\u3010Description\u3011<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0This blade is attributed to Sekishu Dewa Sadatsuna (\u77f3\u5dde\u51fa\u7fbd\u8c9e\u7db1), who was active during the Bunna-Koo era (1352-1390: mid-late Nanbokucho period). The maker\u2019s Sadatsuna lasted three generations and we believe NBTHK\u2019s attribution was given to the first generation. Sekishu is the province located in today\u2019s Shimane prefecture. And Dewa is the name of the village.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Sadatsuna was the son of the first-gen Naotsuna, one of the ten apprentices of Masamune. Masamune is one of the most famous swordsmiths in Japanese history. Those ten apprentices are called Masamune Jittesu (\u6b63\u5b97\u5341\u54f2).<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The first-gen Naotsuna, his father originally resided in Sagami province (today\u2019s Kanagawa prefecture) to master OSHU DEN tradition from Masamune. Then, Naotsuna moved to Sekishu (Today\u2019s Shimane prefecture). The maker\u2019s name Naotsuna also lasted four generations.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0When Sadatsuna was active in the Nanbokucho period, Japan was tumultuous because the imperial court was split into two sides(south and north). There were many conflicts, and many Samurai were deployed. And Sadatsuna must have dedicated himself to forging high-quality blades for those Samurai who fought in battles.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Sekishu is also known as Iwami koku and it was famous for producing the high-quality carbon steel for the Japanese sword. We presume Sadatsuna had easy access to this exceptionally great carbon steel to create his swords.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0This blade is appraised as a Hozon Touken <\/strong>(\u4fdd\u5b58\u5200\u5263) issued by NBTHK (Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai: \u65e5\u672c\u7f8e\u8853\u5200\u5263\u4fdd\u5b58\u5354\u4f1a). This authentication paper was only given to authentic Japanese swords, well preserved and high quality with artistic value.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Nakago<\/strong><\/span>: Nakago is the tang of the Japanese sword.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0Japanese swordsmiths left the black rust on the tang because it prevents red rust while the tang is in its handle. And the discoloration of the tang was created over time, and it is a great indicator for a Japanese sword specialist to estimate when the sword was forged.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Koshirae<\/strong>:<\/span> Koshirae is the mounting of the Japanese sword. There are several parts that consist of Koshirae such as Saya (Scabbard), Tsuka (Handle), Tsuba (Handguard).<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Fuchi-Kashira<\/strong>: A pair of matching sword fittings that cover the upper and bottom parts of its sword hilt.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The motifs of this Fuchi Kashiras are Hannya-no Men\/Hannya (\u822c\u82e5\u9762\/\u822c\u82e5). It is a kind of Noh (\u80fd, a form of Japanese drama performed in masks and costumes) and is a mask of a vengeful spirit that expresses a woman’s jealousy and resentment. Therefore, a Hannya is a mask of a Kijo (\u9b3c\u5973, a monster that turned a human woman into a demon, a female demon). There are two long horns painted with gold on its forehead. On the top of the head, like other female masks such as Ko-Omote (\u5c0f\u9762), the hair is drawn on the left and right, but in the case of Hannya, the hair is disheveled to express a ferocious look. Artificial eyebrows (eyebrows drawn with eyebrow ink above the original eyebrows) are drawn on the forehead. The eyes beneath the furrowed eyebrows are golden, with a hole only for the pupil. The mouth opens wide, revealing upper and lower teeth fitted with metal fittings and two pairs of fangs. The characteristic feature of the Hannya mask is that the upper half has a sad expression with frowning eyebrows, while the lower half has a wide-open mouth expressing fierce anger. This kind of design is said to represent the dual nature of the demon woman’s heart, which is filled with anger and sadness.<\/span>
\n\"\"
\nTsuka and Menuki<\/strong>: Tsuka is the handle of the Japanese sword and Menuki is its decoration.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The theme of this Menuki\u2019s design is the Takaradukushi Zu (\u5b9d\u5c3d\u304f\u3057\u56f3). It is a combination of treasures; you would find various motifs on each Menuki. Some people believed these treasures would bring good fortune. Each item has a meaning; for example, what you would find on your left is probably a Kakure-Gasa (\u96a0\u308c\u7b20, hat that hides face) and a Kakure-Mino (\u96a0\u308c\u84d1, straw raincoat). In addition, you could see the mallet on the right. This is the Uchide-no-Koduchi (\u6253\u3061\u51fa\u306e\u5c0f\u69cc, mallet of good luck).<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The Kakure-Mino (\u96a0\u308c\u84d1, straw raincoat) and the Kakure-Gasa (\u96a0\u308c\u7b20, hat that hides face) would protect us from danger or illness. The Uchide-no-Koduchi (\u6253\u3061\u51fa\u306e\u5c0f\u69cc, mallet of good luck) would fulfill one\u2019s wish or defeat one\u2019s enemy. It is well-known that the Daikokuten (\u5927\u9ed2\u5929, god of wealth), who is a member of the Shichifukujin (\u4e03\u798f\u795e, the Seven Gods of Good Fortune), brings this mallet. In this way, this Menuki\u2019s motifs are good luck items.<\/span>
\n\"\" \"\"<\/p>\n

Tsuba and Habaki<\/strong>: Tsuba is the handguard for the Japanese Sword and Habaki is the equipment to make the blade not touch its scabbard inside. It prevents the blade from getting rusty and chipped.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Although its design is relatively simple, this Tsuba is characterized by large openwork carvings. Instead of gorgeous decorations such as gold and silver inlays, you could directly enjoy the texture and color of the iron material.<\/span>

Saya<\/strong>: <\/span>Saya is the scabbard for the Japanese sword.\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Authentication Paper<\/strong>: <\/span>NBTHK Hozon Certificate for the blade (No.3030062)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0NBTHK<\/span><\/a>, also known as Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai (the Society for the Preservation of the Japan Art Sword), is one of the oldest Japanese sword appraising organizations in modern-day Japan. They authenticated the blade on Dec 14th in the 4th year of Reiwa (2022). They appraised it as Hozon Touken, the blade worth preserving for Japanese society. The purchaser will receive this original certificate as well. We can also translate what is written into English and make a PDF file<\/span><\/a> for your record if you request.<\/span><\/p>\n

Registration Number<\/span><\/strong>: Kanagawa 45220<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The Board of Education in Kanagawa prefecture issued a registration paper for this sword. It is called Jyu Token Rui Torokusho (\u9283\u5200\u5263\u985e\u767b\u9332\u8a3c). Bunkacho (The Agency for Cultural Affairs) acknowledges a Japanese sword with this paper as a work of art.
\n\u00a0The sword needs to be traditionally hand-forged and made of Tamahagane carbon steel to be registered in the system. With this paper, its owner in Japan can legally own an authentic Japanese sword. Based on this registration number, we will apply for its export permit.
\n\u00a0This paper will need to be returned to the board of education when the sword is being shipped abroad, but you can receive a copy of it. An English translation of this registration paper is available on request.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
