Title: Kogou to Nakakuni Zu Tsuba<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Description<\/strong><\/span>
\n\u00a0This Tsuba is recognized by The Society for Preservation of Japanese Art Swords, which is known as NBTHK. If you focus on the center part of this Tsuba, you would find a Mei (\u9298, engraved inscription). It is written as \u6b63\u4fe1 (Masanobu), and his Kaoh (\u82b1\u62bc, his stylized signature). The engraving lines on the Mei and the Kaoh are clear, and they are still in good condition even after a long period.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The theme of this Tsuba’s design was quoted from one of the Noh (\u80fd, a Japanese song and dance performed on a particular Noh stage using masks and beautiful costumes). performances called the Kog\u014d (\u5c0f\u7763). The synopsis of this story is as follows. During the Heian period, when the Heike (\u5e73\u5bb6) family was in power, Kog\u014d no Tsubone was favored by the emperor of the time. The Kog\u014d hid herself because she feared the power of the Taira-no Kiyomori (\u5e73 \u6e05\u76db), who was the father of the emperor’s wife. The emperor mourned deeply every morning and evening and was concerned about the Kog\u014d’s whereabouts. The emperor ordered his vassal, Minamoto-no Nakakuni (\u6e90 \u4ef2\u56fd), to search for Kog\u014d. Nakakuni once often played the flute to the tune of her music in the imperial court and could distinguish the tones of her playing. Eventually, Nakakuni finally found her based on the sound of the Koto (\u7434, one of the stringed instruments of Japanese music). Although he was refused at first, he desperately asked and was finally able to meet her. Kog\u014d expressed her gratitude to the emperor for coming so far to look for her and gave Nakakuni a letter to him. She held a drinking party for Nakakuni, and he performed a dance. Eventually, the party ended, and Nakakuni returned to the capital on horseback while the Kog\u014d saw him off. This is a story about a loyal retainer of the emperor who mediates the love between a nobleman and the woman he loves. The main character is Minamoto-no Nakakuni, who plays the role of mediator. He plays the role of supporting the tragic love colored by the nobleman’s elegant emotions behind the scenes and making it shine beautifully. For the emperor and Kog\u014d, Nakakuni seems to be more than just a mediator of words. He links the hearts and feelings of two people who cannot meet.<\/span><\/p>\n

What is Tsuba?<\/strong><\/span>
