Antique Japanese Sword Wakizashi Signed by Fujiwara Yasuyuki with NBTHK<\/span> Hozon<\/span> Certificate\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n \u3010Description\u3011<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n Summary<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n \u00a0This blade was signed by Sagami no Kami Fujiwara Yasuyuki (\u76f8\u6a21\u5b88\u85e4\u539f\u6cf0\u5e78) according to NBTHK\u2019s Hozon appraisal. While \u201cFujiwara Yasuyuki\u201d was cut due to Suriage (shorting the blade), NBTHK concluded that it was made by Yasuyuki. He is a prominent swordsmith, also known as the son of Noto no Kami Fujiwara Yasuyuki (\u80fd\u767b\u5b88\u85e4\u539f\u6cf0\u5e78). He was active during the early Edo period (Mid-Late 17th century) .<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0Yasuyuki was originally from the Mino province (today\u2019s Gifu prefecture). However, he moved to Owari province (Today\u2019s Aichi prefecture) to look for better job opportunities. Owari province was active in martial arts during the early Edo period. And there was much demand for swords among high-class Samurai living there. Yasuyuki met those demands by forging excellent quality blades.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0As Owari province was active in martial arts during the early Edo period, there was much demand for swords among high-class Samurai. And there were quite a few renowned swordsmiths in Owari province, but many of them only forged blades for the Owari domain. Owari domain was known as Tokugawa Gosanke (\u5fb3\u5ddd\u5fa1\u4e09\u5bb6) and had powerful political power, closely connected to Tokugawa Shogunate in Edo city. We assume this blade was originally made for a high-class Samurai in Owari province.<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0Yasuyuki received the honorable official title of Sagami no Kami from the emperor for his superb sword-forging techniques after he moved to Owari province.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Mino Province<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n \u00a0Mino Province is one of the most famous and historical sword-forging sites. There were so many schools forging blades during the Samurai period. It especially prospered during Sengoku Jidai(Warring State period) due to the high demand for weapons. And the location of Mino province beat others. Akechi Mitsuhide controlled Mino province, Nobunaga Oda ruled Owari province, and Tokugawa Ieyasu was the lord of Suruga (Neighboring areas). There was high demand from those powerful feudal lords and their retainers.<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0Furthermore, many wars occurred between the Kanto region and the Kyoto area. Mino is located in the middle, making feudal lords feel convenient to order swords from MINO swordsmiths. Many feudal lords demanded swords forged in the Mino province. The blades forged in MINO provinces also had a reputation for their practical design and sharpness.<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0The tradition of excellent sword forging skills had been passed throughout the Edo period, and Yasuyuki is a good example. And, to look for better opportunities, many swordsmiths in Mino province moved to other parts of Japan, such as Owari province, located right next to Mino province. Those who moved to Owari from Mino are called Owari Seki. Yasuyuki is one of the most famous Owari Seki swordsmiths. Others are Masatsune (\u653f\u5e38)\u3001Ujifusa (\u6c0f\u623f), and Nobutaka (\u4fe1\u9ad8). We are confident you can appreciate the outstanding craft of Yasuyuki.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n \u00a0This blade is appraised as a Hozon Token(\u4fdd\u5b58\u5200\u5263) issued by NBTHK(Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai:\u65e5\u672c\u7f8e\u8853\u5200\u5263\u4fdd\u5b58\u5354\u4f1a). This authentication paper was only given to authentic Japanese swords, well preserved with artistic value.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n \u3010 Blade\u3011<\/span><\/strong> Hamon\uff1a<\/span> <\/p>\n Nakago<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aNakago is the tang of the Japanese sword. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n Japanese swordsmiths left the black rust on the tang on purpose to prevent red rust while the tang is in its handle. And the discoloration of the tang was created over time, which is a great indicator for a Japanese sword specialist to estimate when the sword was forged.<\/p>\n Koshirae: Koshirae is the mounting of the Japanese sword. There are several parts that consist of Koshirae such as Saya(Scabbard), Tsuka( Handle), Tsuba(Handguard).<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n Fuchi-Kashira<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aA pair of matching sword fittings that cover the upper and bottom parts of its sword hilt.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n \u00a0This Fuchi Kashira depicts a scenery of a battle. You would find the figure of fighting Samurai warriors. They are in ships, plowing through the rough waves and advancing valiantly against the enemy. There is a famous theme that has sometimes been seen in sword mountings as a design: the Genpei Kassen (\u6e90\u5e73\u5408\u6226). Although we are unsure if this Fuchi Kashira depicts exactly this battle, here we would like to introduce its synopsis as a possibility and share a famous piece of Samurai history with you.<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0The Genpei Kassen does not refer to one battle. This is a collective term for the civil wars heated in various parts of the country that continued over six years from 1180 until 1185. It is also called the Jishou Juei-no Ran (\u6cbb\u627f\u30fb\u5bff\u6c38\u306e\u4e71). This was the conflict between the Minamoto (\u6e90) clan (Genji family) and the Taira (\u5e73) clan (Heike family). By the call of Mochihito Ou (\u4ee5\u4ec1\u738b), many Samurai raised armies to overthrow the Taira family. It was the trigger of this protracted conflict. Mochihito Ou was unfortunately beaten by the Taira family and passed away in 1180. However, after that, Minamoto family side Samurai defeated the Taira side armies one after another. Finally, the Minamoto side won the battle and overthrew the Taira clan in 1185 at Dan-no Ura (\u58c7\u30ce\u6d66). It was the final battle of the Genpei Kassen, which led to the destruction of the Taira clan, who reached the height of glory.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span> \u00a0We believe this Menuki\u2019s design is related to the Fuchi Kashira. That is, the models designed for this Menuki are the characters of the Genpei Kassen. Same as the Fuchi Kashira, golden coloring was effectively applied to some parts and added decorativeness to this work.<\/span><\/p>\n Tsuba and Habaki<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aTsuba is the handguard for the Japanese Sword and Habaki is the equipment to make the blade not touch its scabbard inside. It prevents the blade from getting rusty and chipped.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n \u00a0This iron Tsuba has a Kozuka hole. Its outline is a shape that imitates an Ume (\u6885, Japanese apricot blossom) tree. Japanese apricot blossoms begin to bloom in winter when snow still covers its tree. People thought this flower told the arrival of spring. Same as cherry blossoms, it has been appreciated for a long time in Japan. People enjoy its adorable petal shape, scent, and gracefully branched trees and compose many poems. As it comes out in the cold season, it symbolizes the power of perseverance and vitality. Seeing Japanese apricot blossoms desperately blooming in the bitter cold, Samurai warriors might have thought of the harsh conditions they were facing in a life-or-death battle.<\/span><\/p>\n Kozuka<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aKozuka is a small knife stored in Kozuka Hitsu(groove of the sheath of the Japanese sword).<\/b><\/p>\n \u00a0A Kogatana (\u5c0f\u5200, small knife) is stored in the Kozuka. The surface of this Kozuka is decorated with the Nanako-Ji (\u9b5a\u5b50\u5730) technique. The engraved motifs are the Kura (\u978d, saddle) and probably a Shikomi Gatana (\u4ed5\u8fbc\u307f\u5200), which is a kind of hidden weapon. \nThe sword needs to be traditionally hand-forged and made of Tamahagane carbon steel to be registered in the system. With this paper, its owner in Japan can legally own an authentic Japanese sword. Based on this registration number, we will apply for its export permit.
