Summary<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0This blade is attributed to Noshu Seki ju Kanemasa (\u6fc3\u5dde\u95a2\u4f4f\u517c\u6b63), whose real name is Ono Masami (\u5927\u91ce\u6b63\u5df3) and one of the most famous swordsmiths using the most difficult sword forging technique called the Shihozume-gitae (\u56db\u65b9\u8a70\u935b\u3048). He was born in 1923 and active during the early Showa era (Early 20th century) in Gifu prefecture. Also, his excellent sword forging skill was designated as the Important intangible cultural property of Japan in the Gifu Prefecture in 1997.<\/span><\/p>\n

About Modern Swordsmith<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0There are around 150-200 registered swordsmiths in Japan today. To legally produce Japanese swords, one needs to pass the national exam given by the Agency for Cultural Affairs(Bunka-Cho) and receive the license. Before taking the exam, one must finish his or her apprenticeship under a licensed master for more than five years.<\/span>
\nThose who practice Iaido(\u5c45\u5408\u9053) tend to use those modern swords, and there are modern Japanese sword collectors nationwide.<\/span>
\nThe modern Japanese sword makers are researching old ways to forge swords and trying to recreate ancient-style swords. They are the ones who keep the tradition of Japanese history alive.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Japanese swordsmiths left the black rust on the tang because it prevents red rust while the tang is in its handle. And the discoloration of the tang was created over time, and it is a great indicator for a Japanese sword specialist to estimate when the sword was forged.<\/span><\/p>\n

Koshirae\uff1aKoshirae is the mounting of the Japanese sword. There are several parts that consist of Koshirae such as Saya (Scabbard), Tsuka (Handle), Tsuba (Handguard).<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Fuchi-Kashira<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aA pair of matching sword fittings that cover the upper and bottom parts of its sword hilt.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Tsuka and Menuki<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aTsuka is the handle of the Japanese sword and Menuki is its decoration.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The handle is covered with stingray skin to reinforce the handle and not slip when its owner holds it. The black lacquered skin includes the handle.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0If you focus on Menuki, you will see golden motifs. It is a family crest called the Idutsu (\u4e95\u7b52). The Idutsu (\u4e95\u7b52) crest is a family crest with a well motif. Generally, the well-shaped wooden structure surrounding the above-ground part of the well is called the Igeta (\u4e95\u6841), and the circular one is called the Izutsu. In the family crests, the square one is called the Izutsu. A well is a crucial place filled with water and should not be polluted. In other words, it is thought that it came to be used as a family crest because it is indispensable for life. A theory says the simplicity of this motif was favored among Samurai families.<\/span><\/p>\n

Tsuba and Habaki<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aTsuba is the handguard for the Japanese Sword and Habaki is the equipment to make the blade not touch its scabbard inside. It prevents the blade from getting rusty and chipped.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0This Tsuba is categoraized as the Wan-gata Tsuba (\u6900\u5f62\u9354), whose shape is similar to a Japanese traditional bowl called the Wan (\u6900). This type of Tsuba is made by hammering out from the back side to give it a saucer-like bulge, similar to a bowl.<\/span><\/p>\n

Saya<\/strong><\/span>\uff1a Saya is the scabbard for the Japanese sword.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Authentication Paper<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aNTHK Kateisho Certificate for the blade<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0NTHK<\/span><\/a>, also known as NPO Nihon Touken Hozon Kai, is the oldest organization for sword authentication of Japanese swords in modern times. It was established in 1910 during the post-Samurai era. They authenticated the blade on May 19th in the 6th year of Reiwa (2024), which is the highest appraisal in NTHK. Registration Number : <\/span>Yamanashi 23627<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The Board of Education in Yamanashi prefecture issued a registration paper for this sword . It is called Jyu Token Rui Torokusho (\u9283\u5200\u5263\u985e\u767b\u9332\u8a3c). Bunkacho (The Agency for Cultural Affairs) acknowledges a Japanese sword with this paper as a work of art.
\nThe sword needs to be traditionally hand-forged and made of Tamahagane carbon steel to be registered in the system. With this paper, its owner in Japan can legally own an authentic Japanese sword. Based on this registration number, we will apply for its export permit.
\nThis paper will need to be returned to the board of education when the sword is being shipped abroad, but you can receive a copy of it. An English translation of this registration paper is available on request.<\/span><\/p>\n
