\u3010Description\u3011<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0This blade was signed by Tanabe Kai Saburo Hidenao (\u7530\u8fba\u9b41\u4e09\u90ce\u79c0\u76f4) in the third year of the Meiji era (1870). He was an apprentice of Aizu Shigefusa (\u4f1a\u6d25\u91cd\u623f). Hidenao resided in Echigo province (Today’s Niigata prefecture) and was active during the end of the Edo period to the early Meiji period (Late 19th century). His teacher, Aizu Shifusa was an apprentice of Tenryuji Masataka, one of the most famous swordsmiths at the end of the Edo period.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0When Hidenao started his career, it was the end of the Edo period when the military government of Samurai(Tokugawa Shogunate) controlled Japan, and feudal society was the norm. There was plenty of demand of weapons from Samurais back then. However, in 1868, there was a civil war between Tokugawa\u2019s shogunate government and the new Meiji imperial government. After this battle, the Tokugawa shogunate was ousted, and the imperial government gained control. The whole feudal system was dismantled, and the new government took the social status of Samurai. The demand for Japanese swords decreased dramatically from the beginning of the Meiji era. Many swordsmiths lost their jobs or changed their career. However, Hidenao kept forging swords to keep the tradition alive.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 It is appraised as a Tokubetsu Hozon Token<\/strong>(\u7279\u5225\u4fdd\u5b58\u5200\u5263) issued by NBTHK(Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai:\u65e5\u672c\u7f8e\u8853\u5200\u5263\u4fdd\u5b58\u5354\u4f1a). This authentication paper was only given to authentic Japanese swords, especially well preserved and high quality with artistic value.<\/span><\/p>\n

Nakago<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aNakago is the tang of the Japanese sword. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Japanese swordsmiths left the black rust on the tang because it prevents red rust while the tang is in its handle. And the discoloration of the tang was created over time, and it is a great indicator for a Japanese sword specialist to estimate when the sword was forged.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Koshirae:\u00a0Koshirae is the mounting of the Japanese sword. There are several parts that consist of Koshirae such as Saya(Scabbard), Tsuka(Handle), Tsuba(Handguard).<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Fuchi-Kashira<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aA pair of matching sword fittings that cover the upper and bottom parts of its sword hilt.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0While this Fuchi Kashira is decorated with a simple pattern, it has a luxurious look due to gilding. The same coloring is used for the Kojiri (\u943a, the metal fitting that protects the tip of a scabbard). There is a technique used to decorate metal works such as sword mountings; Shigure Yasuri (\u6642\u96e8\u9462). It is a file that is cut diagonally and intermittently, like a drizzle in a Japanese painting. Lines are carved steeply, and these lines are likened to rain. We estimate such a decorative technique was possibly used for this Fuchi Kashira.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Tsuka and Menuki<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aTsuka is the handle of the Japanese sword and Menuki is its decoration.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0This Menuki’s motif is a combination of several plants. Although we cannot see all the details of each Menuki, we could find the shapes of flowers and leaves. The same as the Fuchi Kashira, this Menuki is also colored with golden paint.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0One of the plant motifs of this Menuki is Momiji (\u7d05\u8449, maple). According to a theory, this plant motif represents longevity. Maple leaves change their colors from green to yellow, orange, or red. The fall foliage is one of the charms of autumn. Due to this behavior of the color, this design represents someone who knows how to get along in the world and be happy.<\/span>
\n\"\"\u00a0 \u00a0 \"\"<\/p>\n

Tsuba and Habaki<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aTsuba is the handguard for the Japanese Sword and Habaki is the equipment to make the blade not touch its scabbard inside. It prevents the blade from getting rusty and chipped.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0This Tsuba has Yotsu-Mokkou (\u56db\u30c4\u6728\u74dc) shape. There are various types of Mokkou (\u6728\u74dc) shape Tsubas, and this Yotsu-Mokkou figure is very popular, as seen in this work. In addition, the surface of this Tsuba is decorated with gold plating. Its bright color adds decorativeness to this work.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Mokkou patterns have been incorporated into not only the shape of metalworks but also family crests. For example, the Mokkou Mon (\u6728\u74dc\u7d0b) is a design that has been depicted on a Mokou (\u5e3d\u984d, cloths for decorating the hanging edge of the curtain and blinds). According to a theory, the Mokkou was named after the name of this silk cloth made of silk, \u201c\u5e3d\u984d (Mokou).\u201d Another view says that it was modeled after the cut end of a Boke (\u6728\u74dc), which is a plant of the rose family. The Mokkou pattern is one of the five major family crests used in many houses. As a design to pray for the prosperity of descendants, it is speculated that many people favored its good omen.<\/span><\/p>\n

Saya<\/strong><\/span>\uff1a Saya is the scabbard for the Japanese sword.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>

Authentication Paper<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aNBTHK TOKUBETSU Hozon Certificate for the blade (No. 1016786)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0NBTHK<\/a><\/span><\/span>, also known as Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai (the Society for the Preservation of the Japan Art Sword), is one of the oldest Japanese sword appraising organizations in modern-day Japan. They authenticated the blade on December 3rd in the 3rd year of Reiwa (2021). They appraised it as Tokubetsu Hozon Touken, the blade especially worth preserving for Japanese society. The purchaser will receive this original certificate as well. We can also translate what is written into English and make a PDF file<\/span><\/a><\/span> for your record if you request.<\/span><\/p>\n

Registration Number : <\/span>\u00a0Nagasaki 14122<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The Board of Education in Nagasaki prefecture issued a registration paper for this sword . It is called Jyu Token Rui Torokusho(\u9283\u5200\u5263\u985e\u767b\u9332\u8a3c). Bunkacho(The Agency for Cultural Affairs) acknowledges a Japanese sword with this paper as a work of art.
\nThe sword needs to be traditionally hand-forged and made of Tamahagane carbon steel to be registered in the system. With this paper, its owner in Japan can legally own an authentic Japanese sword. Based on this registration number, we will apply for its export permit.
\nThis paper will need to be returned to the board of education when the sword is being shipped abroad, but you can receive a copy of it. An English translation of this registration paper is available on request.<\/span><\/p>\n
