Title: Kabuto Zu<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Description<\/strong><\/span>
\n\u00a0This item is a Kakejiku (\u639b\u8ef8, hanging scroll). When displaying a hanging scroll in a Japanese-style room, it is generally\u00a0hung\u00a0on the wall of the Tokonoma (\u5e8a\u306e\u9593). However, no etiquette says you cannot hang a\u00a0hanging\u00a0scroll anywhere other than in Tokonoma or a Japanese-style room. You could enjoy them regardless of where you display them. You could also create an alcove-like space by simply hanging a scroll out of direct sunlight, laying tatami mats under it, and placing Japanese miscellaneous goods and flower arrangements.\u00a0A Tokonoma is a space in a Japanese-style room where the floor is one step higher than the rest of the room. It was initially thought to be a place where gods resided and was created as a space for people of high status to sit. Since the Edo period, Tokonomas have been created in ordinary houses as a place for guests (high-status people) to sit, and it is considered the most sacred and noble place in a Japanese-style room. In recent years, it has often been set up\u00a0as a space for art exhibitions, such as hanging scrolls and displaying flowers and ornaments.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Especially this hanging scroll seems to have been the one that was hung in the season of Tango no Sekku (\u7aef\u5348\u306e\u7bc0\u53e5). The Tango-no Sekku (\u7aef\u5348\u306e\u7bc0\u53e5) is one of the seasonal festivals and generally regarded as the Boy\u2019s Festival. It is said that the Tango-no Sekku comes from the Continent. Since the Muromachi period (1336-1658), there has been a custom in which some kind of items, such as a hanging scroll depicting a Samurai or Samurai armors, were displayed in the hope of boys growing up well and succeeding.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Regarding the design, the figure of a Samurai armor called Kabuto (\u515c, helmet) is depicted. Kabuto is a protector for the head. It seems the Kabuto depicted on this Kakejiku is categorized as the Hoshi Kabuto (\u661f\u515c). The Hoshi Kabuto is a type of Samurai helmet that was born in the middle of the Heian period (\u5e73\u5b89, around 888-1068). Small rivets that hold iron plates together. These rivets are called the Hoshi (\u661f, star). When people started using the Kabuto, it was initially designed for practical use such as wearing it to turn the attack by swords and so on. However, the principal purpose of its design has changed with time; Samurais tried to express their dignity, personality, or religion by wearing the characteristic design Kabutos. Judging from its magnificent decoration of this Kabuto, which was allowed only for commanders, exudes the dignity of a manhood and strength.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The Kuwagata (\u936c\u5f62) is attached to this Kabuto. This Kabuto\u2019s Kuwagata has a shape in which its tip is bifurcated. It is a kind of Maedatemono (\u524d\u7acb\u7269, front decoration) to dignify the appearance.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0You would see another Maedatemono, the figure of a dragon, on this Kabuto. The beard, scales, and even the fine details such as tiptoes are finely depicted, and its dignified figure is brilliantly expressed. Initially, the dragon was an imaginary creature found in ancient foreign traditions or myths. Furthermore, it is regarded as a symbol of auspicious signs. Its body is likened to nine animals: antlers are deer, the head is a camel, eyes are demons, the neck is a snake, belly is the Mizuchi (\u86df, a mythical animal in Japan that looks like a snake and has a horn and four legs), scales are fish, claws are falcons, palms are tigers, and ears are cows. It was thought that the dragon would reign at the top of all animals because of its odd-looking appearance. Also, this dragon’s tail is wrapped around a sword-like object. It seems to be the Sanko-Duka-Ken (\u4e09\u9237\u67c4\u5263) or called Sanko Ken (\u4e09\u9237\u5263), which is a sword that the Fudo Myo-O (\u4e0d\u52d5\u660e\u738b: acalan\u0101tha, one of the objects of worship in Buddhism) brings. \u00a0It is an esoteric Buddhist tool used for esoteric prayer, meditation, purification, and amulets. It is believed that this sword would exorcize evil spirits.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0In addition, on not only the Kuwagata but also the Fukikaeshi (\u5439\u304d\u8fd4\u3057) part, which is attached to the ends of the Kabuto and protects the face from swords, you would find golden marks that have the shape of Kiku (\u83ca, chrysanthemum). The chrysanthemum is a flower that symbolizes fall, and people have appreciated it very much since ancient times. A long time ago, the chrysanthemum was used as a medicine to obtain a long life in China, and it was brought to Japan with this thought in the Nara period (648-781). The chrysanthemum has been likened to the sun as its petals form radially. This flower pattern is treated as the symbol of perpetual youth and longevity or good health. \u201cKiku no Gomon (\u83ca\u306e\u5fa1\u7d0b)\u201d is a kind of chrysanthemum pattern, and it has been used as the crest of the Emperor and the royal family in Japan, so it is well-known as a noble pattern. The Kiku motif is often seen in Kabuto and sword mountings.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Along with the gorgeous appearance of the helmet, there is an atmosphere of bravery and dignity on this hanging scroll.<\/span><\/p>\n
