Antique Japanese Sword Katana Signed by Minamoto Masao with <\/span>Hozon<\/span> <\/span>Certificate<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u3010Description\u3011<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0This blade was signed by Minamoto Masao (\u6e90\u6b63\u96c4) in the third year of the Bunkyu era (1863: The end of the Edo period). Masao’s birth name was Suzuki Jiro (\u9234\u6728\u6b21\u90ce). He was born in Mino province (Today’s Gifu prefecture). He was famous for being the best apprentice of Minamoto Kiyomaro (\u6e90\u6e05\u9ebf), one of the most renowned swordsmiths at the end of the Edo period. Masao was trusted by Kiyomaro so much that he sometimes did a Daisaku for Kiyomaro.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Daisaku is a regular act where an apprentice or a child of the swordsmith signs his master’s name with his master’s permission or forges a blade on behalf of the master. That means that his master highly acknowledged Kunitomo’s craftsmanship. That is also why there aren’t many remaining blades signed by Masao, who dedicated his career to helping his master.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\" \"\"<\/p>\n

\u00a0It is said that Masao became an independent swordsmith in the 6th year of the Ka-Ei era (1853). And he resided in Okachimachi city in Edo (Today’s Tokyo).<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0In the 5th year of the Ansei era (1857), Masao was invited by Matsumae domain, a direct retainer of Tokugawa Shogunate located on today’s Hokkaido island. He forged blades in Hakodate city using carbon steel produced there for about three years. Overall, his active period as an independent swordsmith was 12 years.<\/span><\/p>\n

Considering that this blade was forged in 1863, we believe it was made in Edo city at the end of his career when he mastered excellent craftsmanship.<\/p>\n

\u00a0This blade is appraised as a Hozon Token(\u4fdd\u5b58\u5200\u5263) issued by NBTHK(Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai:\u65e5\u672c\u7f8e\u8853\u5200\u5263\u4fdd\u5b58\u5354\u4f1a). This authentication paper was only given to authentic Japanese swords, well preserved with artistic value.<\/span><\/p>\n

Nakago<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aNakago is the tang of the Japanese sword. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 Japanese swordsmiths left the black rust on the tang because it prevents red rust while the tang is in its handle. And the discoloration of the tang was created over time, and it is a great indicator for a Japanese sword specialist to estimate when the sword was forged.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Koshirae:\u00a0Koshirae is the mounting of the Japanese sword. There are several parts that consist of Koshirae such as Saya(Scabbard), Tsuka(Handle), Tsuba(Handguard).<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Fuchi-Kashira<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aA pair of matching sword fittings that cover the upper and bottom parts of its sword hilt.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0The dragon is the common motif for sword mountings of this Koshirae. On this Fuchi Kashira, engraving lines are worn out due to aging and it is challenging to see its design. We think a dragon is depicted on the Kashira part, and waves or clouds are designed on the Fuchi part.<\/span>
\n\"\" \"\"<\/p>\n

Tsuka and Menuki<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aTsuka is the handle of the Japanese sword and Menuki is its decoration.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0It seems golden paint was initially applied to these dragons. We estimate this coloring faded due to aging, and also, the former owners of this blade gripped this Tsuka many times. We hope you would feel and enjoy the long history of this work.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0If you focus on the upper Menuki, you will find that this dragon brings a ball-shaped object in its left hand. It is the Nyoi Houju (\u5982\u610f\u5b9d\u73e0, Cint\u0101ma\u1e47i); a fantasy jewel that fulfills any desire and gives out treasure, clothes, food, and drinks. Moreover, it heals illness and suffering, removes evils, purifies muddy water, and prevents disasters. It is said this magical item is taken from the brain of the dragon king.<\/span>

Tsuba and Habaki<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aTsuba is the handguard for the Japanese Sword and Habaki is the equipment to make the blade not touch its scabbard inside. It prevents the blade from getting rusty and chipped.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0The figure of a giant dragon peeking through clouds is engraved. The dragon’s eyes, beard, and flames are colored with golden paint. It is a powerful image that conveys the majestic atmosphere of this dragon.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Initially, the dragon was an imaginary creature found in ancient foreign traditions or myths. Furthermore, it is regarded as a symbolic beast of auspicious signs. Its body is likened to nine animals: antlers are deer, the head is a camel, eyes are demons, the neck is a snake, the belly is the Mizuchi (\u86df, a mythical animal in Japan that looks like a snake and has a horn and four legs), scales are fish, claws are falcons, palms are tigers, and ears are cows. It was thought that the dragon would reign at the top of all animals because of its odd-looking appearance.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The dragon design is often seen in sword mountings. And the combination of dragons and clouds or waves is also frequently found. In Japan, there is a belief that worships the dragon as a water god. Clouds bring blessed rain, and waves are water itself. Since rice cultivation has flourished in this country, water has been treated as one of the essential resources. We assume this belief is possibly related to the theme of the combination of dragons and clouds or waves.<\/span>

\nSaya<\/strong><\/span>\uff1a Saya is the scabbard for the Japanese sword.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Authentication Paper<\/strong><\/span>\uff1aNBTHK Hozon Certificate for the blade (No.385672)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0NBTHK<\/span><\/a>, also known as Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai (the Society for the Preservation of the Japan Art Sword), is one of the oldest Japanese sword appraising organizations in modern-day Japan. They authenticated the blade on May 7th in the 22nd year of Heisei (2010). They appraised it as Hozon Touken, the blade worth preserving for Japanese society. The purchaser will receive this original certificate as well. We can also translate what is written into English and make a PDF file<\/span><\/a> for your record if you request.<\/span><\/p>\n

Registration Number : <\/span>Shizuoka 22026<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span>
\n\u00a0 The Board of Education in Shizuoka prefecture issued a registration paper for this sword . It is called Jyu Token Rui Torokusho(\u9283\u5200\u5263\u985e\u767b\u9332\u8a3c). Bunkacho(The Agency for Cultural Affairs) acknowledges a Japanese sword with this paper as a work of art.
\nThe sword needs to be traditionally hand-forged and made of Tamahagane carbon steel to be registered in the system. With this paper, its owner in Japan can legally own an authentic Japanese sword. Based on this registration number, we will apply for its export permit.
\nThis paper will need to be returned to the board of education when the sword is being shipped abroad, but you can receive a copy of it. An English translation of this registration paper is available on request.<\/span><\/p>\n
