\u3010Description\u3011<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0This blade was signed by Kiyomitsu (\u6e05\u5149) during Shin Shin To era (1764-1876), according to NBTHK, which appraised it as a Tokubetsu Hozon Touken. There were quite a few swordsmiths who used Kiyomitsu as their maker’s names in that time period. Therefore, NBTHK didn’t specify which Kiyomitsu forged this blade.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Japan enjoyed a relatively peaceful time from the early Edo period to the mid-Edo period(the 1600s-1760s) because of the stable economy and the powerful government run by Tokugawa Shogunate. Many Samurai didn’t have many opportunities to utilize his Katana sword in public or on battlefields during this time. Thus, they carried their swords more as a symbol of their social status. The demand for swords decreased accordingly compared to the previous Warring state period called Sengoku Jidai. (1467-1600)<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0However, toward the end of the Edo period(1764-1876), the Japanese sword’s role changed dramatically. With the poverty spreading in Japan, there were so many riots initiated by the civilians. Japanese sword started to play an essential role in maintaining public safety.<\/span>
\nPressure from foreign countries to open Japanese borders also forced Samurai to order strong-looking swords to survive this tumultuous time. We believe many swordsmiths including Kiyomitsu, made great efforts to forged high-quality, practical swords for their masters to prepare for battles.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0There was a civil war between Tokugawa’s military government and the new Meiji government at the end of the Edo period. That means the original owner of this Katana might have seen the moment when Samurai’s life changed forever. This blade has a strong looking and must have been practical to use in that demanding time.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0It is stored in a Handachi Koshirae (Half- Tachi style sword mounting) and its Saya (scabbard) and Fuchi Kashira (pommel) are especially decorative ones.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0It is appraised as a Tokubetsu Hozon Token<\/strong>(\u7279\u5225\u4fdd\u5b58\u5200\u5263) issued by NBTHK(Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai:\u65e5\u672c\u7f8e\u8853\u5200\u5263\u4fdd\u5b58\u5354\u4f1a). This authentication paper was only given to authentic Japanese swords, especially well preserved and high quality with artistic value.<\/span><\/p>\n

Nakago<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aNakago is the tang of the Japanese sword. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Japanese swordsmiths left the black rust on the tang because it prevents red rust while the tang is in its handle. And the discoloration of the tang was created over time, and it is a great indicator for a Japanese sword specialist to estimate when the sword was forged.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Koshirae:\u00a0Koshirae is the mounting of the Japanese sword. There are several parts that consist of Koshirae such as Saya(Scabbard), Tsuka(Handle), Tsuba(Handguard).<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Fuchi-Kashira<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aA pair of matching sword fittings that cover the upper and bottom parts of its sword hilt.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0The theme of this Fuchi Kashira’s design is a combination of dragons and clouds. The pattern of clouds is mainly visible, and parts of the dragon’s body can be seen and hidden here and there through the gaps. Clouds bring blessed rain and snow, and their movements significantly affect the day’s weather. Due to its supernatural power, a theory says that gods, spirits, and dragons dwell in the clouds. In Japan, a religion worships the dragon as a water god. Since rice cultivation has flourished in this country, water has been one of the essential resources. It is imaginable that Samurai warriors favored this design, which combines the supernatural power of clouds and the power of a dragon as a water god.<\/span>

\nTsuka and Menuki<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aTsuka is the handle of the Japanese sword and Menuki is its decoration.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Same as the Fuchi Kashira, this Menuki\u2019s motif is also the dragon. You could find their characteristic figures from the gaps of the Tsukamaki thread. Although some colorings have already faded due to aging, we could see golden paint is applied to several parts.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Initially, the dragon is an imaginary creature found in ancient foreign traditions or myths. Furthermore, it is regarded as a symbol of auspicious signs. Its body is likened to nine animals: antlers are deer, the head is a camel, eyes are demons, the neck is a snake, the belly is the Mizuchi (\u86df, a mythical animal in Japan that looks like a snake and has a horn and four legs), scales are fish, claws are falcons, palms are tigers, and ears are cows. It was thought that the dragon would reign at the top of all animals because of its odd-looking appearance. This dignified beast design is often seen in sword mountings.<\/span>

\nTsuba and Habaki<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aTsuba is the handguard for the Japanese Sword and Habaki is the equipment to make the blade not touch its scabbard inside. It prevents the blade from getting rusty and chipped.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0This Tsuba has a symmetrical design and an octagonal shape. According to a theory, pentagons, hexagons, heptagons, and octagons are considered especially auspicious shapes among polygons. The pentagon means omnipotence and success. It is a figure with five elements (fire, water, wood, metal, and earth) that form all things. The hexagon has been familiar to Japanese people as an element of the Kikkou (\u4e80\u7532, turtle\u2019s shell) pattern that represents longevity. The number seven itself is considered an auspicious number that brings good luck, so the heptagon is also regarded as a promising figure. And now, about the octagon, it is also called the Hakke (\u516b\u5366). Some people believe it has the power to expel bad spirits, exorcize evil spirits, and bring good luck from all directions. In Japanese, an octagon is written as follows: \u516b\u89d2\u5f62. The character \u201c\u516b\u201d its shape is called the Suehirogari (\u672b\u5e83\u304c\u308a). The upper part of this letter points to the current direction, and the lower part points to the future direction. This shape means eternal prosperity, development, and prosperity. This idea might have inspired this Tsuba\u2019s design.<\/span>

Authentication Paper<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aNBTHK TOKUBETSU Hozon Certificate for the blade (No. 1014706)\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0NBTHK<\/a><\/span><\/span>, also known as Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai (the Society for the Preservation of the Japan Art Sword), is one of the oldest Japanese sword appraising organizations in modern-day Japan. They authenticated the blade and its Koshirae on Feb. 25th in the 3rd year of Reiwa (2021). They appraised it as Tokubetsu Hozon Touken, the blade especially worth preserving for Japanese society. The purchaser will receive this original certificate as well. Registration Number : <\/span>Gifu 19680<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The Board of Education in Gifu prefecture issued a registration paper for this sword . It is called Jyu Token Rui Torokusho(\u9283\u5200\u5263\u985e\u767b\u9332\u8a3c). Bunkacho(The Agency for Cultural Affairs) acknowledges a Japanese sword with this paper as a work of art.
\nThe sword needs to be traditionally hand-forged and made of Tamahagane carbon steel to be registered in the system. With this paper, its owner in Japan can legally own an authentic Japanese sword. Based on this registration number, we will apply for its export permit.
\nThis paper will need to be returned to the board of education when the sword is being shipped abroad, but you can receive a copy of it. An English translation of this registration paper is available on request.<\/span><\/p>\n
