Also, some people use it to put a small knife or calendar. The Suzuri Bako is often made from lacquered wood. The *Makie (\u8494\u7d75) and the *Raden (\u87ba\u923f) are popular ornamental techniques for this kind of item. Artisans developed various skills to decorate boxes.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 The Suzuri (\u786f, inkstone), Bunchin (\u6587\u93ae, paperweight), Fude (\u7b46, brush), and a small knife are stored in this Suzuri Bako. If you have a Sumi (\u58a8, inkstick), you could use these tools for Japanese calligraphy. You could also display this Suzuri Bako to enjoy as a part of the interior decoration in your room. When we write this flower\u2019s name in Japanese, its second letter means mountain hermit medicine that would give us eternal youth. \u00a0 Regarding the design of the inside of this lid, a pair of Minogame (\u84d1\u4e80) is depicted. The name Mino (\u84d1) means a straw raincoat and Kame (\u4e80) means a turtle. In real life, turtles called Minogame usually grow the seaweed and algae on their shell. The Minogame depicted on this lid have tails or algae resembling a farmer\u2019s straw coat. According to a theory, this kind of Minogame\u2019s design was brought to Japan from the Continent in the Heian period. Then, it is regarded as a auspicious creature and believed as a symbol of longevity and wisdom in Japan.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 You would also find the butterfly motif tool, which might be a paperweight, by the inkstone. People preferred the butterfly pattern due to its growth process, beauty, and auspiciousness among the various animal patterns. A larva becomes a chrysalis, and it grows up into a butterfly. Since this insect changes its looks, it symbolizes being reborn; therefore, Samurai loved this design. In this way, butterflies are seen as symbols of human life, death, and resurrection and are said to house the souls of the dead.<\/span><\/p>\n
