\u3010Description\u3011<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0This blade was signed by Sagami no Kami Fujiwara Hiroshige (\u76f8\u6a21\u5b88\u85e4\u539f\u5e83\u91cd),\u00a0 who was active during the early Edo period (1624-1644). He was known as the second-gen Hiroshige. The first-gen Hiroshige, his father was the fourth son of the Terushige.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Hiroshige belonged to the Bushu Shitahara school, located in today\u2019s Tokyo (Hachioji city).It is said that Yamamoto Norishige founded the school, and it thrived from the end of the Muromachi period to the late Edo period (Late 16th century to Late 19th century). One of the famous apprentice who learned from this founder was Terushige. The first-gen Hiroshige first learned sword-forging techniques from his father and founded his own branch.\u00a0 Sagami no Kami Fujiwara Hiroshige was born as the first son and his birth name was Yamamoto Fujiemon.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\" \"\"<\/p>\n

\u00a0Shitahara school is the group of swordsmiths under the Hojo clan\u2019s auspicious, powerful feudal line during the late Muromachi period. After the Toyotomi clan destroyed the Hojo clan in the Azuchi Momoyama period, Shitahara started to serve the Tokugawa clan as Okakae Kaji, swordsmiths exclusively working for a specific feudal family. Most of the Shitahara swordsmith\u2019s real sir name was Yamamoto. They especially flourished during the late Muromachi period-early Edo period.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0They kept forging for the Tokugawa clan until the end of the Edo period. Among the Bushu Shitahara group, Hiroshige was one of the most famous ones. The maker\u2019s name, Hiroshige, lasted for several generations.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 It is appraised as a Tokubetsu Hozon Token<\/strong>(\u7279\u5225\u4fdd\u5b58\u5200\u5263) issued by NBTHK(Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai:\u65e5\u672c\u7f8e\u8853\u5200\u5263\u4fdd\u5b58\u5354\u4f1a). This authentication paper was only given to authentic Japanese swords, especially well preserved and high quality with artistic value.<\/span><\/p>\n

Nakago<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aNakago is the tang of the Japanese sword. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Japanese swordsmiths left the black rust on the tang because it prevents red rust while the tang is in its handle. And the discoloration of the tang was created over time, and it is a great indicator for a Japanese sword specialist to estimate when the sword was forged.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Koshirae:\u00a0Koshirae is the mounting of the Japanese sword. There are several parts that consist of Koshirae such as Saya(Scabbard), Tsuka(Handle), Tsuba(Handguard).<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Fuchi-Kashira<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aA pair of matching sword fittings that cover the upper and bottom parts of its sword hilt.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0We assume the theme of this Fuchi Kashira is the Kassen Zu (\u5408\u6226\u56f3). You would find the figures of Samurai warriors riding their horses. So, this Fuchi Kashira depicts the scenery of a waterside battlefield. Since they wore luxurious armor and fought on horseback, we assumed they were Samurai of a certain high status. While some colorings have already faded due to aging, golden paint is applied here and there.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The Kassen Zu is also seen in the Byoubu (\u5c4f\u98a8, folding screen) works. According to a theory, Kassen Zu designed folding screens that were made after the beginning of the Edo period. Therefore, many of them did not necessarily depict reality as it was. For that reason, we often find inconsistencies in Kassen Zu Byoubu based on historical research. The Kassen Zu was more concerned with showing authority than historical accuracy, and political intentions were involved.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Tsuka and Menuki<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aTsuka is the handle of the Japanese sword and Menuki is its decoration.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0It seems this Menuki\u2019s motif is a combination of the Kiri (\u6850, paulownia) flower and the Aoi (\u8475) leaf. The Kiri pattern is generally composed of three standing straight inflorescences and three leaves. The number of blooming flowers at each inflorescence means the ranks of this design.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Since Aoi leaves have a habit of always facing the sun, and the word \u201cAoi\u201d is taken as \u201cAogu (\u4ef0\u3050, looking up)\u201d for the sun, people thought the Aoi pattern would bring good fortune. Also, this plant has a deep relationship with Samurai culture. There is a famous family crest called the Aoi-Domoe \/ Mitsuba-Aoi-no Mon (\u8475\u5df4\/\u4e09\u3064\u8449\u8475\u306e\u7d0b ). It is a plant pattern in which each stem branches and has characteristic heart-shaped leaves. Today, it is known as the family crest of the Tokugawa Shogunate family led by Tokugawa Ieyasu (\u5fb3\u5ddd \u5bb6\u5eb7, 1543-1616), a famous military commander of the Warring States period.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"\u00a0 \u00a0 \"\"<\/p>\n

Tsuba and Habaki<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aTsuba is the handguard for the Japanese Sword and Habaki is the equipment to make the blade not touch its scabbard inside. It prevents the blade from getting rusty and chipped.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0The surface of this Tsuba is decorated with the Nanako-Ji (\u9b5a\u5b50\u5730) technique. This process makes a uniform minimal protrusions pattern by hitting the Nanako-Ji Tagane (\u9b5a\u5b50\u5730\u93e8, a chisel for this technique) on a metal surface. This decorative technique is often seen on sword mountings. This Tsuba’s design has a common theme with the Fuchi Kashira mentioned above.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Now, please focus on the Habaki (\u93ba). The role of the Habaki is to securely tighten the base of the sword and support it so that the blade does not wobble and hit the scabbard. The wave pattern is engraved on this Habaki. As waves\u2019 movements continue endlessly, the wave pattern represents eternity, immortality, longevity, birth, etcetera. Also, since tides repeatedly change the shape and terrain of rocks, some people hoped for a strong will by using this motif. People used this pattern, wishing for an indomitable spirit to rechallenge time and time without giving up. The combination of battlefield scenery and waves is the same as Fuchi Kashira’s design.<\/span><\/p>\n

Saya<\/strong><\/span>\uff1a Saya is the scabbard for the Japanese sword.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>

Authentication Paper<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aNBTHK TOKUBETSU Hozon Certificate for the blade (No. 1021172)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0NBTHK<\/a><\/span><\/span>, also known as Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai (the Society for the Preservation of the Japan Art Sword), is one of the oldest Japanese sword appraising organizations in modern-day Japan. They authenticated the blade on August 25th in the 5th year of Reiwa (2023). They appraised it as Tokubetsu Hozon Touken, the blade especially worth preserving for Japanese society. The purchaser will receive this original certificate as well. We can also translate what is written into English and make a PDF file<\/span><\/a><\/span> for your record if you request.<\/span><\/p>\n

Registration Number : <\/span>\u00a0Gunma 20743<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The Board of Education in Gunma prefecture issued a registration paper for this sword . It is called Jyu Token Rui Torokusho(\u9283\u5200\u5263\u985e\u767b\u9332\u8a3c). Bunkacho(The Agency for Cultural Affairs) acknowledges a Japanese sword with this paper as a work of art.
\nThe sword needs to be traditionally hand-forged and made of Tamahagane carbon steel to be registered in the system. With this paper, its owner in Japan can legally own an authentic Japanese sword. Based on this registration number, we will apply for its export permit.
\nThis paper will need to be returned to the board of education when the sword is being shipped abroad, but you can receive a copy of it. An English translation of this registration paper is available on request.<\/span><\/p>\n
