Antique Japanese Sword Tanto attributed to Sanjo Munechika with NTHK Kanteisho<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Certificate<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u3010Description\u3011<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0This blade is attributed to Sanjo Munechika in the Meiji period (1868-1912). Sanjo Munechika is a famous swordsmith name, whose history dates back to the Heian period, about 1000 years ago. We believe the attribution was given to the late-gen Munechika.<\/span><\/p>\n

Horimono (Engraving)\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0The Horimono (\u5f6b\u7269, blade sculpture) is one of the elements of this blade’s beauty. Two different Horimos are engraved on each side. The one is the Suken (\u7d20\u5263) pattern. It is a simplified design of the Sanko-Duka-Ken (\u4e09\u9237\u67c4\u5263), which is a sword that the Fudo Myo-O (\u4e0d\u52d5\u660e\u738bacalan\u0101tha, one of the objects of worship in Buddhism) brings. It is an esoteric Buddhist tool used for esoteric prayer, meditation, purification, and amulets. It is believed that this sword would exorcize evil spirits.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0On the other hand, two straight lines are engraved on this blade. It is a kind of Hi (\u6a0b), and this type of Hi is called the Futasuji Hi (\u4e8c\u7b4b\u6a0b). The Hi is a grooving, often in the form of a bar, carved along the blade. The exact role of Hi is unknown; however, there are three accepted theories. First, it is for the weight saving of the sword without reducing its strength. Second, it is for making a nice-looking blade. And the third theory is to produce the sound of cutting the wind when the sword is swung.<\/span><\/p>\n

Nakago<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aNakago is the tang of the Japanese sword. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Japanese swordsmiths left the black rust on the tang because it prevents red rust while the tang is in its handle. And the discoloration of the tang was created over time, and it is a great indicator for a Japanese sword specialist to estimate when the sword was forged.<\/span><\/p>\n

Koshirae:\u00a0Koshirae is the mounting of the Japanese sword. There are several parts that consist of Koshirae such as Saya(Scabbard), Tsuka(Handle), Tsuba(Handguard).<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Fuchi-Kashira<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aA pair of matching sword fittings that cover the upper and bottom parts of its sword hilt.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0The surface of this Fuchi Kashira is decorated with the Nanako-Ji (\u9b5a\u5b50\u5730) technique. This process makes a uniform minimal protrusions pattern by hitting the Nanako-Ji Tagane (\u9b5a\u5b50\u5730\u93e8, a chisel for this technique) on a metal surface.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Golden metal was applied to the edges and side holes of the Kashira part. This coloring makes the elegance of this work.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTsuka and Menuki<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aTsuka is the handle of the Japanese sword and Menuki is its decoration.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0This Menuki’s motif is a man who brings a fan, and they seem to dance. The surface has worn away due to aging and making it challenging to see the details of this Menuki. This Tanto handle is not wrapped with a Tsukamaki thread. Therefore, we imagine the unevenness of its surface was gradually worn out by being held many times. We hope you will enjoy it as the texture of an antique item.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHabaki<\/span>\uff1aHabaki is the equipment to make the blade not touch its scabbard inside. It prevents the blade from getting rusty and chipped. <\/span><\/strong>

Kozuka<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aKozuka is a small knife stored in Kozuka Hitsu(groove of the sheath of the Japanese sword).<\/b><\/p>\n

\u00a0A Kogatana (\u5c0f\u5200, small knife) is stored into the Kozuka. Same as the Fuchi Kashira, the Nanako-Ji technique was used on this Kozuka\u2019s surface. About the design, you would a man (probably a monk) is depicted. He holds a tool with several spheres attached to it. We assume it is a Kagura Suzu (\u795e\u697d\u9234). It is a bell used when dancing Kagura (\u795e\u697d, sacred Shito dance). Its handle is made by connecting several small bells. It is a tool used by Shinto priests and maidens during Shinto rituals to call the gods or pray to drive out evil spirits. Such a religious idea might have inspired this Kozuka’s design.<\/span><\/p>\n

Authentication Paper<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aNTHK Kanteisho Certificate for the blade<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0NTHK<\/span><\/a>, also known as NPO Nihon Touken Hozon Kai, is the oldest organization for sword authentication of Japanese swords in modern times. It was established in 1889 during the post-Samurai era. They authenticated the blade on Feb. 19th in the 5th year of Reiwa (2023). We are expecting to receive the paper by the end of March. The purchaser will receive this original certificate as well. We can also translate what is written into English and make a PDF file<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/span> for your record if you request.<\/p>\n

Registration Number : <\/span>Mie 25753<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The Board of Education in Mie prefecture issued a registration paper for this sword . It is called Jyu Token Rui Torokusho(\u9283\u5200\u5263\u985e\u767b\u9332\u8a3c). Bunkacho(The Agency for Cultural Affairs) acknowledges a Japanese sword with this paper as a work of art.
\nThe sword needs to be traditionally hand-forged and made of Tamahagane carbon steel to be registered in the system. With this paper, its owner in Japan can legally own an authentic Japanese sword. Based on this registration number, we will apply for its export permit.
\nThis paper will need to be returned to the board of education when the sword is being shipped abroad, but you can receive a copy of it. An English translation of this registration paper is available on request.<\/span><\/p>\n
