Antique Japanese Sword Katana Signed by Nobuyoshi with NBTHK Hozon<\/span> Certificate<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u3010Description\u3011<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0This blade was signed by Echizen no Kami Minamoto Rai Nobuyoshi (\u8d8a\u524d\u5b88\u6e90\u6765\u4fe1\u5409), who was active during the mid Edo period (around the mid-late 17th century).\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0His real name was Takai Kinzaburo, and he was the third son of the first-gen Shinano no Kami Nobuyoshi (\u4fe1\u6fc3\u5b88\u4fe1\u5409), who belonged to Mishina school. Mishina school\u2019s founder was originally from Mino province (today’s Gifu prefecture), exclusively forging blades for Shingen Takeda, a famous feudal lord. Later on, he moved to Yamashiro province (today’s Kyoto) by bringing his four sons and founded his school in Kyoto. The first-gen Shinano no Kami Nobuyoshi (\u4fe1\u6fc3\u5b88\u4fe1\u5409) was known as one of the skilled swordsmiths. He also became one of Kyoto Gokaji (\u4eac\u90fd\u4e94\u935b\u51b6), five prestigious swordsmiths forging in Kyoto in the early Edo period.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Kinzaburo was also from Yamashiro province and forged swords in Abura-no-Koji, Kyoto, as one of Mishina\u2019s school swordsmiths. He received an honorable official title from the imperial court for his excellent craftsmanship and began signing Echizen no Kami Minamoto Rai Nobuyoshi and so on. Later, he moved to Settsu province. And, together with Tanba no Kami Yoshimichi and others, he devoted himself to developing the Mishina school. Among other swordsmiths who had Nobuyoshi in their maker\u2019s name, this Nobuyoshi was known as the most skilled one.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"\u00a0\"\"<\/p>\n

\u00a0Same as the first-gen Shinano no Kami Nobuyoshi, Echizen no Kami Rai Minamoto Nobuyoshi was allowed to inscribe a chrysanthemum emblem, which is the symbol of the Japanese emperor. His sword-forging technique was so great that the emperor licensed him to use this emblem, which was quite honorable for any swordsmiths.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0It is appraised as a\u00a0Hozon Token\u00a0<\/strong>(\u4fdd\u5b58\u5200\u5263) issued by NBTHK (Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai:\u65e5\u672c\u7f8e\u8853\u5200\u5263\u4fdd\u5b58\u5354\u4f1a). This authentication paper was only given to authentic Japanese swords, well preserved and high quality with artistic value.<\/span><\/p>\n

Kissaki<\/strong>:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Kissaki is the tip\u00a0of the Japanese sword.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Nakago<\/strong><\/span>:<\/span> Nakago is the tang of the Japanese sword.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0Japanese swordsmiths left the black rust on the tang because it prevents red rust while the tang is in its handle. And the discoloration of the tang was created over time, and it is a great indicator for a Japanese sword specialist to estimate when the sword was forged.<\/span><\/p>\n

Habaki<\/span><\/strong>\uff1aHabaki is the equipment to make the blade not touch its scabbard inside. It prevents the blade from getting rusty and chipped.\u00a0<\/strong>

Authentication Paper<\/strong>: <\/span>NBTHK Hozon Certificate for the blade (No.3033891)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0NBTHK<\/span><\/a>, also known as Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai (the Society for the Preservation of the Japan Art Sword), is one of the oldest Japanese sword appraising organizations in modern-day Japan. They authenticated the blade on February 21st in the 6th year of Heisei (2024). They appraised it as Hozon Touken, the blade worth preserving for Japanese society. The purchaser will receive this original certificate as well. We can also translate what is written into English and make a PDF file<\/span><\/a> for your record if you request.<\/span><\/p>\n

Registration Number<\/span><\/strong>: Miyazaki 12472<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The Board of Education in Miyazaki prefecture issued a registration paper for this sword. It is called Jyu Hou Token Rui Torokusho (\u9283\u7832\u5200\u5263\u985e\u767b\u9332\u8a3c). Bunkacho (The Agency for Cultural Affairs) acknowledges a Japanese sword with this paper as a work of art.
\n\u00a0The sword needs to be traditionally hand-forged and made of Tamahagane carbon steel to be registered in the system. With this paper, its owner in Japan can legally own an authentic Japanese sword. Based on this registration number, we will apply for its export permit.
\n\u00a0This paper will need to be returned to the board of education when the sword is being shipped abroad, but you can receive a copy of it. An English translation of this registration paper is available on request.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Samurai Museum is familiar with the proper legal procedure for an antique\/ authentic Japanese sword to be exported from Japan.
