\u3010Description\u3011<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Summary<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0This blade was forged by Tosa Yoshimitsu (\u571f\u4f50\u5409\u5149). The first-generation Yoshimitsu was the oldest recorded swordsmith in Tosa Province (modern-day K\u014dchi Prefecture). <\/span>The Yoshimitsu lineage began in 1306 (late Kamakura period, Tokuj era) and continued for seven generations until the Eish\u014d and Daiei eras (early 16th century, late-Muromachi period). The first-generation Yoshimitsu is believed to have been influenced by either the Awataguchi Masamitsu school from Yamashiro, or possibly the Senjuin or Tegai schools from Yamato. , This blade was made by a late-gen Yoshimitsu, being active during the late Muromachi period (late 15th century)<\/span><\/p>\n

His works are known for their slender shape and thick kasane (blade thickness), a characteristic construction style. Most of his surviving works are tant\u014d (short swords), which are frequently encountered in historical collections.<\/span><\/p>\n

What is Tanto?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Japanese swords under the blade length of 30cm (11.6 inches) are generally called TANTO, and sometimes TSUBA(\u9354; Hand-Guard) is not attached to the TANTO. It was easy to carry and convenient for close combats.<\/p>\n

It was initially used as a supplemental weapon for Samurai on horseback, who used a pole weapon or long sword in the Kamaura-Muromachi period. Samurai aimed at an unprotected area of his enemy\u2019s armor with Tanto while having to fight with close distance.<\/p>\n

TANTO was named accordingly, depending on how you carry it, such as HUTOKORO-GATANA (\u61d0\u5200; Stomach-Sword) or KOSHI-GATANA(\u8170\u5200; Waist-Sword) or elsewise. TANTO was also a gift for a bride from her family in a traditional Japanese wedding, as it is believed that TANTO would be divine protection from evil power.<\/p>\n

\u00a0This blade is appraised as a Hozon Touken <\/strong>(\u4fdd\u5b58\u5200\u5263) issued by NBTHK (Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai: \u65e5\u672c\u7f8e\u8853\u5200\u5263\u4fdd\u5b58\u5354\u4f1a). This authentication paper was only given to authentic Japanese swords, well preserved and high quality with artistic value.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Kissaki<\/strong>: <\/span>Kissaki is the tip\u00a0of the Japanese sword.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Nakago<\/strong><\/span>: Nakago is the tang of the Japanese sword.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0Japanese swordsmiths left the black rust on the tang because it prevents red rust while the tang is in its handle. And the discoloration of the tang was created over time, and it is a great indicator for a Japanese sword specialist to estimate when the sword was forged.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0This sword features a technique known as Gakumei (\u984d\u9298). Gakumei is a method used to preserve the signature (mei, \u9298) when shortening the blade through a process called \u014csuriage (\u5927\u78e8\u4e0a\u3052). Typically, when a blade is shortened, the original inscription on the tang (nakago, \u830e) is removed. However, with the Gakumei technique, the inscription is carefully cut out in a strip beforehand and later reinserted into the tang to retain the original signature.<\/span><\/p>\n

Specifically, after the blade has been shortened, a space is carved into the tang to accommodate the removed signature, and the extracted inscription is then embedded back into the nakago. This technique allows for the adjustment of the blade\u2019s length while ensuring the preservation of the original mei.<\/span><\/p>\n

Koshirae<\/strong>:<\/span> Koshirae is the mounting of the Japanese sword. There are several parts that consist of Koshirae such as Saya (Scabbard), Tsuka (Handle), Tsuba (Handguard).<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0This Koshirae (\u62f5\u3048) features the wave motif (Hat\u014d-zu, \u6ce2\u6fe4\u56f3) as its central theme, consistently incorporated throughout its design(Fuchi-Kashira, Menuki, Kozuka).<\/span><\/p>\n

Since ancient times, the wave motif has been regarded as an important symbol in Japanese art, representing the dynamic power and vitality of nature. This design vividly portrays powerful, surging waves and rising sprays, capturing a sense of movement and energy.\u00a0In Japanese culture, waves symbolize perseverance and resilience, as they continuously rise and retreat without end. This motif has been cherished across generations and is widely seen in various forms of Japanese art, including ukiyo-e woodblock prints, lacquerware, sword fittings, and textiles.<\/span><\/p>\n

Fuchi-Kashira<\/strong>: A pair of matching sword fittings that cover the upper and bottom parts of its sword hilt.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Registration Number<\/span><\/strong>: Tokyo 85285<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The Board of Education in Tokyo prefecture issued a registration paper for this sword. It is called Jyu Hou Token Rui Torokusho (\u9283\u7832\u5200\u5263\u985e\u767b\u9332\u8a3c). Bunkacho (The Agency for Cultural Affairs) acknowledges a Japanese sword with this paper as a work of art.
\n\u00a0The sword needs to be traditionally hand-forged and made of Tamahagane carbon steel to be registered in the system. With this paper, its owner in Japan can legally own an authentic Japanese sword. Based on this registration number, we will apply for its export permit.
