nakago<\/strong>\uff1aNakago is the tang of the Japanese sword.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Japanese swordsmiths left the black rust on the tang because it prevents red rust while the tang is in its handle. And the discoloration of the tang was created over time, and it is a great indicator for a Japanese sword specialist to estimate when the sword was forged.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Koshirae:\u00a0Koshirae is the mounting of the Japanese sword. There are several parts that consist of Koshirae such as Saya(Scabbard), Tsuka(Handle), Tsuba(Handguard).<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The motif of Koshirae is a dragon (\u9f8d, Ryu) and the design is unified with this theme throughout. Originally, dragons were mythical creatures found in ancient traditions and myths from various cultures. In Japan, the dragon is regarded as a symbol of good fortune and auspicious signs. Its body is said to resemble nine different animals: the antlers of a deer, the head of a camel, the eyes of a demon, the neck of a snake, the belly of mizuchi (\u86df, a mythical Japanese creature that resembles a snake with a horn and four legs), the scales of a fish, the claws of a falcon, the palms of a tiger, and the ears of a cow. Due to its unique and fearsome appearance, the dragon was believed to reign at the top of all creatures.<\/span><\/p>\n

Fuchi-Kashira<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aA pair of matching sword fittings that cover the upper and bottom parts of its sword hilt.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0 The kashira (pommel cap) of this fuchi-kashira set features a gold-inlaid dragon, consistent with the motif seen throughout the rest of the sword mounting. The fuchi (collar) is decorated with a tiger. In East Asian culture, the tiger and dragon are often paired together as powerful symbolic creatures\u2014representing opposing but complementary forces such as strength and wisdom, or earth and heaven.<\/span>

Tsuka and Menuki<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aTsuka is the handle of the Japanese sword and Menuki is its decoration.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Tsuba and Habaki<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aTsuba is the handguard for the Japanese Sword and Habaki is the equipment to make the blade not touch its scabbard inside. It prevents the blade from getting rusty and chipped.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0This tsuba features a dragon along with clouds in its design. In nature, clouds bring rain and snow, and their movement has a significant impact on daily weather. In East Asian tradition, clouds are often believed to possess supernatural qualities, and it is said that gods, spirits, and dragons dwell within them.<\/span><\/p>\n

In Japan, there is a belief system in which the dragon is worshipped as a water deity, associated with rainfall and rivers. This cultural and spiritual connection may be one reason why dragon-and-cloud motifs are commonly found in sword fittings, symbolizing power, protection, and the sacred forces of nature.<\/span><\/p>\n

Authentication Paper<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aNBTHK Hozon Certificate for the blade (No. 381009)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0NBTHK<\/span><\/a>, also known as Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai (the Society for the Preservation of the Japan Art Sword), is one of the oldest Japanese sword appraising organizations in modern-day Japan. They authenticated the blade on July 9th in the 20th year of Heisei (2008). They appraised it as Hozon Touken, the blade worth preserving for Japanese society. The purchaser will receive this original certificate as well. We can also translate what is written into English and make a PDF file<\/span><\/a> for your record if you request.<\/span><\/p>\n

Registration Number :\u00a0<\/span> Kanagawa 65741<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span>
\n\u00a0The Board of Education in Kanagawa prefecture issued a registration paper for this sword. It is called Jyu Token Rui Torokusho(\u9283\u5200\u5263\u985e\u767b\u9332\u8a3c). Bunkacho (The Agency for Cultural Affairs) acknowledges a Japanese sword with this paper as a work of art.
\nThe sword needs to be traditionally hand-forged and made of Tamahagane carbon steel to be registered in the system. With this paper, its owner in Japan can legally own an authentic Japanese sword. Based on this registration number, we will apply for its export permit.
\nThis paper will need to be returned to the board of education when the sword is being shipped abroad, but you can receive a copy of it. An English translation of this registration paper is available on request.
