\u3010Description\u3011<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Summary<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0This blade is attributed to the first-gen Yoshifusa (\u5409\u623f) during the Kan-Ei era (1624-1644: Early Edo period), according to its NTHK appraisal. Yoshifusa was a disciple of the first-generation Hizen Tadayoshi, one of the most renowned swordsmiths representing the Hizen province (today’s Saga prefecture) at the time. Due to his exceptional skill, it is said that he sometimes forged swords on behalf of his master, Tadayoshi. The maker’s name, Yoshifusa, lasted two generations and the second-gen was hired by Takayama Ukon, a famou feudal lord and the second-gen served Shimabara domain durng the Kanbun era (1661-1673).<\/span><\/p>\n

The first-gen Tadayoshi (His Master)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The first-gen Hizen Tadayoshi was born in the third year of the Genki era (1572: Late Muromachi period) as the son of Hashimoto Michihiro in Hizen domain (Today\u2019s Saga prefecture). Tadayoshi\u2019s birthname was Hashimoto Shinzaemon.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0It is said that Hashimoto family had Samurai lineage and served Ryuzoji Daimyo (feudal lord) as a retainer for generations on Kyushu island. However, in\u00a01584, his grandfather Morihiro and Father Michihiro were killed in a war called Okinawa-te no Tatakai, where Ryuzoji clan fought against Shimazu clan. Therefore, Hashimoto family couldn\u2019t keep serving the clan and status of Samurai because Tadayoshi, the head of the family, was just 13 years old.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 The whole family turned the new leaf. Tadayoshi was supported by Dotanuki Zenbei, who was related to Tadayoshi and had served Kato Kiyomasa, a legendary warlord during Sengoku Jidai (Warring state period). It is said that he learned sword-forging techniques from Zenbei for about 13 years.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 In\u00a01596, under the domain\u2019s order, he went to Kyoto to learn the sword-forging techniques from Umetada Myojyu(\u57cb\u5fe0\u660e\u5bff), one of the greatest swordsmiths in the early Edo period. Tadayoshi improved his craftsmanship and returned to the Saga domain three years later (1598). The first head of the Nabeshima clan, Nabeshima Katsushige, appreciated the work of the first-gen Tadayoshi very much. Then, Katsushige appointed him as his Okakaekaji, a swordsmith who exclusively forged swords for a specific domain or clan. And Tadayoshi started to stay near Saga castle, which was the headquarter of the Nabeshima clan. Then, he founded his school, which trained more than 100 swordsmiths during the Edo period. His outstanding skills were passed to the generations of Tadayoshi and among apprentices.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0According to available records, the earliest work he signed his signature with the year is the 5th year of the Keicho era (1600<\/strong>), when he was 29 years old. Interestingly, he revisited Kyoto in the 10th year of the Genwa era (1624<\/strong>) and received an honorable official title of Musashi Daijyo on Feb 18th from the emperor for his excellent craftsmanship. And, he changed his name to Tadayoshi. He made 4 different signatures during his career. They are \u00a0Hizen Koku Shinzaemonnojo Tadayoshi , Hizen Koku Junin Tadayoshi, Hizen Koku Jyu Fujiwara Tadayoshi and Musashi Daijyo Tadahiro. He was active in sword-forging for about 30 years. And he died in the 9th year of the Kanei era (1632).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Yoroi Doshi (\u93a7\u901a\u3057)<\/strong><\/p>\n

This type of Tanto is called Yoroi Doshi (Armor piercing). The most notable characteristic of this blade is its Kasane (The thickness of the blade), which is suitable for aiming at armpits or neck area that is vulnerable even if Samurai armor is worn.<\/p>\n

Nakago<\/strong>: <\/span>Nakago is the tang of the Japanese sword.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0Japanese swordsmiths left the black rust on the tang because it prevents red rust while the tang is in its handle. And the discoloration of the tang was created over time, and it is a great indicator for a Japanese sword specialist to estimate when the sword was forged.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0This type of Nakago is called \u751f\u3076\u830e (Ubu-Nakago, raw stem), and it has not been altered in any way since it was created by the swordsmith, maintaining its original appearance.<\/span><\/p>\n

Habaki<\/strong>: <\/span>Habaki is the equipment to make the blade not touch its scabbard inside. It prevents the blade from getting rusty and chipped.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>

Authentication Paper<\/strong>: <\/span>NTHK Kanteisho Certificate for the blade (No. 12789)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0NTHK<\/span><\/a>, also known as NPO Nihon Touken Hozon Kai, is the oldest organization for sword authentication of Japanese swords in modern times. It was established in 1889 during the post-Samurai era. They authenticated the blade on September 15th in the 6th year of Reiwa (2024). The purchaser will receive this original certificate as well. Registration Number<\/span><\/strong>: <\/span>Aichi 58562<\/span><\/strong><\/span>
\n\u00a0The Board of Education in Aichi prefecture issued a registration paper for this sword. It is called Jyu Ho Token Rui Torokusho (\u9283\u7832\u5200\u5263\u985e\u767b\u9332\u8a3c). Bunkacho (The Agency for Cultural Affairs) acknowledges a Japanese sword with this paper as a work of art.
\nThe sword needs to be traditionally hand-forged and made of Tamahagane carbon steel to be registered in the system. With this paper, its owner in Japan can legally own an authentic Japanese sword. Based on this registration number, we will apply for its export permit.
\n\u00a0This paper will need to be returned to the board of education when the sword is being shipped abroad, but you can receive a copy of it. An English translation of this registration paper is available on request.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
