\u3010Description\u3011<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0This blade was signed by Minamoto Moritsugu (\u6e90\u76db\u6b21). He belonged to Kongo Hyoue (\u91d1\u525b\u5175\u885b) and was active during the late Muromachi period (Early-Mid 16th century) in Chikuzen province(Today\u2019s Fukuoka prefecture).<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Kongo Hyoue (\u91d1\u525b\u5175\u885b) was a prestigious school founded by Kongo Hyoue Morikuni during the late Kamakura period. There were quite a few renowned swordsmiths who were from this school. They resided in Urayama, where Kamado shrine, also known as Kongo Houman, was located. All the swordsmiths who belonged to Kongo Hyoue school used Mori (\u76db) as their maker\u2019s name, such as Moritsugu. The Nakago (tang) they created has a distinctive shape called Sotoba (\u5352\u5854\u5a46).<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Kongo Hyoue has a strong relationship with Buddhism, as well. Moritaka exclusively forged swords for Reizan Houman Zan, a politically and militarily strong Buddist organization at one point.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\" \"\"<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 It is appraised as a Tokubetsu Hozon Token<\/strong>(\u7279\u5225\u4fdd\u5b58\u5200\u5263) issued by NBTHK(Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai:\u65e5\u672c\u7f8e\u8853\u5200\u5263\u4fdd\u5b58\u5354\u4f1a). This authentication paper was only given to authentic Japanese swords, especially well preserved and high quality with artistic value.<\/span><\/p>\n

Nakago<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aNakago is the tang of the Japanese sword. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Japanese swordsmiths left the black rust on the tang because it prevents red rust while the tang is in its handle. And the discoloration of the tang was created over time, and it is a great indicator for a Japanese sword specialist to estimate when the sword was forged.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Koshirae:\u00a0Koshirae is the mounting of the Japanese sword. There are several parts that consist of Koshirae such as Saya(Scabbard), Tsuka(Handle), Tsuba(Handguard).<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Fuchi-Kashira<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aA pair of matching sword fittings that cover the upper and bottom parts of its sword hilt.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0All sword mountings of this Koshirae have the same motif: dragon. On this Fuchi Kashira, you would find dragons swimming in the water. Although some colorings have faded due to aging, we could see that gold paint was initially applied to dragon parts. The combination of dragons and water (wave pattern) is often seen. We estimate it is because of a Japanese belief that worships the dragon as a water god. Since rice cultivation has flourished in Japan, people always treat water as an essential resource. We imagine many people believed this faith that worships the existence of a water god for a plentiful harvest.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"
\nTsuka and Menuki<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aTsuka is the handle of the Japanese sword and Menuki is its decoration.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Each Menuki is the figure of a dragon. Its entire surface is colored with golden paint and remains in relatively good condition. Thanks to this bright coloring, each Menuki has a shiny and ornamental look.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Initially, the dragon is an imaginary creature found in ancient Chinese traditions or myths. Furthermore, it is regarded as a symbolic beast of auspicious signs. Its body is likened to nine animals: antlers are deer, the head is a camel, eyes are demons, the neck is a snake, the belly is Mizuchi (\u86df, a mythical animal in Japan that looks like a snake and has a horn and four legs), scales are fish, claws are falcons, palms are tigers, and ears are cows. It was thought that the dragon would reign at the top of all animals because of its odd-looking appearance.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTsuba and Habaki<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aTsuba is the handguard for the Japanese Sword and Habaki is the equipment to make the blade not touch its scabbard inside. It prevents the blade from getting rusty and chipped.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0As mentioned above, this iron Tsuba’s design is also related to the dragon. Two dragons pushing through the clouds are arranged diagonally. If you focus on the left side of the Nakago hole (center hole), you will find an engraved inscription. It is written as Tomotsune Saku (\u53cb\u6052 \u4f5c), meaning that a metalworker named Tomotsune made this Tsuba.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Similar to the combination of dragons and wave patterns, the cloud pattern has also been combined with the dragon motif. Clouds bring blessed rain and snow, and their movements significantly affect a day’s weather. Due to its supernatural power, a theory says that gods, spirits, and dragons dwell in the clouds. The cloud pattern has been associated with magical power, and people thought it an omen of good-luck things.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Looking at it this way, by using a common motif for sword mountings, there is a sense of unity throughout this Koshirae. We imagine many Samurai favored this dignified beast design. And hopefully, you will enjoy this Koshirae with the blade.<\/span><\/p>\n

Authentication Paper<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aNBTHK TOKUBETSU Hozon Certificate for the blade (No. 1012520)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0NBTHK<\/a><\/span><\/span>, also known as Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai (the Society for the Preservation of the Japan Art Sword), is one of the oldest Japanese sword appraising organizations in modern-day Japan. They authenticated the blade on December 2nd in the first year of Reiwa (2019). They appraised it as Tokubetsu Hozon Touken, the blade especially worth preserving for Japanese society. The purchaser will receive this original certificate as well. We can also translate what is written into English and make a PDF file<\/span><\/a><\/span> for your record if you request.<\/span><\/p>\n

Registration Number : Nagasaki 4483<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The Board of Education in Nagasaki prefecture issued a registration paper for this sword . It is called Jyu Token Rui Torokusho(\u9283\u5200\u5263\u985e\u767b\u9332\u8a3c). Bunkacho(The Agency for Cultural Affairs) acknowledges a Japanese sword with this paper as a work of art.
\nThe sword needs to be traditionally hand-forged and made of Tamahagane carbon steel to be registered in the system. With this paper, its owner in Japan can legally own an authentic Japanese sword. Based on this registration number, we will apply for its export permit.
\nThis paper will need to be returned to the board of education when the sword is being shipped abroad, but you can receive a copy of it. An English translation of this registration paper is available on request.<\/span><\/p>\n
