Antique Japanese Sword Katana Signed by Kaneyuki with NBTHK Hozon<\/span> Certificate<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u3010Description\u3011<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0This blade was signed by Inshu Ju Kaneyuki (\u56e0\u5dde\u4f4f\u517c\u884c) in the Koka era (1844-1848). He was thought to be active in the late Edo period (the mid 19th century). It is said that his ancestor belonged to Naoe Shizu (\u76f4\u6c5f\u5fd7\u6d25) school, one of the most prestigious schools in Mino province (today’s Gifu prefecture). Inshu is another name for Inaba province (today’s Tottori prefecture) and Inaba Jyu means that he resided in this area when he forged this blade.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0During the end of the Kamakura period (early 14th century), a swordsmith named Kaneuji moved from Yamato province (today\u2019s Nara prefecture) to Shizu village in Mino province and founded Naoe school. He is known as one of Masamune Jittesu (\u6b63\u5b97\u4f4f\u54f2), one of the ten apprentices of Masamune, one of the most famous swordsmiths in Japanese history. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0In the Nanbokucho period, his son and apprentices, including Kanetomo, Kanetoshi, and Kanenobu, moved the school to Naoe village in Mino province. Those who belonged to this school were called Naoe Shizu swordsmiths based on the fact that they lived in both Naoe and Shizu villages.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The sword-forging in Mino flourished during Sengoku Jidai (Warring State period), and later the swordsmiths in Mino began to move to other areas, such as the city of Edo, Osaka, and Kaga after the late Azuchi Momoyama – the early Edo period (the late 16th – the early 17th century). And Kaneyuki (\u517c\u884c) moved to the Inaba domain in Inaba province (today’s Tottori prefecture).<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\" \"\"<\/span><\/p>\n

Mino Province<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The swordsmiths of Mino province, with their unwavering dedication and unparalleled craftsmanship, developed a unique sword-forging tradition known as MINO-DEN. This tradition was characterized by the TOGARI (Pointed shapes protruding from the Hamon ) in a classic straight line and a random temper line with some white Utsuri. MINO-DEN, with its roots in YAMATO-DEN in the late KAMAKURA period (1280-1330), flourished during the Nanbokucho-Muromachi period (1333-1573) and continued its legacy until the Edo period(1603-1868). The evolution and endurance of MINO-DEN stand as a testament to the skill and artistry of these swordsmiths.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0This blade is appraised as a Hozon Touken <\/strong>(\u4fdd\u5b58\u5200\u5263) issued by NBTHK (Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai: \u65e5\u672c\u7f8e\u8853\u5200\u5263\u4fdd\u5b58\u5354\u4f1a). This authentication paper was only given to authentic Japanese swords, well preserved and high quality with artistic value.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Kissaki<\/strong>: <\/span><\/span>Kissaki is the tip\u00a0of the Japanese sword.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Nakago<\/strong><\/span>: Nakago is the tang of the Japanese sword.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0Japanese swordsmiths left the black rust on the tang because it prevents red rust while the tang is in its handle. And the discoloration of the tang was created over time, and it is a great indicator for a Japanese sword specialist to estimate when the sword was forged.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Koshirae<\/strong>:<\/span> Koshirae is the mounting of the Japanese sword. There are several parts that consist of Koshirae such as Saya (Scabbard), Tsuka (Handle), Tsuba (Handguard).<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Fuchi-Kashira<\/strong>: A pair of matching sword fittings that cover the upper and bottom parts of its sword hilt.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The motif of this Fuchi Kashira is the dragon (\u9f8d, Ryu).<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Initially, the dragon is an imaginary creature found in ancient Chinese traditions or myths. Furthermore, it is regarded as a symbolic beast of auspicious signs. Its body is likened to nine animals: antlers are deer, the head is a camel, eyes are demons, the neck is a snake, belly is Mizuchi (\u86df, mythical animal in Japan which looks like a snake and have a horn and four legs), scales are fish, claws are falcons, palms are tigers, and ears are cows. It was thought that the dragon would reign at the top of all animals because of its odd-looking appearance.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0In ancient China, the dragon pattern was used for emperors\u2019 clothing so that people strictly defined its shape or even the number of nails. On the other hand, the dragon pattern does not have detailed rules to represent classes in Japan. However, still, it maintains its meaning as the all-purpose auspicious pattern.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Also, in Japan, there is a belief that worships dragon as a water god and is called Ryujin Shinkou (\u7adc\u795e\u4fe1\u4ef0). Since rice cultivation flourished in this country, water is always an essential resource. Therefore, the dragon motif has been familiar to Japanese people since a long time ago.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTsuka and Menuki<\/strong>: Tsuka is the handle of the Japanese sword and Menuki is its decoration.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The motif of this Menuki is also the dragon, same as the Fuchi Kashira.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\" \"\"<\/p>\n

Tsuba and Habaki<\/strong>: Tsuba is the handguard for the Japanese Sword and Habaki is the equipment to make the blade not touch its scabbard inside. It prevents the blade from getting rusty and chipped.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The dragon painted gold is depicted on this Tsuba. Also, it is unique that this dragon seems to be flying through the cloud as its body can be seen on both sides of this Tsuba.<\/span>

Saya<\/strong>: <\/span>Saya is the scabbard for the Japanese sword.\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Authentication Paper<\/strong>: <\/span>NBTHK Hozon Certificate for the blade (No.3033884)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0NBTHK<\/span><\/a>, also known as Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai (the Society for the Preservation of the Japan Art Sword), is one of the oldest Japanese sword appraising organizations in modern-day Japan. They authenticated the blade on Feb 21st in the 6th year of Reiwa (2024). They appraised it as Hozon Touken, the blade worth preserving for Japanese society. The purchaser will receive this original certificate as well. We can also translate what is written into English and make a PDF file<\/span><\/a> for your record if you request.<\/span><\/p>\n

Registration Number<\/span><\/strong>: Hyogo 67089<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The Board of Education in Hyogo prefecture issued a registration paper for this sword. It is called Jyu Token Rui Torokusho (\u9283\u5200\u5263\u985e\u767b\u9332\u8a3c). Bunkacho (The Agency for Cultural Affairs) acknowledges a Japanese sword with this paper as a work of art.
\n\u00a0The sword needs to be traditionally hand-forged and made of Tamahagane carbon steel to be registered in the system. With this paper, its owner in Japan can legally own an authentic Japanese sword. Based on this registration number, we will apply for its export permit.
\n\u00a0This paper will need to be returned to the board of education when the sword is being shipped abroad, but you can receive a copy of it. An English translation of this registration paper is available on request.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
