Antique Japanese Sword Katana attributed to Fujishima with NBTHK Hozon<\/span> Certificate<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u3010Description\u3011<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

This blade is attributed to Fujishima (\u85e4\u5cf6), which is a prestigious school, especially flourishing during the Muromachi period (late 14th- late 16th century) in Kaga province (Today’s Ishikawa prefecture). The school was founded by the first-gen Fujishima Tomoshige during the early Nanbokucho period. This maker’s name lasted several generations, from the early Nanboku period to the end of the Edo period (Early 14th-Late 19th century).<\/p>\n

It is said that the first-gen Tomoshige was an apprentice of Rai Kunitoshi, one of the most famous swordsmiths in Yamashiro province (Today’s Kyoto) during the late Kamakura-early Nanbokucho period. The first-gen Tomoshige originally lived in Fushima village in Echizen province (today’s Fukui prefecture). And later on, he moved to Kaga domain and founded the school.<\/p>\n

When this blade was forged, there were many rivalries and wars between regional feudal lords to expand their land or gain political control. This time is called Sengoku Jidai. It has Hi (groove). It would be nice to own a Katana that is from this warring state period.<\/p>\n

The groove called HI (\u6a0b) adds a gorgeous appearance to the blade. It comes with a modern Koshirae because the previous owner used this for his Iaido practice. Considering that, this blade must have been also practical when this blade was originally made back in the Muromachi period.<\/p>\n

\u00a0This blade is appraised as a Hozon Touken <\/strong>(\u4fdd\u5b58\u5200\u5263) issued by NBTHK (Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai: \u65e5\u672c\u7f8e\u8853\u5200\u5263\u4fdd\u5b58\u5354\u4f1a). This authentication paper was only given to authentic Japanese swords, well preserved and high quality with artistic value.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Nakago<\/strong><\/span>: Nakago is the tang of the Japanese sword.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0Japanese swordsmiths left the black rust on the tang because it prevents red rust while the tang is in its handle. And the discoloration of the tang was created over time, and it is a great indicator for a Japanese sword specialist to estimate when the sword was forged.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Koshirae<\/strong>:<\/span> Koshirae is the mounting of the Japanese sword. There are several parts that consist of Koshirae such as Saya (Scabbard), Tsuka (Handle), Tsuba (Handguard).<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Fuchi-Kashira<\/strong>: A pair of matching sword fittings that cover the upper and bottom parts of its sword hilt.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0This Fuchi Kashira’s design is a combination of the Kiku (\u83ca, chrysanthemum) and Karakusa (\u5510\u8349, arabesque) patterns. These plants are both auspicious motifs.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0A long time ago, the chrysanthemum was used as a medicine for obtaining a long life in the continent, and it was brought to Japan with this thought in the Nara period (648-781). The chrysanthemum symbolizes fall, and people have greatly appreciated it since ancient times. The chrysanthemum has been likened to the sun as its petals form radially. That is why this flower pattern is treated as the symbol of perpetual youth and longevity or good health. The Karakusa pattern is a design in which the stems and leaves of vines are twined and make curves. Since ivy has a strong vitality and grows up without interruption, people regarded this design as a symbol of prosperity and longevity.<\/span>
\n\"\"
\nTsuka and Menuki<\/strong>: Tsuka is the handle of the Japanese sword and Menuki is its decoration.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0You would find the figure of a dragon through the gaps of the Tsukamaki thread. Initially, the dragon was an imaginary creature found in ancient foreign traditions or myths. Furthermore, it is regarded as a symbolic beast of auspicious signs. Its body is likened to nine animals: antlers are deer, the head is a camel, eyes are demons, the neck is a snake, the belly is the Mizuchi (\u86df, a mythical animal in Japan that looks like a snake and has a horn and four legs), scales are fish, claws are falcons, palms are tigers and ears are cows. It was thought that the dragon would reign at the top of all animals because of its odd-looking appearance.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0If you focus on the upper side dragon\u2019s hand, you will find that this dragon brings a ball-shaped object in its hand. It is the Nyoi Houju (\u5982\u610f\u5b9d\u73e0, Cint\u0101ma\u1e47i), a fantasy jewel that fulfills any desire and gives out treasure, clothes, food, and drinks. Moreover, it heals illness and suffering, removes evils, purifies muddy water, and prevents disasters. It is said this magical item is taken from the brain of the dragon king.<\/span>
\n\"\" \"\"<\/p>\n

Tsuba and Habaki<\/strong>: Tsuba is the handguard for the Japanese Sword and Habaki is the equipment to make the blade not touch its scabbard inside. It prevents the blade from getting rusty and chipped.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0This Tsuba depicts a scenery of a battlefield. We would categorize it as the Kassen Zu (\u5408\u6226\u56f3). Many Samurai warriors are depicted on this Tsuba. It seems two Samurai warriors are the principal characters. They are wearing gorgeous armor, and golden paint is applied to them. They ride on horseback and try to cut each other with their swords. The depiction is so realistic that we could almost hear the horse’s footsteps and sword swings. It is a subject suitable for sword mountings, expressing the bravery of Samurai.<\/span>

Authentication Paper<\/strong>: <\/span>NBTHK Hozon Certificate for the blade (No.3011472)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0NBTHK<\/span><\/a>, also known as Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai (the Society for the Preservation of the Japan Art Sword), is one of the oldest Japanese sword appraising organizations in modern-day Japan. They authenticated the blade on March 23th in the 28th year of Heisei (2016). They appraised it as Hozon Touken, the blade worth preserving for Japanese society. The purchaser will receive this original certificate as well. We can also translate what is written into English and make a PDF file<\/span><\/a> for your record if you request.<\/span><\/p>\n

Registration Number<\/span><\/strong>: Tokyo 296253<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The Board of Education in Tokyo prefecture issued a registration paper for this sword. It is called Jyu Token Rui Torokusho (\u9283\u5200\u5263\u985e\u767b\u9332\u8a3c). Bunkacho (The Agency for Cultural Affairs) acknowledges a Japanese sword with this paper as a work of art.
\n\u00a0The sword needs to be traditionally hand-forged and made of Tamahagane carbon steel to be registered in the system. With this paper, its owner in Japan can legally own an authentic Japanese sword. Based on this registration number, we will apply for its export permit.
\n\u00a0This paper will need to be returned to the board of education when the sword is being shipped abroad, but you can receive a copy of it. An English translation of this registration paper is available on request.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
