Summary<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0This blade was signed by Harima no Kami Fujiwara Teruhiro (\u64ad\u78e8\u5b88\u85e4\u539f\u8f1d\u5e83). The maker’s name Teruhiro lasted for generations during the early- late Edo period. Based on the signature of the tang, we estimate this blade was forged by the second-gen Teruhiro, who was active during the early Edo period (the early 17th century).<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The first-gen Teruhiro, also known as Higo no Kami Fujiwara Teruhiro (\u80a5\u5f8c\u5b88\u85e4\u539f\u8f1d\u5e83), was originally from the Mino province (today\u2019s Gifu prefecture). He is known as an offspring of Kanetsune, one of the most famous swordsmiths. He firstly learned Mino DEN, a particular sword-forging style created in Mino province. He then became an apprentice of Umeda Myoju (\u57cb\u5fe0\u660e\u5bff), a renowned sword maker in Kyoto during the late Muromachi-early Edo period. He was able to master superb craftsmanship. He is famous for having served Fukushima Masanori (\u798f\u5cf6\u6b63\u5247), a powerful feudal lord in Owari province (today\u2019s Aichi prefecture). After Masanori relocated to Akino province (today\u2019s Hiroshima prefecture) in the 5th year of the Keicho era (1600), the first-gen Teruhiro also followed him. He started to serve Asano clan after Fukushima Masanori was deceased in Akino province. Since then, the swordsmith name lasted 14th generations and prospered throughout the Edo period.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The second-gen Teruhiro, whose original name was Kanehisa, was an apprentice of the first-gen and later became his adopted son-in-law. When Fukushima Masanori was transferred to Hiroshima, the second-gen is said to have followed him with the first-gen. Then, the second-gen Teruhiro received an honorable official title of Harima no Kami from Fukushima Masanori for his excellent craftsmanship in the 14th year of the Keicho era (1609) and became a renowned swordsmith. He also served the Asano family, the new lord of the domain after the Fukushima family like the first-gen. Considering the prestigious background of this school, we believe the 2nd-gen Teruhiro was also a highly skilled sword maker.<\/span><\/p>\n

Horimono (Engraving)<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0This blade has beautiful engravings on both sides. You would find the Horimono (\u5f6b\u308a\u7269, sculpture) of Suken (\u7d20\u5263). The Suken is a simplified design of the Sanko-Duka-Ken (\u4e09\u9237\u67c4\u5263), which is a sword that the Fudo Myo-O (\u4e0d\u52d5\u660e\u738b: acalan\u0101tha, one of the objects of worship in Buddhism) brings. It is an esoteric Buddhist tool used for esoteric prayer, meditation, purification, and amulets. It is believed that this sword would exorcize evil spirits.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0It is appraised as a Tokubetsu Hozon Token <\/strong>(\u7279\u5225\u4fdd\u5b58\u5200\u5263) issued by NBTHK (Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai:\u65e5\u672c\u7f8e\u8853\u5200\u5263\u4fdd\u5b58\u5354\u4f1a). This authentication paper was only given to authentic Japanese swords, especially well preserved and high quality with artistic value.<\/span><\/p>\n

Nakago<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aNakago is the tang of the Japanese sword. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Japanese swordsmiths left the black rust on the tang because it prevents red rust while the tang is in its handle. And the discoloration of the tang was created over time, and it is a great indicator for a Japanese sword specialist to estimate when the sword was forged.<\/span><\/p>\n

Habaki<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aHabaki is the equipment to make the blade not touch its scabbard inside. It prevents the blade from getting rusty and chipped.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>

Authentication Paper<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aNBTHK TOKUBETSU Hozon Certificate for the blade (No. 1021879)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0NBTHK<\/a><\/span><\/span>, also known as Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai (the Society for the Preservation of the Japan Art Sword), is one of the oldest Japanese sword appraising organizations in modern-day Japan. They authenticated the blade on December 15th in the 5th year of Reiwa (2023). They appraised it as Tokubetsu Hozon Touken, the blade especially worth preserving for Japanese society. The purchaser will receive this original certificate as well. We can also translate what is written into English and make a PDF file<\/span><\/a><\/span> for your record if you request.<\/span><\/p>\n

Registration Number : Wakayama 30031<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The Board of Education in Wakayama prefecture issued a registration paper for this sword. It is called Jyu Hou Token Rui Tourokusho (\u9283\u7832\u5200\u5263\u985e\u767b\u9332\u8a3c). Bunkacho (The Agency for Cultural Affairs) acknowledges a Japanese sword with this paper as a work of art.
\nThe sword needs to be traditionally hand-forged and made of Tamahagane carbon steel to be registered in the system. With this paper, its owner in Japan can legally own an authentic Japanese sword. Based on this registration number, we will apply for its export permit.
\nThis paper will need to be returned to the board of education when the sword is being shipped abroad, but you can receive a copy of it. An English translation of this registration paper is available on request.<\/span><\/p>\n
