Antique Japanese Sword Wakizashi attributed to Fuyuhiro with NBTHK<\/span> Hozon<\/span> Certificate\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u3010Description\u3011<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

This blade is attributed to Fuyuhiro (\u51ac\u5ee3)\u00a0 during the late Muromachi period.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>It is said that the first generation Fuyuhiro was the son of the second-gen Soshu Hirotsugu. The second-gen Soshu Hirotsugu was one of the most well-known swordsmiths in the Soshu region(today’s Kanagawa prefecture). The first-gen Fuyuhiro moved to Wakasa province(today’s Fukui prefecture) after learning sword forging techniques\/tradition from his master (Approx. 1460: mid-Muromachi period). Firstly, he focused on forging swords with the Soshu Den tradition, one of the five well-established sword-forging traditions (Gokaden). However, he gradually mixed it with Bizen tradition, another tradition of the five.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0According to historical documents, the swordsmith’s name Fuyuhiro lasted 17 generations from the Muromachi period(1460-)to the end of the Edo period(-1868).\u00a0 We believe the attribution was given to the first-gen Fuyuhiro.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0During the Sengoku period(Warring state period), the generations of Fuyuhiro forged swords for high-class Samurai or feudal lords because of the popularity and the high demand for weapons. There are records of the swordsmith name Fuhiro forging in Bizen, Bingo, Izumo, and Hoki province in the Edo period.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

You can see interesting Kissaki (tip of the blade) called Shobu Zukuri (\u83d6\u84b2\u9020\u308a). There is no Yokote on this blade. Yokote is the borderline between the tip and cutting edge. We are confident you will appreciate the elegant look of this blade.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0This blade is appraised as a Hozon Token(\u4fdd\u5b58\u5200\u5263) issued by NBTHK(Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai:\u65e5\u672c\u7f8e\u8853\u5200\u5263\u4fdd\u5b58\u5354\u4f1a). This authentication paper was only given to authentic Japanese swords, well preserved with artistic value.<\/span><\/p>\n

Nakago<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aNakago is the tang of the Japanese sword. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Japanese swordsmiths left the black rust on the tang on purpose to prevent red rust while the tang is in its handle. And the discoloration of the tang was created over time, which is a great indicator for a Japanese sword specialist to estimate when the sword was forged.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Koshirae: Koshirae is the mounting of the Japanese sword. There are several parts that consist of Koshirae such as Saya(Scabbard), Tsuka( Handle), Tsuba(Handguard).<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Fuchi-Kashira<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aA pair of matching sword fittings that cover the upper and bottom parts of its sword hilt.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0The Kashira part has a simple appearance. On the other hand, waves are engraved on the Fuchi part, and it depicts a waterside landscape. You could also find things that seem to be seashells and stones. This Fuchi part is decorated with gorgeous colors such as gold, silver, and copper.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"
\nTsuka and Menuki<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aTsuka is the handle of the Japanese sword and Menuki is its decoration.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The upper side Menuki’s motifs are probably wild geese. And lower side Menuki’s motif is a kind of plant. There is a classical theme called the Ryusui Ashi Kari Mon (\u6d41\u6c34\u8466\u96c1\u6587). This pattern is composed of a combination of reeds and wild geese, which represent autumnal features. In Japanese, reeds are called the Ashi (\u8466), and wild goose is called the Kari (\u96c1). Assuming that this design was incorporated into this work, the plants designed here would be reeds. In addition, another sword mounting we mentioned earlier (Fuchi Kashira) had a wave pattern (running water) designed on it. In other words, when we look at the entire of this handle, it makes the Ryusui Ashi Kari Mon.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\" \"\"<\/p>\n

Tsuba and Habaki<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aTsuba is the handguard for the Japanese Sword and Habaki is the equipment to make the blade not touch its scabbard inside. It prevents the blade from getting rusty and chipped.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0It seems this Tsuba is made from copper. And its Mimi (\u8033, edge) part is framed with a golden plate, adding beauty to this work. In addition, it has practicality, such as preventing the wear of the edge part. Also, it prevents wear and tear on the Kimono if the edge damages it by touching the cloth.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Kozuka<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aKozuka is a small knife stored in Kozuka Hitsu(groove of the sheath of the Japanese sword).<\/b><\/p>\n

\u00a0A Kogatana (\u5c0f\u5200, small knife) is stored in the Kozuka. The principal motif of this Kozuka’s design is the Makimono (\u5dfb\u7269, scroll). Scrolls are symbols of scriptures, doctrines, teachings, and wisdom, and are symbols of wisdom accumulated since ancient times and its inheritance. In Japan, there is a classical design called the Takaradukushi (\u5b9d\u5c3d\u304f\u3057) pattern. It is a combination of treasures, and one of the elements of this theme is a scroll. Scrolls give us much information; therefore, this motif symbolizes knowledge and wisdom. In this way, it has been considered as auspicious motif for long time.<\/span><\/p>\n

Kougai<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aKougai is the equipment for Samurai to arrange or fix his hair style.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0This item is an antique Kougai (\u7b04), which was used to arrange or fix the hairstyle of Samurai. A Kougai is usually stored in the Kougai Hitsu. And a Kozuka (\u5c0f\u67c4) is often stored at the other side of the scabbard. <\/span>This Kougai’s design is similar to the Kozuka we have just focused on above. Although the motif is different, we feel the similarity between these sword mountings.<\/span><\/p>\n

Saya<\/strong><\/span>\uff1a Saya is the scabbard for the Japanese sword.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>

Authentication Paper<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aNBTHK\u00a0 Hozon Certificate for the blade (No. 375084)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

NBTHK<\/span><\/a>,, also known as Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai (the Society for the Preservation of the Japan Art Sword), is one of the oldest Japanese sword appraising organizations in modern-day Japan. They authenticated the blade on March 10th in the 18th year of Heisei (2006). They appraised it as Hozon Touken, the blade worth preserving for Japanese society. The purchaser will receive this original certificate as well. We can also translate what is written into English and make a PDF file<\/span><\/a><\/span> for your record if you request.<\/span><\/p>\n

Registration Number : \u00a0Hiroshima 60126<\/span><\/strong><\/span>
\n\u00a0The Board of Education in Hiroshima prefecture issued a registration paper for this sword . It is called Jyu Token Rui Torokusho(\u9283\u5200\u5263\u985e\u767b\u9332\u8a3c). Bunkacho(The Agency for Cultural Affairs) acknowledges a Japanese sword with this paper as a work of art.
\nThe sword needs to be traditionally hand-forged and made of Tamahagane carbon steel to be registered in the system. With this paper, its owner in Japan can legally own an authentic Japanese sword. Based on this registration number, we will apply for its export permit.
\nThis paper will need to be returned to the board of education when the sword is being shipped abroad, but you can receive a copy of it. An English translation of this registration paper is available on request.<\/span><\/p>\n
