\n\u00a0This item is the Kouro (\u9999\u7089, incense burner). It is a tool used for heating solid fragrances and releasing aroma components. This Kouro expresses the figure of Kabuto (\u515c).\u00a0The blue, green, and gold colors make this Kouro’s decorative look gorgeously.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Kabuto is a protector for the head. When people started using the Kabuto in the Heian period (around 10-11th century), it was initially designed for practical use such as wearing it to turn the attack by swords and so on. However, the principal purpose of its design has changed with time; Samurais tried to express their dignity, personality, or religion by wearing the characteristic design Kabutos. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The Kuwagata (\u936c\u5f62) is attached to the front of this Kabuto. This Kabuto\u2019s Kuwagata has a shape in which its tip is bifurcated. It is a kind of Maedatemono (\u524d\u7acb\u7269, front decoration) to dignify the appearance. In addition, the figure of a monster-like face, which is called the Shikami\/Shigami (\u7345\u565b), is attached to the Kuwagata. The name Shikami\/Shigami comes from the word \u201c\u9870 (pronounced as Shikami).\u201d It refers to a terrifying Oni (\u9b3c) mask with raised eyebrows, an open mouth with fangs bared, or a frowning Oni or lion mask. The Oni is a kind of monster and is often depicted as the following figure: a human body with horns and fangs. They are usually harmful to people but sometimes helpful. It is because Onis are not just monsters but are imagined in various forms, such as vengeful spirits of humans, legendary gods, Y\u014dkai (\u5996\u602a, monster\/ghost), and spiritual beings, and their definitions differ depending on the scene in which they appear. This Maedatemono\u2019s Shikami has a grim, angry facial expression, and its long horns and large ears make it a virtuous enemy. Perhaps due to the combination of deep red lacquer and gold coloring, it gives off a strong impression of being gorgeous and intimidating. Even a young Samurai would have been intimidated by the enemy from a distance if he wore a Kabuto with this decoration.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The face guards attached to the ends of the Kabuto is called Fukikaeshi (\u5439\u304d\u8fd4\u3057). And you would find golden marks that have the shape of Kiku (\u83ca, chrysanthemum). The chrysanthemum is a flower that symbolizes fall, and people have appreciated it very much since ancient times. A long time ago, the chrysanthemum was used as a medicine to obtain a long life in China, and it was brought to Japan with this thought in the Nara period (648-781). The chrysanthemum has been likened to the sun as its petals form radially. This flower pattern is treated as the symbol of perpetual youth and longevity or good health. \u201cKiku no Gomon (\u83ca\u306e\u5fa1\u7d0b)\u201d is a kind of chrysanthemum pattern, and it has been used as the crest of the Emperor and the royal family in Japan, so it is well-known as a noble pattern.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0On the visior, called Mabisashi (\u7709\u5e87), there is a cloud pattern. Clouds bring rain and snow, and their movements significantly affect the weather of the day. Due to its supernatural power, a theory says that gods, spirits, and dragons dwell in the clouds. Also, the cloud pattern has been associated with magical power, and people thought it an omen of lucky things. In addition, some people wished to obtain a leisurely life in comfort by seeing clouds\u2019 movements (that floats in the sky). Or, as clouds appear repeatedly, its design represents reincarnation. Samurais were always on the verge of life and death on the battlefield. They might have believed in the power of this pattern.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
