Antique Samurai Helmet Late Edo Period Sanjuni Ken Suji Kabuto <\/strong>with<\/strong> Tokubetsu Kicho<\/strong><\/span> Shiryo Certificate<\/strong><\/span> Prime Material: Iron<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0This Kabuto was made by Kurume ju Minamoto no Kagenobu (\u4e45\u7559\u7c73\u4f4f\u6e90\u666f\u4fe1), who was thought to serve for Kurume (\u4e45\u7559\u7c73: today’s Fukuoka prefecture) clan in the late Edo period.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0Suji Kabuto consists of many small riveted iron plates to form its shape. This helmet has Sanjuni (thirty two in Japanese) iron plates. Suji means a stripe in Japanese, and you can see 32 stripes in this helmet. A high-class Samurai might have owned this helmet.<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0The Kabuto (\u515c, helmet) is a protector for the head. When people started using the Kabuto, it was initially designed for practical use. However, the principal purpose of its design has changed with time; Samurais tried to express their dignity, personality, or religion by wearing the characteristic design Kabutos. According to a theory, these unique designed Kabutos were made from the late Muromachi period to the Edo period. This type of Kabuto is categorized as the Kawari Kabuto (\u5909\u308f\u308a\u515c), and a variety of materials were used to create them. For example, animal fur, seashells, plants, and papers were used as materials for decoration.<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0Before the Kawari Kabuto’s production, the Suji Kabuto (\u7b4b\u515c) has appeared during the Nanbokuchou (\u5357\u5317\u671d, 1337-1392) period. At that time, the tactic was gradually changed from the piggyback fight style to battle with the Tachi (\u592a\u5200) sword and the Naginata (\u8599\u5200, Japanese halberd) on the ground. Therefore, there was a rise in demand for the weight saving of the Kabuto. Also, in order to turn the attack by swords, a new type of structure was invented; it is the Suji Kabuto (\u7b4b\u515c). Its form slides swords’ attacks when weapons hit the Kabuto. It is said that the production of the Suji Kabuto prospered in the Muromachi (\u5ba4\u753a, 1336-1573) period. The Suji Kabuto production continued in the Edo period also; however, iron plates that Kabuto makers used at that time were thicker than the Muromachi period’s Suji Kabuto. Therefore, it was heavier, and we understand that then people cherished the Suji Kabuto to enjoy the old-style Kabuto, not to wear it on the battlefields.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n \u00a0The Maedate (\u524d\u7acb, front decoration) of this Kabuto is the crescent moon motif. It was a trendy design among Samurais due to a belief. According to a theory, the crescent moon design of the Maetate comes from the Myouken (\u5999\u898b) belief. This religion was born in India. It was mixed with the Polestar belief and was brought to Japan from the Continent. In the Myouken belief, the moon and stars were the symbols of faith. The Myouken Bosatsu (\u5999\u898b\u83e9\u85a9, \u83e9\u85a9 means Bodhisattva) fulfills all wishes such as fertility of rich harvest, peace, the prosperity of the clan, healing of illness, longevity, success in business, traffic safety, academic achievement, marriage, etcetera. This theory tells us how the moon motif had a deep relationship with Samurai culture.<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0Also, the Ushirodate (\u5f8c\u7acb, back decoration) is attached to this Kabuto. These are kinds of Tatemono (\u7acb\u7269); it is a general term for items that decorate a Kabuto and show off the wearer\u2019s dignity and exaggerate their presence. The designs included standing objects with motifs of animals, plants, and vessels and Tatemonos rooted in religious beliefs, such as the sun and moon. They were made of various materials, including iron, copper, gold, silver, brass, wood, bamboo, animal horns, tusks, and leather. This decoration is classified as follows depending on where it is attached on a Kabuto: Maedate, Zudate (\u982d\u7acb, ornament attached to the top of the head), Wakidate (\u8107\u7acb, side decoration), and Ushirodate (\u5f8c\u7acb). This type of decoration using a copper pheasant’s feather is called “\u5c71\u9ce5\u5c3e\u306e\u63b4\u5dee\u201d, which was only used for the feudal lords’ Kabuto.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0Please focus on the Fukikaeshi (\u5439\u304d\u8fd4\u3057) part. It protects the face from swords and also shows its beautiful workmanship. Family crests are sometimes designed on this part, as seen on this Kabuto. You will find a golden plant with small flowers and leaves is designed.\u00a0<\/span>It is the Rindou (\u7adc\u80c6, gentian) and also called the Sasa-Rindou (\u7b39\u7adc\u80c6), whose name combines the Sasa (\u7b39, bamboo grass) and the Rindou, as the leaves of this plant resemble bamboo grasses. In this crest, five leaves and five flowers are arranged alternately in a wheel-like pattern, so this family crest is especially called the Rindou-Guruma (\u7adc\u80c6\u8eca). It is said that this family crest began to be used for Murakami Genji (\u6751\u4e0a\u6e90\u6c0f), the member of the Imperial Family at that time, in the Kamaura period, so it is one of the family crests with a long history. Also, Hishi-nui (\u83f1\u7e2b), a decoration with cross knots, is applied on this Kabuto.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n Certification\uff1aTokubetsu <\/span><\/span>Kicho Shiryo Certificate<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n \u00a0The certificate was issued by The Association for the Research and Preservation of Japanese Helmets and Armor, which is the most trusted Japanese armor appraiser in Japan. Tokubestu Kicho Shiryo means special rare article. \nDryness, humidity, and bad ventilation might deteriorate the condition of antique Samurai armor\/helmet. The best temperature to preserve Samurai armor\/helmet is around 20\u2103 in Celsius, and humidity should be about 60%.\u00a0 Direct sunlight should be avoided. We recommend storing armors\/helmets in a room with good ventilation. If you like to display them outside the boxes for a prolonged time, we suggest using a glass case in order for dust not to be accumulated easily.
