Summary<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0This blade was attributed to Nioh (\u4e8c\u738b). Although the authentication paper doesn\u2019t mention when it was approximately made, we contacted NBTHK to confirm the detail of the attribution. They believe it was created during the late Kamakura period (about 700 years old) based on the blade\u2019s characteristics. Nioh is the group of swordsmiths (school) that flourished from the mid-Kamakura period to the late Muromachi period (500-750 years ago) and lasted until the Edo period(150\u2014400 years ago).<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The school was founded by Nioh Taro Kiyotsuna (\u4e8c\u738b\u592a\u90ce\u6e05\u7db1) in Suo Province(today\u2019s Yamaguchi prefecture). According to his remaining work, the oldest blade was forged in 1265. It is currently enshrined in Itsukushima Shrine in Hiroshima. It is said that he started to forge swords in around 1205(early Kamakura period). The Nioh swordsmiths inherited the part of its founder\u2019s name \u6e05(Kiyo) such as \u6e05\u623f(Kiyofusa), \u6e05\u9577(Kiyonaga).<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0There were a lot of lands in Suo Province controlled by the Todaiji temple in the Kamakura-Muromachi period. It is said that Nioh school and Yamato swordsmiths from Nara prefecture had a strong relationship and technological exchange. That is why the blades forged by Nioh swordsmiths had a strong influence from YAMATO-DEN.<\/span>
\n*Todaiji temple is located in Nara prefecture. Before the Edo period, temples and shrines gained strong political influence.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The name Nioh came from the legend that the Tachi blade forged by Kiyotsuna(the founder of Nioh school) was able to save the Nioh statue by cutting the chain connected to it when Nioh temple was on fire.<\/span>
\nAnother theory was that Nioh swordsmiths lived in a village called Nioh no Sho(\u4e8c\u4fdd<\/span>\u5e84) and started to call themselves Nioh swordsmiths.<\/p>\n

Ubu Nakago (\u751f\u830e)<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Ubu Nakago is a Japanese sword terminology that refers to a blade that hasn\u2019t been shortened. This blade has a cutting edge length of 70.0 cm. It is Ubu Nakago, meaning it was never shortened since its creation. It was a common act among Samurai to have his Katana shortened to follow the imposed regulations or to adjust for his body size. You can often see the shortened blades made during the Kamakura-Muromachi period. However, the size of this blade hasn\u2019t changed, and it is rare to find such a piece made before the Edo period.<\/span><\/p>\n

Tachi (\u592a\u5200)<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0Based on\u00a0 its characteristics, NBTHK judged it as a Tachi. Tachi was mainly used by an armored Samurai with one hand on horseback from the Heian period (794-1185 A.D.) until the early Muromachi period. TACHI was suspended loosely on the left waist with its edge facing the ground so that you could draw it faster to cut down soldiers on the ground.<\/span><\/p>\n

Appraisal<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0This blade is appraised as a JUYO TOKEN <\/strong><\/span><\/span>(\u91cd\u8981\u5200\u5263) issued by NBTHK (Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai: \u65e5\u672c\u7f8e\u8853\u5200\u5263\u4fdd\u5b58\u5354\u4f1a). This authentication paper was only given to authentic Japanese swords, exceptionally well preserved and of high quality with artistic value. JUYO is one rank higher than Tokubetsu Hozon. To be eligible for a Juyo Token, it needs to be appraised as a Tokubetsu Hozon Token first. It is extremely rare for an antique Japanese sword to be appraised as JUYO TOKEN, and it is highly desirable among Japanese sword collectors. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Japanese swordsmiths left the black rust on the tang because it prevents red rust while the tang is in its handle. And the discoloration of the tang was created over time, and it is a great indicator for a Japanese sword specialist to estimate when the sword was forged.<\/span><\/p>\n

Habaki<\/strong><\/span>: Habaki is the equipment to make the blade not touch its scabbard inside. It prevents the blade from getting rusty and chipped.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Authentication Paper<\/strong><\/span>: NBTHK JUYO TOKEN Certificate for the blade (No. 14646)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0NBTHK<\/a><\/span><\/span>, also known as Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai (the Society for the Preservation of the Japan Art Sword), is one of the oldest Japanese sword appraising organizations in modern-day Japan. They authenticated the blade on Dec 15th in the 2th year of Reiwa (2020). They appraised it as JUYO TOKEN, the blade exceptionally worth preserving for Japanese society. The purchaser will receive this original certificate as well. Registration Number<\/span><\/strong><\/span>: Tokyo 219481<\/p>\n

\u00a0The Board of Education in Tokyo prefecture issued a registration paper for this sword. It is called Jyu Hou Token Rui Tourokusho (\u9283\u7832\u5200\u5263\u985e\u767b\u9332\u8a3c). Bunkacho (The Agency for Cultural Affairs) acknowledges a Japanese sword with this paper as a work of art.
\nThe sword needs to be traditionally hand-forged and made of Tamahagane carbon steel to be registered in the system. With this paper, its owner in Japan can legally own an authentic Japanese sword. Based on this registration number, we will apply for its export permit.
\nThis paper will need to be returned to the board of education when the sword is being shipped abroad, but you can receive a copy of it. An English translation of this registration paper is available on request.<\/span><\/p>\n
