Initially, it referred to a utensil that could be called a teapot for Sake (酒, Japanese alcohol), with a handle or spout. Today, it is often used to mean Sake or alcohol served at bars. The Choushi is the same tool as the Tokkuri (徳利). Tokkuri is a Sake bottle with a narrow neck and a bulging bottom. It is also used to pour Sake.

Both these Choushis have the same designs. Mainly, the landscape is engraved on the side of each Choushi, and Ume (梅, Japanese apricot blossom) patterns are depicted on the lids. Japanese apricot blossoms begin to bloom in winter when snow still covers its tree, so Japanese people thought this flower tells the arrival of spring. The same as cherry blossoms, this plant has been appreciated for a long time in Japan. People enjoy its adorable petal shape and scent and gracefully branched tree, and they have composed many poems about it. As it comes out in the cold season, it symbolizes the power of perseverance and vitality.

*As this item is an antique, please check each photo and ensure its condition.

【About us】
Samurai Museum is located in Tokyo, Japan, exhibiting antique artifacts related to the Samurai history.
