Summary<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0This blade was signed by Oku Izumi no Kami Tadashige (\u5965\u548c\u6cc9\u5b88\u5fe0\u91cd). Tadashige was a swordsmith active during the early-mid Edo period (from the late 17th century to the early 18th century). He was born in Satsuma province (today\u2019s Kagoshima prefecture) as the third son of Oku Tadakiyo (\u5965\u5fe0\u6e05) and learned the sword forging in Settsu province (today\u2019s Osaka) under the second-gen Tsuda Echizen no Kami Sukehiro (\u6d25\u7530\u8d8a\u524d\u5b88\u52a9\u5e83).\u00a0 His swords gained a reputation for their exceptional sharpness, and in the second year of the Genroku era (1689), he was given the title “Izumi-j\u014d,” later changing to “Izumi-no-kami.” Kami is an honorable official title given to skilled and acknowledged swordsmiths from the imperial court.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Second-gen Sukehiro<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Echizen no Kami Sukehiro (\u8d8a\u524d\u5b88\u52a9\u5e83), the second-gen Sukehiro, was one of Osaka\u2019s most skilled and influential swordsmiths in the early Edo period (Mid-Late 17th century), following Awataguchi Tadatsuna and Inoue Shinkai. These three sword makers are called Sanketsu of *Osaka Shinto. The maker\u2019s name Sukehiro lasted three generations, and this blade was made by the second generation. His birth name was Jin no Jyo (\u751a\u4e4b\u4e1e). <\/span>Sukehiro was born in 1637 in Settsu province (Today\u2019s Osaka prefecture) as the son of the first-gen Sukehiro, who was also known as Soboro Sukehiro.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The second-gen Sukehiro learned sword-forging techniques from his father. He became an independent swordsmith and took over his father\u2019s school in 1655 when his father died. He received the honorable title of Echizen no Kami in 1658 for his superb craftsmanship and started to serve Aoyama Munetoshi, who was one of the officials for Osaka castle. It is said that he created about 1670 blades in his career. He kept forging blades until he died at the age of 46 years old (1682). He invented a very particular Hamon (tempering line) called Toran Midareba (\u6fe4\u703e\u4e71\u5203). He became extremely popular in Osaka city, and his fame became nationwide.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Nakago<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aNakago is the tang of the Japanese sword. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Japanese swordsmiths left the black rust on the tang because it prevents red rust while the tang is in its handle. And the discoloration of the tang was created over time, and it is a great indicator for a Japanese sword specialist to estimate when the sword was forged.<\/span><\/p>\n

Habaki<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aHabaki is the equipment to make the blade not touch its scabbard inside. It prevents the blade from getting rusty and chipped.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Authentication Paper<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aNBTHK Tokubetsu Kicho Certificate for the blade<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

NBTHK<\/span><\/a>, also known as Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai (the Society for the Preservation of the Japan Art Sword), is one of the oldest Japanese sword appraising organizations in modern-day Japan. They authenticated the blade on November 3rd in the 41st year of Showa (1966). They appraised it as a Tokubetsu Kiho Touken, an old form of the certificate. The purchaser will receive the original certificate as well. We can also translate what is written into English and make a PDF file<\/span><\/a> for your record if you request.<\/span><\/p>\n

Registration Number : <\/span>Gifu 6201<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The Board of Education in Gifu prefecture issued a registration paper for this sword. It is called Jyu Hou Token Rui Tourokusho (\u9283\u7832\u5200\u5263\u985e\u767b\u9332\u8a3c). Bunkacho (The Agency for Cultural Affairs) acknowledges a Japanese sword with this paper as a work of art.
\nThe sword needs to be traditionally hand-forged and made of Tamahagane carbon steel to be registered in the system. With this paper, its owner in Japan can legally own an authentic Japanese sword. Based on this registration number, we will apply for its export permit.
\nThis paper will need to be returned to the board of education when the sword is being shipped abroad, but you can receive a copy of it. An English translation of this registration paper is available on request.<\/span><\/p>\n
