\u3010Description\u3011<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0This blade has the inscription of Noshu (\u6fc3\u5dde), which another name for the Mino province (today’s Gifu prerecture). Based on how it is inscribed, Hon Ami Koson (\u672c\u963f\u5f25\u5149\u905c), one of the most renowned Japanese sword appraisers in modern times gave an attribution to Noshu Kanemoto (\u6fc3\u5dde\u517c\u5143). And, NBTHK also authenticated this blade and gave an attribtuion to Magoroku Kanemoto (\u5b6b\u516d\u517c\u5143), based on its characteristic. Hon Ami Koson wrote his appraisal with Kinpun (\u91d1\u7c89), which is the mixture of gold powder and lacquer on the tang. His appraisal is also written on the Shirasaya (a plain wooden case).<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The maker’s, Kanemoto, lasted many generations in Mino province. It is said the most skilled Kanemoto of all is Kanemoto Magoroku, also known as the second-gen Kanemoto. Kanemoto Magoroku was most active during the early 16th century. His oldest remaining work was made in 1527, and the latest one was in 1538. We presume he forged blades for about 20 years. He belonged to Mino Sanami school, one of the seven schools in Seki City in Mino province (Today’s Gifu prefecture). Those seven schools are known as Seki Kaji Shichi Ryu (\u95a2\u935b\u51b6\u4e03\u6d41). Those who forged during the late Muromachi period are called Sue-Seki, and Magoroku is categorized as one of the Sue-Seki swordsmiths. Another famous figure in this category is Kanesada (\u517c\u5b9a).<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The sword maker’s name Kanemoto lasted 27th generations from the Muromachi period(Samurai period) to the Heisei period (Modern day) in Mino province (Gifu prefecture). Kanemoto was one of the most prestigious swordsmiths in this province during Samurai history.Each generation of Kanemoto forged swords in the Mino province, a renowned site for a particular sword style called MINO-DEN. They were good at creating swords with Sanbon Sugi tempering lines (Hamon in Japanese). Sanbon Sugi tempering line resembles a small cedar tree\/forest growing horizontally.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\" \"\"<\/p>\n

\u00a0MINO-DEN exceedingly prospered during Sengoku Jidai(Warring State period) due to the high demand for weapons. And the location of Mino province beat others. Akechi Mitsuhide controlled Mino province, Nobunaga Oda ruled Owari province, and Tokugawa Ieyasu was the lord of Suruga (Neighboring areas). There was high demand from those powerful feudal lords and their retainers. Furthermore, so many wars occurred between the Kanto region and the Kyoto area. Mino is located in the middle, making feudal lords feel convenient to order swords from MINO-DEN. The blades forged in MINO provinces also had the reputation of their practical design and sharpness. Many feudal lords demanded swords forged in the Mino province.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 This blade is appraised as a Hozon Token(\u4fdd\u5b58\u5200\u5263) issued by NBTHK(Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai:\u65e5\u672c\u7f8e\u8853\u5200\u5263\u4fdd\u5b58\u5354\u4f1a). This authentication paper was only given to authentic Japanese swords, well preserved with artistic value.<\/span><\/p>\n

