Summary<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0This sword was signed by Kashu Yukimitsu (\u52a0\u5dde\u884c\u5149)\u00a0 in Kaga province (today’s Ishikawa Prefecture) during the Muromachi period (1445-1568). <\/span>We assume that the sword is of exceptional quality because Yukimitsu belonged to the Fujishima school (\u85e4\u5cf6\u6d3e), a well-known school, and because of the longevity of the name \u201cYukimitsu\u201d,which lasted many generations during the Muromachi period. The first-gen Yukimitsu is said to have been active during the Kosho era (1455-1457) and was an apprentice of Fujishima Tomoshige.\u00a0<\/span>Also, the sword might have been originally owned by a Samurai who fought in many battles alongside high-class Samurais, as there were many battles during this period (Sengoku Jidai).<\/span><\/p>\n

About the Fujishima School<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0The Fujishima school was a prestigious school that flourished in Kaga Province during the Muromachi period (1336-1573). <\/span>It was founded in the early Nanbokucho Period by the first generation, Fujishima Tomoshige (\u85e4\u5cf6\u53cb\u91cd), and its name continued for several generations from the early Nanbokucho Period to the late Edo Period (early 14th century to late 19th century).<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The first generation Tomoshige is said to have been a pupil of Rai Kunitoshi, one of the most famous swordsmiths in Yamashiro Province (today’s Kyoto) from the late Kamakura Period to the early Nanbokucho Period. Tomoshige originally lived in Echizen Province (today’s Fukui Prefecture), but later moved to Kaga Province and founded the Fujishima school.<\/span><\/p>\n

Maeda Clan<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0In the late Muromachi period, Maeda clan started to control Kaga domain. Maeda clan was originally a retainer of the Oda family, who ruled Owari province (today\u2019s Nagoya area in Aichi prefecture).<\/span><\/p>\n

The Maeda clan was one of the most influential families in Samurai history. The first head of the Maeda clan was Toshie Maeda. He climbed the social ladder of Samurai society and became the feudal lord of Kaga Province (today\u2019s Ishikawa prefecture). He had a vast rice fief that fed 100 million grown-up adults, which is called Hyakuman Goku. Toshie Maeda had a close tie with Oda Nobunaga and Hideyoshi Toyotomi. Since Tomoshige lived in this domain, he likely served the Maeda clan.<\/p>\n

\u00a0It is appraised as a Hozon Token <\/strong>(\u4fdd\u5b58\u5200\u5263) issued by NBTHK (Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai:\u65e5\u672c\u7f8e\u8853\u5200\u5263\u4fdd\u5b58\u5354\u4f1a). This authentication paper was only given to authentic Japanese swords, especially well preserved and high quality with artistic value.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Japanese swordsmiths left the black rust on the tang because it prevents red rust while the tang is in its handle. And the discoloration of the tang was created over time, and it is a great indicator for a Japanese sword specialist to estimate when the sword was forged.<\/span><\/p>\n

Koshirae\uff1a<\/span>Koshirae is the mounting of the Japanese sword. There are several parts that consist of Koshirae such as Saya (Scabbard), Tsuka (Handle), Tsuba (Handguard).<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Authentication Paper<\/strong>\uff1aNBTHK Hozon Certificate for the blade (No. 3020756)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0NBTHK<\/a><\/span>, also known as Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai (the Society for the Preservation of the Japan Art Sword), is one of the oldest Japanese sword appraising organizations in modern-day Japan. They authenticated the blade on May 23rd in the first year of Reiwa (2019). They appraised it as Hozon Touken, the blade worth preserving for Japanese society. The purchaser will receive this original certificate as well. We can also translate what is written into English and make a PDF file<\/span><\/a> for your record if you request.<\/span><\/p>\n

Registration Number :<\/span> Kyoto 40644<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The Board of Education in Kyoto prefecture issued a registration paper for this sword . It is called Jyu Token Rui Torokusho (\u9283\u5200\u5263\u985e\u767b\u9332\u8a3c). Bunkacho (The Agency for Cultural Affairs) acknowledges a Japanese sword with this paper as a work of art.
\nThe sword needs to be traditionally hand-forged and made of Tamahagane carbon steel to be registered in the system. With this paper, its owner in Japan can legally own an authentic Japanese sword. Based on this registration number, we will apply for its export permit.
\nThis paper will need to be returned to the board of education when the sword is being shipped abroad, but you can receive a copy of it. An English translation of this registration paper is available on request.<\/span><\/p>\n
