It is a kind of container for Matcha (抹茶, powdered green tea). In tea ceremonies, there are two main types of Matcha containers. One is called the Chaire, a tool for advanced users, basically used for storing strong tea. The Chaire is usually pottery. On the other hand, the Natsume (棗) is a container for thin tea and is basically made of wood and lacquered. However, there are also pottery Natsume and Natsumes made from bamboo or Japanese paper with lacquer.

This Chaire is categorized as an Oribe Yaki (織部焼, Oribe ware). Oribe ware is a type of pottery that was fired mainly in the Mino (美濃, the South part of today’s Gifu prefecture and a part of Aichi prefecture) region during the Momoyama period (桃山時代, 1568-1600). Oribe ware is characterized by its novelty. The intentionally distorted shape and bold patterns, such as checkered patterns and geometrical patterns, were very different from the orderly tea utensils of the past. You could see such geometaric patterns on this Chaire. Although Oribe ware is mass-produced, no two pieces have the same design. From this point, Oribe ware was created with an emphasis on individuality.

It is said that this pottery style was started by Furuta Oribe (古田 織部, 1543-1615), a military commander and tea master who was a disciple of Sen no Rikyu (千利休). A theory says that Furuta Oribe began producing Oribe ware after being inspired by the bright green pottery called the Kōchi Yaki/Kanan Sansai (交趾焼/華南三彩), which was introduced through the Nanban trade. However, Oribe ware declined after the founder, Furuta Oribe, committed Seppuku (切腹, cutting belly) in 1615 after being suspected of secretly communicating with the Toyotomi clan. During the Kanei era (寛永年間, 1624-1645), there was a revival of classic celadon porcelain, and Oribe ware disappeared.

There are many types of Oribe ware, and the characteristic of Kuro Oribe (黒織部) is that it has a black glaze instead of a copper-green glaze. Then, iron painting is applied to the margins. We hope you enjoy its deliberately distorted shapes and bold patterns.

*As this item is an antique, please check each photo and ensure its condition.

【About us】
Samurai Museum is located in Tokyo, Japan, exhibiting antique artifacts related to the Samurai history.
