Also, some people use it to put a small knife or calendar. The Suzuri Bako is often made from lacquered wood. The *Makie (蒔絵) and the *Raden (螺鈿) are popular ornamental techniques for this kind of item. On this Suzuribako, you could enjoy the beauty of the Makie method. Artisans developed various skills to decorate boxes.

The principal motif on this box is the Kari or Gan (雁, wild goose). It depicts two geese standing by the water’s edge in a garden, surrounded by aquatic plants. The wild goose is a migratory bird that represents autumn. Because of its unique call, it is known as “a bird that carries good luck and good news,” meaning that it carries a message with its ancestors and brings good news. This bird was often incorporated into designs for sword mountings and family crests. We would say this bird motif has been familiar to Japanese people since ancient times. Also, the Magan (真雁) is a large waterfowl, generally a dark brown color, that migrates to Japan during the winter. In Japan, they rest in lakes, ponds, and marshes, feeding on fallen grains, grass seeds, and leaves. At dawn, tens of thousands of geese take flight in a coordinated formation known as “Kariyuki”or “Gankou” (雁行, V-shaped flight formation), which has become a traditional winter scene in Japan.

This artwork beautifully captures two geese resting by the water’s edge, highlighting their peaceful moment. The overall design is crafted in black lacquer, with intricate gold detailing of the aquatic plants and geese, emphasizing their graceful beauty. In Japanese culture, geese have long been a symbol of family and the bonds between loved ones. On the underside of the lid, a magnificent Japanese garden is beautifully depicted, which might be the place that drew the geese to rest in this tranquil setting.

The paperweight features a Boke (ボケ/木瓜, Japanese quince) design. The Boke has long been a symbol of longevity and prosperity, representing family bonds and abundance. In particular, it was used as the family crest by the famous Oda clan, symbolizing their rise and fall throughout history. The simple yet powerful design of the Boke reflects the strength and resilience of the Oda family.

*Makie……A typical Japanese lacquer art technique developed uniquely in Japan for about 1,200 years. Firstly, it needs to draw a picture with lacquer on the surface with a thin brush. Next, sprinkle the gold powder from above to show the pattern before the lacquer hardens. This technique makes a gorgeous and elegant look to works.

*Raden…… It is a kind of decorative technique that is often used for traditional craftworks. It uses the pearl part of seashells and puts it into the engraved surface of lacquer or wood. Thanks to its iridescent luster, it gives a luxurious look to works.

*As this item is an antique, please carefully review each photo and check its condition.
