\u3010Description\u3011<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0This blade is attributed to Enju. <\/span>Enjyu(\u5ef6\u5bff) is the prestigious school\u2019s name that flourished during the late Kamakura period-Nanbokucho period (Late 13th-Early 14th century) in Higo province (Today’s Kumamoto prefecture). Enjyu school was founded by Kunimura(\u56fd\u6751), who is said to have been the grandson of Rai Kuniyuki from Yamashiro province(Today\u2019s Kyoto prefecture).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Kunimura and his apprentices moved from Yamashiro province to Higo province(Today\u2019s Kumamoto prefecture in Kyushu island) after being invited by the Kikuchi clan, who had an influential power in that region. It is said that the 10th head of the Kikuchi clan, Kikuchi Takefusa(\u83ca\u6c60\u6b66\u623f), had to find skilled swordsmiths who could forge strong swords to combat the Mongolian army. Back then, Japan was targeted by the Mongolian emperor, and Kyushu island is where the battle was taking place twice(1274 and 1281). To prepare for the second attack from the Mongols, Kikuchi Takefusa brought Kunimura and his apprentices from Kyoto. Since then, Kunimura and his sons served as Okakaekaji for this clan, exclusively forging swords for the Kikuchi clan, which ruled the Higo province back then. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0All the swordsmiths from Enjyu school used the letter \u201c\u56fd\u201d (Kuni) for their maker\u2019s name. <\/span>The descendant of this school founded the famous sword school named Dotanuki(\u540c\u7530\u8cab). And there are descendants of the Enjyu school\u2019s swordsmiths throughout the Edo period. That means Enjyu school had over 500 years of its history.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0When Enju school flourished in the Nanbokucho period, Japan was tumultuous because the imperial court was split into two sides(south and north). There were many conflicts, and many Samurai were deployed. And Enju school must have dedicated themselves to forging high-quality blades for those Samurai who fought in battles.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The name \u201cEnjyu\u201d is written as \u5ef6\u5bff in Japanese. If you translate the word literally, it means extending life span, which was construed as good luck among feudal lords. Therefore, the swords were presented among Samurai as good gifts.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 It is appraised as a Tokubetsu Hozon Token<\/strong>(\u7279\u5225\u4fdd\u5b58\u5200\u5263) issued by NBTHK(Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai:\u65e5\u672c\u7f8e\u8853\u5200\u5263\u4fdd\u5b58\u5354\u4f1a). This authentication paper was only given to authentic Japanese swords, especially well preserved and high quality with artistic value.<\/span><\/p>\n

Nakago<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aNakago is the tang of the Japanese sword. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Japanese swordsmiths left the black rust on the tang because it prevents red rust while the tang is in its handle. And the discoloration of the tang was created over time, and it is a great indicator for a Japanese sword specialist to estimate when the sword was forged.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Koshirae:\u00a0Koshirae is the mounting of the Japanese sword. There are several parts that consist of Koshirae such as Saya(Scabbard), Tsuka(Handle), Tsuba(Handguard).<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Fuchi-Kashira<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aA pair of matching sword fittings that cover the upper and bottom parts of its sword hilt.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0Peonies are gorgeously designed on this Fuchi Kashira; each petal and leaf shape are realistically expressed. And golden paint is applied to some flowers, adding decorativeness to this work. Peony represents happiness, wealth, nobleness, and gorgeousness. This flower pattern has been treated as a kind of good-omen motif; people regarded it as a rich harvest sign. When this flower\u2019s name is written in Japanese Kanji characters, its second letter means mountain hermit medicine to give us eternal youth. Based on the meaning of this letter, the peony pattern symbolizes eternal youth and longevity.<\/span><\/p>\n

Tsuka and Menuki<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aTsuka is the handle of the Japanese sword and Menuki is its decoration.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0While we cannot see all the details of this Menuki, we think Samurai warriors are its motif. From the Tsukamaki thread’s gap, we could find figures of the warriors fighting with weapons. There are traces of colorings with golden and silvery paints. Since a Katana was a part of the battle attire, Samurai who went to battlefields might have encouraged themselves by adopting such designs into their Katan’s Koshirae.<\/span>
\n\"\"\u00a0 \u00a0 \"\"<\/p>\n

Tsuba and Habaki<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aTsuba is the handguard for the Japanese Sword and Habaki is the equipment to make the blade not touch its scabbard inside. It prevents the blade from getting rusty and chipped.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0This oval-shaped iron Tsuba has a symmetrical design, with six wild geese arranged in three balanced positions. A wild goose is a migratory bird that represents autumn. Because of its unique call, it is known as \u201ca bird that carries good luck and good news,\u201d meaning that it carries a message with its ancestors and brings good news. This bird was incorporated into designs for sword mountings and family crests. There are various types of family crests with this bird pattern. We would say this bird motif has been familiar to Japanese people since ancient times.<\/span><\/p>\n

Authentication Paper<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aNBTHK TOKUBETSU Hozon Certificate for the blade (No. 151709)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0NBTHK<\/a><\/span><\/span>, also known as Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai (the Society for the Preservation of the Japan Art Sword), is one of the oldest Japanese sword appraising organizations in modern-day Japan. They authenticated the blade on September 1st in the 18th year of Heisei (2006). They appraised it as Tokubetsu Hozon Touken, the blade especially worth preserving for Japanese society. The purchaser will receive this original certificate as well. Registration Number : <\/span>\u00a0Mie 7356<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The Board of Education in Mie prefecture issued a registration paper for this sword . It is called Jyu Token Rui Torokusho(\u9283\u5200\u5263\u985e\u767b\u9332\u8a3c). Bunkacho(The Agency for Cultural Affairs) acknowledges a Japanese sword with this paper as a work of art.
\nThe sword needs to be traditionally hand-forged and made of Tamahagane carbon steel to be registered in the system. With this paper, its owner in Japan can legally own an authentic Japanese sword. Based on this registration number, we will apply for its export permit.
\nThis paper will need to be returned to the board of education when the sword is being shipped abroad, but you can receive a copy of it. An English translation of this registration paper is available on request.<\/span><\/p>\n
