\u3010Description\u3011<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0This blade was signed by Nioh Kiyozane (\u4e8c\u738b\u6e05\u5b9f), who was active during the late Muromachi period (Eikyo era: 1429-1441). Kiyozane belonged to Nioh school, a prestigious school located in Suo domain (Today’s Yamaguchi prefecture).<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Nioh school flourished from the mid-Kamakura period to the late Muromachi period(500-750 years ago) and lasted until the Edo period(150\u2014400 years ago).<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The school was founded by Nioh Taro Kiyotsuna(\u4e8c\u738b\u592a\u90ce\u6e05\u7db1) in Suo Province(today\u2019s Yamaguchi prefecture). According to his remaining work, the oldest blade was forged in 1265. It is currently enshrined in Itsukushima Shrine in Hiroshima. It is said that he started to forge swords in around 1205 (early Kamakura period). The Nioh swordsmiths inherited the part of its founder\u2019s name \u6e05(Kiyo) such as \u6e05\u623f(Kiyofusa), \u6e05\u9577(Kiyonaga).<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0There were a lot of lands in Suo Province controlled by the Todaiji temple in the Kamakura-Muromachi period. It is said that Nioh school and Yamato swordsmiths from Nara prefecture had a strong relationship and technological exchange. That is why the blades forged by Nioh swordsmiths had a strong influence from YAMATO-DEN.<\/span>
\n*Todaiji temple is located in Nara prefecture. Before the Edo period, temples and shrines gained strong political influence.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The name Nioh came from the legend that the Tachi blade forged by Kiyotsuna(the founder of Nioh school) was able to save the Nioh statue by cutting the chain connected to it when Nioh temple was on fire. Another theory was that Nioh swordsmiths lived in a village called Nioh no Sho(\u4e8c\u4fdd\u5e84) and started to call themselves Nioh swordsmiths.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0When this blade was made, Japan was in the middle of Sengoku Jidai (Warring state period). And Nioh Kiyozane resided in the area ruled by Mori clan, one of the most powerful feudal clan. It is possible that this blade was originally owned by a Samurai who served Mori clan.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0It is appraised as a Hozon Touken <\/strong>(\u4fdd\u5b58\u5200\u5263) issued by NBTHK (Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai: \u65e5\u672c\u7f8e\u8853\u5200\u5263\u4fdd\u5b58\u5354\u4f1a). This authentication paper was only given to authentic Japanese swords, well preserved and high quality with artistic value.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe crystalline structure which forms along the cutting edge of a blade as a result of the hardening process.<\/strong><\/span>

\nVisible steel surface pattern created by folding and hammering during forging process.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Nakago<\/strong>: <\/span>Nakago is the tang of the Japanese sword. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Japanese swordsmiths left the black rust on the tang because it prevents red rust while the tang is in its handle. And the discoloration of the tang was created over time, and it is a great indicator for a Japanese sword specialist to estimate when the sword was forged.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Koshirae: Koshirae is the mounting of the Japanese sword. There are several parts that consist of Koshirae such as Saya (Scabbard), Tsuka (Handle), Tsuba (Handguard).<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Fuchi-Kashira<\/strong>:<\/span> A pair of matching sword fittings that cover the upper and bottom parts of its sword hilt.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0This Kashira part has a rough surface. There might be dents due to aging and past use. However, we estimate that it was probably finished initially with some unevenness on its surface. On the other hand, the Fuchi part has a flat surface, and there are traces of brass inlay while its coloring has almost faded due to aging.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"
\nTsuka and Menuki<\/strong>: <\/span>Tsuka is the handle of the Japanese sword and Menuki is its decoration.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0We could find the existence of the Menuki on each side of the handle through the gaps of the Tsukamaki thread. Now it is challenging to distinguish its motif because of aging. We assume that its long history and the friction caused by the user’s repeated use of the handle caused the surface to wear out, gradually resulting in the current condition. The original appearance of this Menuki is challenging to distinguish, but we would like you to enjoy this as an antique texture.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTsuba and Habaki<\/strong>: <\/span>Tsuba is the handguard for the Japanese Sword and Habaki is the equipment to make the blade not touch its scabbard inside. It prevents the blade from getting rusty and chipped.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0This oval-shaped antique Tsuba has a Kozuka hole. About the design, it seems that a single chrysanthemum flower and its leaves are carved from the side. A long time ago, chrysanthemums were used as a medicine for obtaining a long life in the continent, and this flower was brought to Japan with this thought in the Nara period (648-781). The chrysanthemum symbolizes fall, and people have greatly appreciated it since ancient times. The chrysanthemum has been likened to the sun as its petals form radially. That is why this flower pattern is treated as the symbol of perpetual youth and longevity or good health.<\/span><\/p>\n

Saya<\/strong>: <\/span>Saya is the scabbard for the Japanese sword.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>

Authentication Paper<\/strong>: <\/span>NBTHK Hozon Certificate for the blade (No. 365128)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0NBTHK<\/a><\/span><\/span>, also known as Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai (the Society for the Preservation of the Japan Art Sword), is one of the oldest Japanese sword appraising organizations in modern-day Japan. They authenticated the blade on August 5th in the 15th year of Heisei (2003). They appraised it as Hozon Touken, the blade worth preserving for Japanese society. The purchaser will receive this original certificate as well. We can also translate what is written into English and make a PDF file<\/span><\/a><\/span> for your record if you request.<\/span><\/p>\n

Registration Number: <\/span><\/span>Ibaraki 12505<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The Board of Education in Ibaraki prefecture issued a registration paper for this sword. It is called Jyu Token Rui Torokusho (\u9283\u5200\u5263\u985e\u767b\u9332\u8a3c). Bunkacho (The Agency for Cultural Affairs) acknowledges a Japanese sword with this paper as a work of art.
\n\u00a0The sword needs to be traditionally hand-forged and made of Tamahagane carbon steel to be registered in the system. With this paper, its owner in Japan can legally own an authentic Japanese sword. Based on this registration number, we will apply for its export permit.
\n\u00a0This paper will need to be returned to the board of education when the sword is being shipped abroad, but you can receive a copy of it. An English translation of this registration paper is available on request.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
