Summary<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0This blade was signed by Yamashiro Daijo Fujiwara Kunitsugu(\u5c71\u57ce\u5927\u63be\u85e4\u539f\u56fd\u6b21) during the early Edo period. It is said that Kunitsugu was the first son of Yamato Daijo Masanori. Kunitsugu belonged to Echizen Shimosaka school in Echizen province (Today\u2019s Fukui prefecture). His birth name was Yamada Hichiroheibei, and he was born in the 8th year of the Eiroku era (1565). He was especially active during 1615-1628. The maker’s name, Kunitsugu, lasted three generartions. And, we believe this blade was made by the firs-gen Kunitsugu.<\/span><\/p>\n

Yamato Daijo Masanori (His father)<\/strong><\/p>\n

It is said that Masanori was a descendant of Yamashiro koku Sanjyo Yoshinori(\u5c71\u57ce\u56fd\u4e09\u6761\u5409\u5247), one of the most famous swordsmiths during the Muromachi period\uff08Prior to Edo period).After learning the sword-forging technique from his father, Norimitsu(\u5247\u5149) in Miyatsu city, Norimitsu, he moved to Kyoto city.<\/p>\n

Masanori eventually was noticed and supported by Matsudaira Hideyasu, the third son of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Edo government. Hideysu was the feudal lord of Echizen province during the early Edo period. He then moved to Echizen province to serve the Matsudaira clan.\u00a0He became an Okakaekaji for Matsudaira Tadanao(\u677e\u5e73\u5fe0\u76f4), who was the first son of Matsudaira Hideyasu. An Okakaekaji means those who exclusively forged swords for specific Samurai or clan. It was honorable for any makers to serve this position back then. He also received an official title of Yamato Daijyo from the emperor for his excellent craftsmanship.<\/p>\n

Echizen province<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0Echizen Province was famous for forging razor-sharp, practically designed swords. The Edo government, run by the Tokugawa clan, ordered many blades from the swordsmiths in this province during the Edo period(1603-1868).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 It is appraised as a Tokubetsu Hozon Token<\/strong>(\u7279\u5225\u4fdd\u5b58\u5200\u5263) issued by NBTHK(Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai:\u65e5\u672c\u7f8e\u8853\u5200\u5263\u4fdd\u5b58\u5354\u4f1a). This authentication paper was only given to authentic Japanese swords, especially well preserved and high quality with artistic value.<\/span><\/p>\n

Nakago<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aNakago is the tang of the Japanese sword. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Japanese swordsmiths left the black rust on the tang because it prevents red rust while the tang is in its handle. And the discoloration of the tang was created over time, and it is a great indicator for a Japanese sword specialist to estimate when the sword was forged.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Koshirae:\u00a0Koshirae is the mounting of the Japanese sword. There are several parts that consist of Koshirae such as Saya(Scabbard), Tsuka(Handle), Tsuba(Handguard).<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The Fuchi Kashira, Menuki, and Tsuba, the sword mountings of this Katana\u2019s Koshirae have the same motif: Tonbo (\u873b\u86c9, dragonfly).<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Dragonflies inhabited since a long time ago in Japan. As they bag preys quickly, its heroic figure was sometimes the object of belief. During the Warring States period, the dragonfly was called the Kachimushi (\u52dd\u3061\u866b, winning insect) because of its fearless character. Dragonflies fly around fast to catch pests, moving only forward, not backward. Therefore, people thought the behaviors of this insect showed the spirit of Futaiten (\u4e0d\u9000\u8ee2); it is a state of mind or a state in which a person has some conviction and does not give in to difficulties. It is very persuasive that Samurai warriors cherished this design as an auspicious motif because of the spirit that Samurai should be prepared for the battlefields. Not only for sword mountings, dragonfly patterns were also incorporated into various items such as helmets, armor, battle coats, etcetera.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Above all, the dragonfly patterns combined with arrows and iris flowers were pleased. Allow was once one of the Samurai\u2019s primary weapons. Needless to say, it is closely related to Samurai culture. The Iris flower is called the Shoubu (\u83d6\u84b2) in Japanese, and there is the word Shoubu (\u52dd\u8ca0), which means battle. So, \u201cShoubu\u201d (\u83d6\u84b2, iris flower) and \u201cShoubu\u201d (\u52dd\u8ca0, fight) those two words have the same pronunciation; therefore, the iris flower pattern reminds Samurai battle.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Although there are minor color fading due to aging, dragonflies on this Katana\u2019s sword mountings show their beauty today. The fact that the same design has been consistently used up to this Koshirae suggests that the former owner of this Katana was conscious of the positive meanings of the dragonfly pattern.<\/span><\/p>\n

Fuchi-Kashira<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aA pair of matching sword fittings that cover the upper and bottom parts of its sword hilt.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Tsuka and Menuki<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aTsuka is the handle of the Japanese sword and Menuki is its decoration.<\/b><\/span>

Tsuba and Habaki<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aTsuba is the handguard for the Japanese Sword and Habaki is the equipment to make the blade not touch its scabbard inside. It prevents the blade from getting rusty and chipped.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>

Authentication Paper<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aNBTHK TOKUBETSU Hozon Certificate for the blade (No. 1020444)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0NBTHK<\/a><\/span><\/span>, also known as Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai (the Society for the Preservation of the Japan Art Sword), is one of the oldest Japanese sword appraising organizations in modern-day Japan. They authenticated the blade on May 31th in the 5th year of Reiwa (2023). They appraised it as Tokubetsu Hozon Touken, the blade especially worth preserving for Japanese society. The purchaser will receive this original certificate as well. Registration Number : <\/span>\u00a0Saitama 66407<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The Board of Education in Saitama prefecture issued a registration paper for this sword . It is called Jyu Token Rui Torokusho(\u9283\u5200\u5263\u985e\u767b\u9332\u8a3c). Bunkacho(The Agency for Cultural Affairs) acknowledges a Japanese sword with this paper as a work of art.
\nThe sword needs to be traditionally hand-forged and made of Tamahagane carbon steel to be registered in the system. With this paper, its owner in Japan can legally own an authentic Japanese sword. Based on this registration number, we will apply for its export permit.
\nThis paper will need to be returned to the board of education when the sword is being shipped abroad, but you can receive a copy of it. An English translation of this registration paper is available on request.<\/span><\/p>\n
