\u3010Description\u3011<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0This blade was signed by Hitachi no Kami Muneshige (\u5e38\u9678\u5b88\u5b97\u91cd) in the early Edo Period(Approx. 350 years old). Muneshige was originally from the Harima area(Hyogo prefecture today). He then moved to Osaka to forge swords during the Kanbun era. (the early Edo period). His master was the first generation Tsuda Sukehiro(\u6d25\u7530\u52a9\u5e83), one of the greatest swordsmiths in the early Edo period in Osaka.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\" \"\"<\/p>\n

\u00a0The reputation of Sukehiro was closed to Kotetsu, another renowned swordsmith in the Edo period. It is said that Muneshige\u2019s sword-forging technique was so great that he forged some swords on behalf of his master Sukehiro.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Muneshige received the title of Hitachi no Kami. The imperial court only gave the title of kami(\u5b88) to the swordsmiths who did excellent work. It was honorable for any swordsmiths to receive such a title and only extremely skilled swordsmiths deserved this title.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The blades forged by Muneshige are categorized as Osaka Shinto. Shinto is Japanese Sword generic term that refers to the swords forged during 1596-1781. The blades made in Osaka area during this period are called Osaka Shinto. There are many famous swordsmiths in this Osaka Shinto era. After Hideyoshi Toyotomi built Osaka castle, Osaka city flourished as a castle town and became the business center. Many swordsmiths moved to Osaka to look for better opportunities. They not only forged swords for those Samurai who lived in Osaka but also for feudal lords nationwide. Ikanshi Tadatsuna(Awataguchi Omi no Kami Tadatsuna), Inoue Shinkai, and Tsuda Sukehiro are the most famous ones among those many swordsmiths.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0This blade is appraised as a Tokubetsu Hozon Token<\/strong>(\u7279\u5225\u4fdd\u5b58\u5200\u5263) issued by NBTHK(Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai:\u65e5\u672c\u7f8e\u8853\u5200\u5263\u4fdd\u5b58\u5354\u4f1a). This authentication paper was only given to authentic Japanese swords, especially well preserved and high quality with artistic value.<\/span><\/p>\n

Nakago<\/strong>\uff1aNakago is the tang of the Japanese sword.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Japanese swordsmiths left the black rust on the tang because it prevents red rust while the tang is in its handle. And the discoloration of the tang was created over time, and it is a great indicator for a Japanese sword specialist to estimate when the sword was forged.<\/p>\n

Koshirae:\u00a0Koshirae is the mounting of the Japanese sword. There are several parts that consist of Koshirae such as Saya(Scabbard), Tsuka(Handle), Tsuba(Handguard).<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Fuchi-Kashira<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aA pair of matching sword fittings that cover the upper and bottom parts of its sword hilt.\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The Kashira part has a simple look with copper\u2019s black color. Although there are minor dents and scratches, these are the traces of its long history. We hope you will enjoy them as antique textures. On the other hand, the Fuchi part has a more decorative appearance. A combination of two metal colors accents the pattern.<\/span>
\n\"\"
\nTsuka and Menuki<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aTsuka is the handle of the Japanese sword and Menuki is its decoration.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0It is challenging to judge the design of this Menuki by seeing from the gaps of the Tsukamaki thread. We estimate a kind of plant is the motif because we could find shapes of probably leaves and flowers. It seems golden paint was initially applied to some parts. Some colorings have already faded due to aging; it shows how long and how often this handle was gripped.<\/span>
\n\"\" \"\"<\/p>\n

Tsuba and Habaki<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aTsuba is the handguard for the Japanese Sword and Habaki is the equipment to make the blade not touch its scabbard inside. It prevents the blade from getting rusty and chipped.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0The large Ise-Ebi (\u4f0a\u52e2\u6d77\u8001, spiny lobster) is designed for this Tsuba. While winding its large body and long antennae on a circular screen, it is finished in a dignified and powerful design. \u00a0According to a theory, Japanese people already ate shrimp in the Heian period (794-1185). However, it was expensive for ordinary citizens, so only the nobility and high-class people could enjoy it. People started using shrimp as a good-omen pattern and appreciated designing it for their family crests in the Muromachi period (1336-1573).<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0In the Samurai\u2019s society, as shrimp is covered with a hard shell, it was thought that a shrimp represents the figure of a brave Samurai who wears the armor. It has the meaning that wishes the fate of a Samurai will last for a long time. Shrimp has been likened to an older adult because of its long feelers. Also, shrimps actively jump even though they are bowed. That is the reason why the shrimp pattern is treated as a symbol of perpetual youth and longevity. This animal shed its molt several times to grow up; therefore, some people have considered it is a symbol of success in life. Additionally, the red color of Ise-Ebi\u2019s body was treated as a color that would exorcise evil spirits. Based on these multiple good meanings, it is understandable that the shrimp motif was incorporated into sword mountings.<\/span>

Saya<\/strong><\/span>\uff1a Saya is the scabbard for the Japanese sword.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0NBTHK<\/span><\/a>, also known as Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai (the Society for the Preservation of the Japan Art Sword), is one of the oldest Japanese sword appraising organizations in modern-day Japan. They authenticated the blade on June 3rd in the 4th\u00a0 year of Reiwa (2022). They appraised it as Tokubetsu Hozon Touken, the blade especially worth preserving for Japanese society.The purchaser will receive these original certificate as well. \u00a0The Board of Education in Chiba prefecture issued a registration paper for this sword . It is called Jyu Token Rui Torokusho(\u9283\u5200\u5263\u985e\u767b\u9332\u8a3c). Bunkacho(The Agency for Cultural Affairs) acknowledges a Japanese sword with this paper as a work of art.
\nThe sword needs to be traditionally hand-forged and made of Tamahagane carbon steel to be registered in the system. With this paper, its owner in Japan can legally own an authentic Japanese sword. Based on this registration number, we will apply for its export permit.
\nThis paper will need to be returned to the board of education when the sword is being shipped abroad, but you can receive a copy of it. An English translation of this registration paper is available on request.<\/span><\/p>\n