Nakago<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aNakago is the tang of the Japanese sword. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Japanese swordsmiths left the black rust on the tang on purpose to prevent red rust while the tang is in its handle. And the discoloration of the tang was created over time, which is a great indicator for a Japanese sword specialist to estimate when the sword was forged.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Koshirae: Koshirae is the mounting of the Japanese sword. There are several parts that consist of Koshirae such as Saya(Scabbard), Tsuka( Handle), Tsuba(Handguard).<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Fuchi-Kashira<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aA pair of matching sword fittings that cover the upper and bottom parts of its sword hilt.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0This Katana\u2019s Koshirae was appraised as the Hozon Tousougu by NBTHK. According to the certificate, this Fuchi Kashira\u2019s motif is the Reishi (\u970a\u829d, Ganoderma lucidum ). In Japan, it is called the Saiwaidake (\u30b5\u30a4\u30ef\u30a4\u30c0\u30b1) or Kadodedake (\u30ab\u30c9\u30c7\u30c0\u30b1). In this way, the words \u201cSaiwai (\u5e78\u3044, good fortune)\u201d and \u201cKadode (\u9580\u51fa, new arrival)\u201d are associated with this mushroom\u2019s auspicious interpretation. It has another name: Saru-no Koshikake (\u733f\u306e\u8170\u639b, monkey seat).<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTsuka and Menuki<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aTsuka is the handle of the Japanese sword and Menuki is its decoration.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0This Menuki’s motif is the three Rinbous (\u8f2a\u5b9d, also called Rinpou). It seems golden paint was originally applied to each Menuki. Rinbous were initially a throwing weapon in ancient India. It is one of the seven treasures of Tenrin-Jouou (\u8ee2\u8f2a\u8056\u738b, same as \u8ee2\u8f2a\u738b, Cakravarti-r\u0101jan, legendary king in ancient India). Like Kongou-Sho, Rinbou was adopted to Buddhism, and people thought this tool would also work to exorcize earthly desires.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\" \"\"<\/p>\n

Tsuba and Habaki<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aTsuba is the handguard for the Japanese Sword and Habaki is the equipment to make the blade not touch its scabbard inside. It prevents the blade from getting rusty and chipped.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0The Byoubu Sukashi (\u5c4f\u98a8\u900f\u304b\u3057) is the theme of this Tsuba’s design. You could enjoy the different designs drawn on the folding screen whether you look at it from either side, the front or the backside. Some sides have landscape paintings, animals, plants, geometric patterns, or writing. Each motif has auspicious meanings. For example, you could find a mountain design on the front. We believe it is Mt. Fuji. The Japanese name of Mt. Fuji is written as \u5bcc\u58eb\u5c71 (Fuji-San). It could be said that Mt. Fuji is a symbolic existence that represents the landscape of Japan. Its motif has also been appreciated as an auspicious design since ancient times. A theory says that its Japanese name \u5bcc\u58eb was associated with \u4e0d\u6b7b (pronounced as Fushi, and means immortality); therefore, some people thought the Mt. Fuji design represents longevity. In another theory, it was also compared to another Japanese word, \u7121\u4e8b (pronounced as Buji, and means safe). In this idea, people used this motif to pray for good health and the family\u2019s safety. Samurai warriors risked their lives on battlefields. This design might have been adopted to pray for the protection of those warriors.<\/span><\/p>\n

Saya<\/strong><\/span>\uff1a Saya is the scabbard for the Japanese sword.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>

Authentication Paper<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aNBTHK\u00a0 Hozon Certificate for the blade (No. 3030158) and Hozon Tosogu for the Koshirae (No.4019703)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

NBTHK<\/span><\/a>,, also known as Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai (the Society for the Preservation of the Japan Art Sword), is one of the oldest Japanese sword appraising organizations in modern-day Japan. They authenticated the blade on Dec 14th in the 4th year of Reiwa (2022) and the sword mounting on Dec 24th in the third year of the Reiwa (2021). They appraised it as Hozon Touken, the blade and Hozon Tosogu worth preserving for Japanese society. The purchaser will receive this original certificate as well. We can also translate what is written into English and make a PDF file<\/span><\/a><\/span> for your record if you request.<\/span><\/p>\n

Registration Number : \u00a0Tokyo 325209<\/span><\/strong><\/span>
\n\u00a0The Board of Education in Tokyo prefecture issued a registration paper for this sword . It is called Jyu Token Rui Torokusho(\u9283\u5200\u5263\u985e\u767b\u9332\u8a3c). Bunkacho(The Agency for Cultural Affairs) acknowledges a Japanese sword with this paper as a work of art.
\nThe sword needs to be traditionally hand-forged and made of Tamahagane carbon steel to be registered in the system. With this paper, its owner in Japan can legally own an authentic Japanese sword. Based on this registration number, we will apply for its export permit.
\nThis paper will need to be returned to the board of education when the sword is being shipped abroad, but you can receive a copy of it. An English translation of this registration paper is available on request.<\/span><\/p>\n
