Title: Heianjo-style, <\/span>Mizumo chirashi Zu<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

This item is a set of 2 antique Tsubas.<\/span><\/p>\n

Description<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Based on their appearance, we estimate these Tsubas could be categorized as the Heianjo-style Tsuba.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0This style of Tsubas was established in Yamashiro (\u5c71\u57ce, today\u2019s Kyoto Prefecture). According to a theory, this school was born during the reign of the sixth Shogun (\u5c06\u8ecd, general) of the Muromachi (\u5ba4\u753a) Shogunate. And its style was influenced by the tastes of the Shogun. The works of this school could be classified into two types according to their noticeable characteristics. The one is the Heanjo Sukashi Tsuba (\u5e73\u5b89\u57ce\u900f\u9414), which is generally called the Kyou Sukashi Tsuba (\u4eac\u900f\u9414). Most Tsubas have circle shapes, and motifs are engraved dynamically with openwork. The refined composition and outstanding techniques give the impression that metalworkers attached importance to the beauty of openwork more than the practicality of a Tsuba itself. Another type is the Heanjo Zougan Tsuba (\u5e73\u5b89\u57ce\u8c61\u5d4c\u9414), which is also called the Heianjo Shinchu Zougan Tsuba (\u5e73\u5b89\u57ce\u771f\u936e\u8c61\u5d4c\u9414). Shinchu (\u771f\u936e) means brass and Zougan (\u8c61\u5d4c) means inlay in Japanese. This style inherited Ounin Tsuba\u2019s (\u5fdc\u4ec1\u9414) techniques. Motifs such as Botan (\u7261\u4e39, peony), Nanten (\u5357\u5929, nandina), or Karakusa (\u5510\u8349, arabesque) patterns are inlaid with brass on circle-shaped iron Tsubas. Later, artisans started using gold, silver, and Shakudou (\u8d64\u9285, an alloy of copper and gold) to create more ornate Tsuba works. And, this Tsuba is especially categorized as the Heanjo Zougan Tsuba (\u5e73\u5b89\u57ce\u8c61\u5d4c\u9414).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0About the design of this Tsuba, we assume the algae pattern, which is also called Mizumo (\u6c34\u85fb), is depicted. According to a theory, the algae or seaweed is said to represent truth, sensuality, and so on.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Also, some kinds of family crests are engraved with openwork, which is called the Bukan Sukashi (\u6b66\u8266\u900f). Among the family crests designed on this Tsuba, the Kashiwa (\u67cf, oak) Mon is included. There are several types of the Kashiwa Mon, and on this Tsuba, the Mitsu Kashiwa (\u4e09\u3064\u67cf), a mark of three leaves, is used.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0In the past, Japanese people used oak leaves as vessels for serving food (tableware). This plant is familiar to ancient Japanese people since it is related to food, an essential element in daily life. These lifestyle habits also have a significant impact on the field of faith. Religions at that time arose spontaneously from people\u2019s everyday lives and worshiped \u201cnature\u201d (the sun, mountains, rivers, oceans), which greatly influenced survival. It had a straightforward and primitive structure in which \u201cone prays by making a Kumotsu (\u4f9b\u7269, offering) to the object.\u201d Leaves of plants such as oak were used as containers for offerings, which is considered to reflect the lifestyle of the time. These customs were passed on to the Shinto (\u795e\u9053), which developed from this primitive religion, and oak leaves are still used today as vessels for offerings at Shinto rituals. Perhaps due to this background, a sense of value that finds \u201csacredness\u201d and \u201causpiciousness\u201d in oak leaves seems to have developed. In this way, oak had a certain degree of familiarity with aristocratic society, and from an early stage, it was turned into patterns and used to decorate clothing and furniture.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0As mentioned above, Shintoism has a strong connection with oak. Hence, the Kashiwa emblem was initially particularly popular as a crest for a shrine or its enshrined deity or as a family emblem for shrine families. The Kashiwa crest gradually spread to Samurai families; however, this is thought to have been through objects of worship or relationships with Shinto forces. In addition, oak leaves have a habit of not losing old leaves until new ones replace them, so it is said that \u201cgenerations are uninterrupted\u201d and \u201ctransfer of supremacy\u201d (using the word \u8449 \u201cleaf\u201d as \u8987 \u201chegemony\u201d). People favored this plant pattern because it was found to be a good luck carrier, such as not causing trouble due to the change of generations. In the Edo period, family crests began to spread to the ordinary people. It could be said that the fact that it was one of the popular family crests that gained much support from the ordinary people who had new family crests has led to the widespread adoption of the Kashiwa crest today.<\/span><\/p>\n
