\u3010Description\u3011<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0This blade was signed\u00a0 by Naminohira Yasuchika(\u6ce2\u5e73\u5b89\u5ee3), who was active during Kyoho era(1716-1736: Mid- Edo period). He belonged to a prestigious school called Naminohira school<\/span>. Naminohira is also a place located in the Satsuma domain(today\u2019s Kagoshima prefecture). Yasuhiro was the son of Yasumasa (\u5b89\u6b63), who was also the prominent figure in Naminohira school. Yasuhiro originally signed Yasutomi (\u5b89\u5bcc) in his early career.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Naminohira(\u6ce2\u5e73) was one of the most influential schools in Satsuma domain founded by a Yamato-Den swordsmith Masakuni(\u6b63\u570b) during the late-Heian period(Late 12th century). They were known for having their smith name with one of these letters, \u884c(Yuki) or \u5b89(Yasu).<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The Naminohira swords were cherished among Samurais in the marine army, mainly because the name Naminohira(\u6ce2\u5e73) means \u201cTides are quiet.\u201d in Japanese.<\/span>
\nThe origin of the name Naminohira dates back to the school\u2019s foundation. It is said that the founder Masakuni was able to calm the waves by dedicating his sword to the sea when his school from Yamato sailed to live in Satsuma domain. Since then, he began to use the title \u201cNaminohira Yukiyasu (\u6ce2\u5e73\u884c\u5b89)\u201d \u2013 \u201cTides are quiet, \u2019tis an easy way.\u201d From the late-Heian period until the end of Samurai times(Late 19th century), the Naminohira school had kept the mastership for a thousand years.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Yasuhiro was a swordsmith from the Naminohira school back in the mid-Edo period. He would like to apply the authentic Yamato-Den techniques in his craft. His work appears to have features that derive from Yamato-Den; razor-edge sharpness and exceptional strength.<\/span>
\nSatsuma province had many Samurais and smiths back in the day, making it difficult for most smiths to keep their jobs through the era. However, the Naminohira school always remained prominent in the evolving sword industry \u2013 and their work is still beloved by Katana fans to date.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 It is appraised as a Tokubetsu Hozon Token<\/strong>(\u7279\u5225\u4fdd\u5b58\u5200\u5263) issued by NBTHK(Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai:\u65e5\u672c\u7f8e\u8853\u5200\u5263\u4fdd\u5b58\u5354\u4f1a). This authentication paper was only given to authentic Japanese swords, especially well preserved and high quality with artistic value.<\/span><\/p>\n

Nakago<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aNakago is the tang of the Japanese sword. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Japanese swordsmiths left the black rust on the tang because it prevents red rust while the tang is in its handle. And the discoloration of the tang was created over time, and it is a great indicator for a Japanese sword specialist to estimate when the sword was forged.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Koshirae:\u00a0Koshirae is the mounting of the Japanese sword. There are several parts that consist of Koshirae such as Saya(Scabbard), Tsuka(Handle), Tsuba(Handguard).<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Fuchi-Kashira<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aA pair of matching sword fittings that cover the upper and bottom parts of its sword hilt.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0This Fuchi Kashira has a plain design. On the surface, there are areas where the metal has changed in texture over time and areas where it has peeled off. Instead of ornamental decoration such as gold or silver inlays, you could directly see such changes due to aging. We hope you would enjoy them as antique textures.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTsuka and Menuki<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aTsuka is the handle of the Japanese sword and Menuki is its decoration.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0You would find a figure of the Saru (\u733f, monkey) on each side of the handle. The upper Menuki\u2019s monkey is running, and he (or she) holds something in his (or her) hand. Another monkey is wearing a golden cloth and brings the Kagura Suzu (\u795e\u697d\u9234). We could also find a child monkey sitting around this monkey. Generally speaking, as we know, monkeys belong to the same primates as us humans. So it is considered to be the closest animal to humans. Probably, it is why monkeys have often been personified in pictures and stories since ancient times. In this Menuki as well, the figures of monkeys are portrayed with the same gestures as humans. The Kagura Suzu is a bell used when dancing Kagura (\u795e\u697d, sacred Shito dance). Its handle is made by connecting several small bells. It is a tool used by Shinto priests and maidens during Shinto rituals to call the gods or pray to drive out evil spirits. Such a religious idea might have inspired this Menuki’s design.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTsuba and Habaki<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aTsuba is the handguard for the Japanese Sword and Habaki is the equipment to make the blade not touch its scabbard inside. It prevents the blade from getting rusty and chipped.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0Two circle-shaped objects and a tool that seems to be a Biwa (\u7435\u7436, pipa) are engraved on this Tsuba. There is no gold or silver coloring, and the shapes of these motifs are carved out using thin line carvings. Regarding the object described as resembling a pipa, since it also looks like a sword, there are various possibilities depending on the person looking at it.<\/span><\/p>\n

Saya<\/strong><\/span>\uff1a Saya is the scabbard for the Japanese sword.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>

Authentication Paper<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aNBTHK TOKUBETSU Hozon Certificate for the blade (No. 1017569)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0NBTHK<\/a><\/span><\/span>, also known as Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai (the Society for the Preservation of the Japan Art Sword), is one of the oldest Japanese sword appraising organizations in modern-day Japan. They authenticated the blade on March 2nd in the 4th year of Reiwa (2022). They appraised it as Tokubetsu Hozon Touken, the blade especially worth preserving for Japanese society. The purchaser will receive this original certificate as well. We can also translate what is written into English and make a PDF file<\/span><\/a><\/span> for your record if you request.<\/span><\/p>\n

Registration Number : <\/span>Shizuoka 39302<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The Board of Education in Shizuoka prefecture issued a registration paper for this sword . It is called Jyu Token Rui Torokusho(\u9283\u5200\u5263\u985e\u767b\u9332\u8a3c). Bunkacho(The Agency for Cultural Affairs) acknowledges a Japanese sword with this paper as a work of art.
\nThe sword needs to be traditionally hand-forged and made of Tamahagane carbon steel to be registered in the system. With this paper, its owner in Japan can legally own an authentic Japanese sword. Based on this registration number, we will apply for its export permit.
\nThis paper will need to be returned to the board of education when the sword is being shipped abroad, but you can receive a copy of it. An English translation of this registration paper is available on request.<\/span><\/p>\n
