\u00a0This wooden sword stand is suitable for exhibiting a Katana sword. As seen in the example pictures, you could also display a Daisho (Katana & Wakizashi) set. This sword stand has a refined look. This sword stand is entirely painted with lacquer, and each motif is elegantly expressed with a traditional Japanese craft method, Makie (\u8494\u7d75) technique. The Makie is a typical Japanese lacquer art technique developed uniquely in Japan for about 1,200 years. Firstly, it needs to draw a picture with lacquer on the surface with a thin brush. Next, sprinkle the gold powder from above to show the pattern before the lacquer hardens. This technique makes a gorgeous and elegant look to works. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0About the design of this sword stand, each side has a completely different look. We believe that there is no problem in using either side facing forward based on your taste. The principal theme of this design is called the Matsutakazu (\u677e\u9df9\u56f3), which is one of the classic Japanese designs. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0In the design of this sword stand on both sides, you\u00a0 can see pine trees (\u677e: Matsu) and the hawk (\u9df9: Taka). The unique point of the design is while on one side, the hawk seems to be crouching, on the other side, the hawk stands and seems to stare into the distance.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0As pine trees keep their green color throughout the years by withstanding severe heat and cold, people thought the trees signify unabated prosperity. Also, a hawk is an intelligent bird used for hunting, and it is called a falconry. It was famous as a recreation among high-class Samurai warriors. In the old days, it was also familiar with emperors and royal families, so it might be why hawks were regarded as a symbol of the ruler\u2019s authority. During the warring period, the boy\u2019s success was to become an excellent Samurai; therefore, it has been thought that men (Samurai) and the hawk had a deep connection as a symbol of advancement and authority. Many Samurai warriors favored this design based on that reason. Furthermore, their wings were used for one of the Samurai\u2019s primary weapons: an arrow (They put hawk\u2019s wings as arrow\u2019s feathers). The arrow itself is reminiscent of victory or defeat, battlefield; it is not difficult to imagine that Samurai also liked the hawk wings attracted to arrows. In this way, the motifs that have deep connections with Samurai culture were incorporated into this sword stand.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0In addition, the you could find the family crest called the Hanabishi (\u82b1\u83f1: petals designed in a rhombus) pattern: \u00a0This pattern became a Yusoku Monyou (\u6709\u8077\u6587\u69d8: generic term for designs of court nobles\u2019 clothing or furnishings, these designs have unique and elegant styles) during the Heian period (794-1185). And people loved it as an auspicious pattern. The family crest is one of the unique Japanese cultures that has continued from ancient times to today. It represents one\u2019s lineage, rank, and social standing of a family. According to a theory, during the period that strong clans gained renown, people started using the family name. The name of the land was used as the family name to distinguish the family members who moved to other areas from the others. Therefore, a family crest has a role in showing the family name. After that, court nobles and Samurai families also started using family crests.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
